New applications, such as virtual reality and smart building control, have emerged due to the large number of resources and services brought by cloud computing. However, the delay-sensitive applications face the problem of large latency, especially when several smart devices and objects are getting involved in human’s life such as the case of smart cities or Internet of Things. Therefore, cloud computing is unable to meet the requirements of low latency, location awareness, and mobility support. To solve this problem, researchers have introduced a trusted and dependable solution through the Fog and the Mobile Edge Computing (FMEC) to put the services and resources of the cloud closer to users, which facilitates the leveraging of available services and resources in the edge networks. By this, we are moving from the core (cloud data centers) to the edge of the network closer to the users. FMEC dependability is based on providing user centric service. The purpose of Fog and the Mobile Edge Computing is to run the heavy real-time applications at the network edge directly using the billions of connected mobile devices. Several features enable the Fog and the Mobile Edge Computing to be a perfect paradigm to the aforementioned purpose, which are the dense geographical deployment of servers, supporting mobility and the closeness to users. As in every new technology, some challenges face the vision of the Fog and the Mobile Edge Computing, which are the administrative policies and security concerns (i.e. secure data storage, secure computation, network security, data privacy, usage privacy, location privacy, etc). FMEC 2017 conference aims to investigate the opportunities and requirements for Mobile Edge Computing dominance. In addition, it seeks for novel contributions that help mitigating Mobile Edge Computing challenges. That is, the objective of FMEC 2017 is to provide a forum for scientists, engineers, and researchers to discuss and exchange new ideas, novel results and experience on all aspects of Fog and Mobile Edge Computing (FMEC). Please kindly disseminate this CFPto your colleagues and contacts*** The first International Workshop on Parallel Data Mining (WPDM 2017) CALL FOR PAPERS As part of The International Conference on High Performance Computing & Simulation (HPCS 2017) http://hpcs2017.cisedu.info or http://cisedu.us/rp/hpcs17 July 17 – July 21, 2017 Genoa, Italy Submission Deadline: March 20, 2017 Submissions could be for full papers, short papers, poster papers, or posters SCOPE AND OBJECTIVES The Workshop on Parallel Data Mining is an international forum which brings together researchers and practitioners working on different high-performance aspects of data mining algorithms, enabling novel applications. Data mining techniques and algorithms to process huge amount of data in order to extract useful and interesting information have become popular in many different contexts. Algorithms are required to make sense of data automatically and in efficient ways. Nonetheless, even though sequential computer systems performance is improving, they are not suitable to keep up with the increase in the demand for data mining applications and the data size. Moreover, the main memory of sequential systems may not be enough to hold all the data related to current applications. Therefore, there is an increasing interest in the design and implementation of parallel data mining algorithms. On parallel computers, by exploiting the vast aggregate main memory and processing power of processors and accelerators, parallel algorithms can easily address both the running time and memory requirement issues. Anyway, parallelising existing algorithms in order to achieve good performance and scalability with regard to massive datasets is not trivial. Indeed, it is of paramount importance a good data organisation and decomposition strategy in order to balance the workload while minimising data dependences. Another concern is related to minimising synchronisation and communication overhead. Finally, I/O costs should be minimised as well. The Workshop will allow exchanging ideas and results related to on-going research, focusing on high-performance aspects of data mining algorithms and applications. Creating breakthrough parallel algorithms for high-performance data mining applications requires addressing several key computing problems which may lead to novel solutions and new insights in interdisciplinary applications. The focus of the workshop is on all forms of advances in high-performance data mining algorithms and applications, and related topics. The WPDM Workshop topics include (but are not limited to) the following: - Scalable message-passing parallel data mining algorithms using MPI - Scalable shared-memory parallel data mining algorithms using OpenMP - Scalable hybrid MPI + OpenMP parallel data mining algorithms - Parallel data mining algorithms targeting GPUs and many-cores accelerators - Exploiting modern parallel architectures including FPGA for parallel data mining applications - Map-reduce based parallel data mining algorithms - Middleware for high-performance data mining on grid and cloud environments - Benchmarking and performance studies of high-performance data mining applications - Novel programming paradigms to support high-performance computing for data mining - Performance models for high-performance data mining applications and middleware - Programming models, tools, and environments for high-performance computing in data mining - Caching, streaming, pipelining, and other optimisation techniques for data management in high-performance computing for data mining INSTRUCTIONS FOR PAPER SUBMISSIONS You are invited to submit original and unpublished research works on above and other topics related to synergy between parallel computing, optimisation and simulation. The rise of *Next Generation Sequencing* (NGS) technologies, also known as *high-throughput sequencing* technologies, has contributed actively to the deluge of these data. In general, these data are big, heterogeneous, complex, and distributed in all over the world in databases. Analyzing this huge volume of data is a challenging task, not only, because of its complexity and its multiple and numerous correlated factors, but also, because of the continuous evolution of our understanding of the biological mechanisms. Classical approaches of biological data analysis are no longer efficient and produce only a very limited amount of information, compared to the numerous and complex biological mechanisms under study. From here comes the necessity to use computer tools and develop new *in silico* high performance approaches to support us in the analysis of biological data and, hence, to help us in our understanding of the correlations that exist between, on one hand, structures and functional patterns in biological macromolecules and, on the other hand, genetic and biochemical mechanisms. *Biological **Knowledge Discovery from Data* (BIOKDD) is a response to these new trends. ARES will highlight the various aspects of security - with special focus on the crucial linkage between availability, reliability and security. ARES aims at a full and detailed discussion of the research issues of security as an integrative concept that covers amongst others availability, safety, confidentiality, integrity, maintainability and security in the different fields of applications. ARES will emphasize the interplay between foundations and practical issues of security in emerging areas such as e-government, m-government, location-based applications, ubiquitous computing, autonomous computing, chances of grid computing etc. ARES is devoted to the critical examination and research challenges of the various aspects of Secure and Dependable Computing and the definition of a future road map. Selected papers that are accepted by and presented at the ARES Conference will be published, after further revision, in special issues of international journals. The acceptance rate of the ARES 2016 conference was 24,42% (full papers only). Authors of selected papers that are accepted by and presented at the ARES Conference (including workshops) will be invited to submit an extended version to special issues of international journals. Authors are invited to submit research and application papers according the following guidelines: two columns, single-spaced, including figures and references, using 10 pt fonts and number each page. For the main conference as well as the workshops submission papers are classified into 3 categorizes representing original, previously unpublished work: -full paper (10 pages) -short paper (6 pages) -workshop paper (8 pages, a maximum of 10 pages is tolerated) Submitted papers will be carefully evaluated based on originality, significance, technical soundness, presentation and clarity of exposition. Simultaneous submission of the same work to multiple venues, submission of previously published work, or plagiarism constitutes dishonesty or fraud. ARES, like other scientific and technical conferences and journals, prohibits these practices and may take action against authors who have committed them. SMAP 2017 has the support of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society technical co-sponsorship. *Special session on Personalized delivery of cultural heritage content ----------------------------------- Digital cultural heritage is now a mature field, in which information technologies are used in the service of preserving cultural heritage. The digital form of resources allows for the exploitation of advances in data analytics, semantics, information retrieval, user interaction, profiling and personalization in order to develop new, exciting and stimulating exhibitions and cultural/educational/touristic experiences. For this special session we invite works that present and/or review the current state of the art in theory and practice, as well as promising recent advances, in the area of aligning the delivery process for cultural heritage content to the needs, goals, characteristics and preferences of individual users and user groups. The session is broad in scope, with the caveat that emphasis should be on the link between cultural heritage and personalization techniques. *Special Session on Multimodal affective analysis for human-machine interfaces and learning environments ----------------------------------- Affective analysis is a broad research area that focuses on the recognition, interpretation, processing and simulation of human affect, i.e., feelings or emotions. During the last years many efforts in the fields of content understanding and human-machine interaction have turned towards a more human-centered approach and complement traditional semantic-based ones by enhancing them with the users’ affective state while interacting with machines (typically computers, avatars and robots). This special session calls for research papers focusing on signal analysis and machine learning techniques that extract affective knowledge from auditory, visual and textual information usually employed in human-machine interaction and learning applications. Papers that focus on new signal representation, feature extraction and emotion modelling approaches are welcomed, as well as papers covering practical work, tools and applications. *Proceedings/Publications ----------------------------------- As with all previous editions of SMAP, all accepted papers are planned to be published by IEEE in IEEEXplore. Based on the quality of the work presented and its estimated potential selected papers will be invited for consideration, in a revised and extended form, for inclusion in an additional journal publication. *Submission guidelines ---------------------------------- Each submitted paper will be refereed by at least three members of the SMAP 2017 Program Committee, based on its relevance, originality, significance, technical soundness and clarity of expression. Submissions must be in English, and can present mature research or experimental results as well as promising work in progress. This is a branch of artificial intelligence covering a spectrum of current exciting machine learning research and industrial innovation that provides more efficient algorithms to deal with large-scale data in neuroscience, computer vision, speech recognition, language processing, drug discovery, biomedical informatics, recommender systems, learning theory, robotics, games, etc. Renowned academics and industry pioneers will lecture and share their views with the audience. Most deep learning subareas will be displayed, and main challenges identified through 4 keynote lectures, 31 six-hour courses, and 1 round table, which will tackle the most active and promising topics. An open session will give participants the opportunity to present their own work in progress in 5 minutes.
