AIMS AND GOAL ----------------- Privacy in statistical databases is about finding tradeoffs to the tension between the increasing societal and economical demand for accurate information and the legal and ethical obligation to protect the privacy of individuals and enterprise which are the respondents providing the statistical data. In the case of statistical databases, the motivation for respondent privacy is one of survival: data collectors cannot expect to collect accurate information from individual or corporate respondents unless these feel the privacy of their responses is guaranteed. Beyond respondent privacy, there are two additional privacy dimensions to be considered: privacy for the data owners (organizations owning or gathering the data, who would not like to share the data they have collected at great expense) and privacy for the users (those who submit queries to the database and would like their analyses to stay private). "Privacy in Statistical Databases 2022" (PSD 2022) is a conference with proceedings published by Springer-Verlag in Lecture Notes in Computer Science. The purpose of PSD 2022 is to attract world-wide, high-level research in statistical database privacy. Using the above format with 11 point font, the paper should be at most 12 pages excluding bibliography and appendices, and at most 16 pages total. Committee members are not required to read appendices; the paper should be intelligible without them. Submissions not meeting these guidelines risk rejection without consideration of their merits. 5. PROCEEDINGS -------------- Among PSD 2022 accepted papers, a selection will be made based on quality and coverage and the selected papers will be published in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) series by Springer. This follows the tradition of the previous PSD conferences. The remaining accepted papers will be published in a USB with an ISBN. It is possible to submit a paper directly for the USB, which benefits from a later submission deadline and no copyright transfer (see USB-only dates below). The sheer quantum of data being created and collected across jurisdictions requires a carefully planned and proactive approach to data management. The need for fusion and integration of multiple data sources characterized by fragmented data ownership is driving innovative approaches to large scale distributed data management and integration to avoid inconsistent and inaccurate data. The aim is to investigate, design and implement a fully decentralized solution to provide efficient management of dynamically updated information and support for distributed queries. One or more domain specific use cases shall be identified within the context of the project, considering both the current and future needs of some of the involved partners. These nicely fit into the research plan, owing to the need of surveying the user’s requirements to begin with; simultaneously, the uses cases can also be thought of as sources of advanced data management challenges. HiPC 2022 29th IEEE International Conference on High Performance Computing, Data & Analytics Dec. 18-21, 2022 Bengaluru, India Website: http://www.hipc.org CALL FOR PAPERS HiPC 2022 will be the 29th edition of the IEEE International Conference on High Performance Computing, Data, Analytics, and Data Science. HiPC serves as a forum to present current work by researchers from around the world as well as highlight activities in Asia in the areas of high performance computing and data science. The meeting focuses on all aspects of high performance computing systems, and data science and analytics, and their scientific, engineering, and commercial applications. Authors are invited to submit original unpublished research manuscripts that demonstrate current research in all areas of high performance computing, and data science and analytics, covering all traditional areas and emerging topics including from machine learning, big data analytics. Each submission should be submitted to one of the six tracks listed under the two broad themes of High Performance Computing and Data Science. Up to two best paper awards will be given for outstanding contributed papers. Depending on how the COVID-19 pandemic situation evolves, the presentation may be in person or in a virtual format. Authors of selected high-quality papers in HiPC 2022 will be invited to submit extended versions of their papers for possible publication in a special issue of the Journal of Parallel and Distributed Computing (JPDC). Cloud providers need to manage complex and heterogeneous infrastructures in a seamless fashion to support the highly dynamic and diverse workloads and applications customers deploy. Similarly, HPC environments have been increasingly adopting techniques that enable flexible management of vast computing and networking resources, close to marginal provisioning cost, which is unprecedented in the history of scientific and commercial computing. More recently, Function as a Service (Faas) and Serverless computing, leveraging on lightweight virtualizaton and containerization solutions, widens the spectrum of applications that can be deployed in a cloud environment, especially in an HPC context. Here, HPC-provided services can become accessible to distributed workloads outside of large cluster environments. Various virtualization-containerization technologies contribute to the overall picture in different ways: machine virtualization, with its capability to enable consolidation of multiple underutilized servers with heterogeneous software and operating systems (OSes), and its capability to live-migrate a fully operating virtual machine (VM) with a very short downtime, enables novel and dynamic ways to manage physical servers; OS-level virtualization (i.e., containerization), with its capability to isolate multiple user-space environments and to allow for their coexistence within the same OS kernel, promises to provide many of the advantages of machine virtualization with bare-metal responsiveness and performance; lastly, unikernels provide for many virtualization benefits with a minimized OS/library surface. I/O Virtualization in turn allows physical network interfaces to take traffic from multiple VMs or containers; network virtualization, with its capability to create logical network overlays that are independent of the underlying physical topology is furthermore enabling virtualization of HPC infrastructures. *Topics of Interest* The VHPC program committee solicits original, high-quality submissions related to virtualization across the entire software stack with a special focus on the intersection of HPC, containers-virtualization and cloud computing. SCIENTIFIC SUPERVISOR Prof. Massimo Cafaro RESEARCH TITLE LARGE SCALE DATA MANAGEMENT AND INTEGRATION DESCRIPTION This is a three year “Marie Curie ETN Early Stage Researcher position” on the following topic. The sheer quantum of data being created and collected across jurisdictions requires a carefully planned and proactive approach to data management. The need for fusion and integration of multiple data sources characterized by fragmented data ownership is driving innovative approaches to large scale distributed data management and integration to avoid inconsistent and inaccurate data. The aim is to investigate, design and implement a fully decentralized solution to provide efficient management of dynamically updated information and support for distributed queries. One or more domain specific use cases shall be identified within the context of the project, considering both the current and future needs of some of the involved partners. These nicely fit into the research plan, owing to the need of surveying the user’s requirements to begin with; simultaneously, the uses cases can also be thought of as sources of advanced data management challenges. Researchers at the University of New Brunswick are recruiting programmers with experience in parallel programming in C using OpenMP 4.0 directives to complete an online study. The goal of the research is to study the mental representations formed by parallel programmers. Understanding these representations is important for developing programming languages and tools that enhance and assist programmers in the comprehension process and other tasks. Each paper must deal with original and unpublished work, not submitted for publication elsewhere (copyright problems fall entirely under responsibility of the authors). Each paper will be reviewed by at least three experts in the relevant field (acceptance rate was 28% in 2005, 26% in 2006 and 28% in 2007, 29% in 2008, 30% in 2009, 29% in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 30% in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021) ensuring the publication of only top quality contributions. The 17th edition of VHPC will be held on June 2nd, jointly with the ISC High-Performance 2022 <https://www.isc-hpc.com/> conference and exhibition in Hamburg (Germany), and will feature two excellent industrial _/keynote speakers/_ * “rtla: finding the sources of OS noise on Linux”, Daniel Bristot De Oliveira, Senior Principal Software Engineer in the real-time kernel team at Red Hat * “DynamoDB: NoSQL database services for predictable HPC workloads”, Akshat Vig, Principal Software Engineer at Amazon Web Services (AWS). Cloud providers need to manage complex and heterogeneous infrastructures in a seamless fashion to support the highly dynamic and diverse workloads and applications customers deploy. Similarly, HPC environments have been increasingly adopting techniques that enable flexible management of vast computing and networking resources, close to marginal provisioning cost, which is unprecedented in the history of scientific and commercial computing. More recently, Function as a Service (Faas) and Serverless computing, leveraging on lightweight virtualizaton and containerization solutions, widens the spectrum of applications that can be deployed in a cloud environment, especially in an HPC context. Here, HPC-provided services can become accessible to distributed workloads outside of large cluster environments. Various virtualization-containerization technologies contribute to the overall picture in different ways: machine virtualization, with its capability to enable consolidation of multiple underutilized servers with heterogeneous software and operating systems (OSes), and its capability to live-migrate a fully operating virtual machine (VM) with a very short downtime, enables novel and dynamic ways to manage physical servers; OS-level virtualization (i.e., containerization), with its capability to isolate multiple user-space environments and to allow for their coexistence within the same OS kernel, promises to provide many of the advantages of machine virtualization with bare-metal responsiveness and performance; lastly, unikernels provide for many virtualization benefits with a minimized OS/library surface. I/O Virtualization in turn allows physical network interfaces to take traffic from multiple VMs or containers; network virtualization, with its capability to create logical network overlays that are independent of the underlying physical topology is furthermore enabling virtualization of HPC infrastructures. *Topics of Interest* The VHPC program committee solicits original, high-quality submissions related to virtualization across the entire software stack with a special focus on the intersection of HPC, containers-virtualization and cloud computing. While machine reasoning will enable intelligent systems to better understand and interact with their physical world, machine intelligence through modeling, simulation and automation, closes the gap between experiments, extreme computing, and scientific discovery. In order to usher in this new era of autonomous science, advances in several areas of artificial intelligence and other disciplines e.g., high-performance computing, data engineering need to come together. Therefore, the goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers from diverse backgrounds to enable extreme scaling of AI for science. This workshop will address the overarching goal of enabling semi-autonomous and autonomous AI-driven predictive and prescriptive scientific discovery at scale by integrating extreme-scale heterogeneous and reconfigurable computing paradigms, multiscale mathematics, physics-based simulation, data sciences and engineering to address challenges across science, scientific instruments, and security domains e.g., biology, chemistry, and material science. (apologies for cross-postings) The 23nd IEEE International Workshop on Parallel and Distributed Scientific and Engineering Computing (PDSEC-22) (http://www.ieee-tcsc.org/2022/pdsec/) will be held on May 30, 2022 in Lyon, France in conjunction with IPDPS 2022. Deadline: PDSEC-22 deadline: 21 Jan 2022 (AoE) Scope and Interests: The technological trends in HPC system evolution indicates an increasing burden placed on application developers due to themanagement of the unprecedented complexity levels of hardware and its associated performance characteristics. Many existing scientific applications codes are unlikely to perform well on future systems without major modifications or even complete rewrites. In the future, it will be necessary to utilize, in concert, many characteristics such as multiple levels of parallelism, many lightweight cores, complex memory hierarchies, novel I/O technology, power capping, system-wide temporal/spatial performance heterogeneity and reliability concerns. The parallel and distributed computing (PDC) community has developed new programming models, algorithms, libraries and tools to meet these challenges to accommodate productive code development and effective system use. However, the scientific application community still needs to identify the benefit through practical evaluations. Thus, the focus of this workshop is on methodologies and experiences used in scientific and engineering applications and algorithms to achieve sustainable code development for better productivity, application performance and reliability. This time, however, it will take place online on the 6th of February. This edition of the Ada DevRoom is organized in cooperation with Ada-Belgium [1] and Ada-Europe [2]. General Information about FOSDEM -------------------------------- FOSDEM [3], the Free and Open source Software Developers' European Meeting, is a free and non-commercial two-day weekend event organized early each year in Brussels, Belgium. This year, for obvious reasons, it has been turned into an online event, just like last year. It is highly developer-oriented and brings together 8000+ participants from all over the world. No registration is necessary. The goal is to provide open source developers and communities a place to meet with other developers and projects, to be informed about the latest developments in the open source world, to attend interesting talks and presentations on various topics by open source project leaders and committers, and to promote the development and the benefits of open source solutions. Ada Programming Language and Technology --------------------------------------- Awareness of safety and security issues in software systems is ever increasing. Multi-core platforms are now abundant. These are some of the reasons that the Ada programming language and technology attracts more and more attention, among others due to Ada's support for programming by contract and for multi-core targets. The latest Ada language definition was updated early 2016. Work on new features is ongoing, such as improved support for fine-grained parallelism, and will result in a new Ada standard scheduled for 2022. Ada-related technology such as SPARK provides a solution for the safety and security aspects stated above. More and more tools are available, many are open source, including for small and recent platforms. Interest in Ada keeps further increasing, also in the open source community, from which many exciting projects have been started. Ada Developer Room ------------------ FOSDEM is an ideal fit for an Ada Developer Room. On the one hand, it gives the general open source community an opportunity to see what is happening in the Ada community and how Ada can help to produce reliable and efficient open source software. On the other hand, it gives open source Ada projects an opportunity to present themselves, get feedback and ideas, and attract participants to their project and collaboration between projects. At previous FOSDEM events, the Ada-Belgium non-profit organization organized successful Ada Developer Rooms, offering a full day program in 2006 [4], a two-day program in 2009 [5], and full day programs in 2012-2016 [6-10], and in 2018-2020 [11-13]. An important goal is to present exciting Ada technology and projects, including people outside the traditional Ada community. This edition is no different, and since it will take place online, we hope to attract people from all over the world. Call for Presentations ---------------------- We would like to schedule technical presentations, tutorials, demos, live performances, project status reports, discussions, etc, in the Ada Developer Room. Do you have a talk you want to give? Do you have a project you would like to present? Would you like to get more people involved with your project? The Ada organizers call on you to: - discuss and help organize the details, subscribe to the Ada-FOSDEM mailing list [14]; - for bonus points, be a speaker: the Ada-FOSDEM mailing list is the place to be! - don't hesitate to propose a topic that you would like to present to the community, we are eager to know what you have in store for us! We're inviting proposals that are related to Ada software development, and include a technical oriented discussion. You're not limited to slide presentations, of course. Be creative. Propose something fun to share with people so they might feel some of your enthusiasm for Ada! Speaking slots should be 15 or 30 minutes, plus 5 or 10 minutes resp. for Q&A, if the same schedule as last year is followed. However, this schedule is flexible and can be modified for longer talks. For example, a long technical talk can be transformed into a 45 minutes talk, plus time for Q&A. Depending on interest, we might also have a session with lightning presentations (e.g. 5 minutes each), and/or an informal discussion session. Note that all talks will be streamed live (audio+video) and should be prerecorded. After the streaming of the talk, a live Q&A session will take place. By submitting a proposal, you agree to being recorded and streamed. While machine reasoning will enable intelligent systems to better understand and interact with their physical world, machine intelligence through modeling, simulation and automation, closes the gap between experiments, extreme computing, and scientic discovery. In order to usher in this new era of autonomous science, advances in several areas of artificial intelligence and other disciplines e.g., high-performance computing, data engineering need to come together. Therefore, the goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers from diverse backgrounds to enable extreme scaling of AI for science. This workshop will address the overarching goal of enabling semi-autonomous and autonomous AI-driven predictive and prescriptive scientic discovery at scale by integrating extreme-scale heterogeneous and reconfigurable computing paradigms, multiscale mathematics, physics-based simulation, data sciences and engineering to address challenges across science, scientic instruments, and security domains e.g., biology, chemistry, and material science. Specic areas of interest include: * Algorithms: Advance extreme-scale Artificial Intelligence through algorithmic development in the areas of probabilistic reasoning, multimodal representation learning, natural language processing, robotics, decision making, combinatorial optimization and human-machine interaction. * Implementation and deployment: Enable scalable Artificial Intelligence through advances in distributed and parallel AI algorithms and tools, heterogeneous and reconfigurable computing platforms and paradigms, Exascale systems, and compilers and system software for extreme-scale AI/ML algorithms. * Applications: Discuss application use cases in science domains of importance including computational biology, molecular chemistry, material science, epidemiology, energy and physics. Three Deep learning and Computer Vision Postdoc Positions Jointly Supervised in Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece and Henan University, China Position Description Three postdoctoral positions are immediately available at the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Team/Lab, Henan University; the postdoc fellows will be co-supervised by Prof. Ioannis Pitas from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. The postdoc fellows can stay 4-5 months with Prof. Ioannis Pitas at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece; but they should stay in China for at least 7-8 months per year. Position Location The postdocs will be paid by Henan University, China. They will stay in Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (4-5 months), Thessaloniki, Greece, and Henan University (7-8 months), Kaifeng, China Subject Areas Deep learning and Computer Vision, including but not limited to Object Detection/Recognition, Region Segmentation and related topics. Salary 1800~2200 EUR net per month. Application Deadline December 31st, 2022 Duration of the contract The duration of the contract is 24~36 months, and can be extended up to 48 months. Salary a) The monthly net income of the Postdoctoral researcher is around 1800~2200 EUR (after taxes being deducted), paid by Henan University. b) Additionally, the University will provide a total amount of 100,000 RMB as the candidate's research funding, which can be used for research purposes such as conferences, traveling, meetings, etc. Note: This research funding is once for all, not per year. Note: The Living expenses in Kaifeng is relatively low. For instance, Accommodation cost (two bedrooms, one living room) in Kaifeng is about 150~200 EUR per month. Following a couple of successful events, it comes to the 20th in 2022 in the series. In both New Zealand and Australia parallel and distributed computing has been recognised as strategic technologies for driving their moves towards knowledge economies. This is especially true for the current tier of leading petascale machines and the road to exascale computing as HPC systems continue to scale up in compute node and processor core count. These extreme-scale systems require novel scientific algorithms to hide network and memory latency, have very high computation/communication overlap, have minimal communication, and have no synchronization points. With the advent of Big Data and AI in the past few years the need of such scalable mathematical methods and algorithms able to handle data and compute intensive applications at scale becomes even more important. Scientific algorithms for multi-petaflop and exa-flop systems also need to be fault tolerant and fault resilient, since the probability of faults increases with scale. Resilience at the system software and at the algorithmic level is needed as a crosscutting effort. Finally, with the advent of heterogeneous compute nodes that employ standard processors as well as GPGPUs, scientific algorithms need to match these architectures to extract the most performance. This includes different system-specific levels of parallelism as well as co-scheduling of computation. Key science applications require novel mathematical models and system software that address the scalability and resilience challenges of current- and future-generation extreme-scale HPC systems. Each nomination involves several components: -- Name, address, phone number, and email address of the candidate's thesis advisor -- Name, address, and email address of the candidate. Affiliation should be the name of the school. -- Suggested citation. The citation should be a concise statement (maximum of 25 words) describing the critical technical or professional accomplishment for which the candidate merits this award. Note that the final wording for awardees will be at the discretion of the Award Committee. -- Nomination statement (200-300 words in length) addressing why the candidate should receive this award. This should address the significance of the dissertation, not simply repeat the information in the abstract. -- A copy of the dissertation. Each submitted dissertation for consideration must include an English abstract of maximally 3000 words. -- Endorsement letters. At least two supporting letters should be included from experts in the field who can provide additional insights or evidence of the dissertation’s impact. (The nominator/advisor may not write a letter of support.) Each letter should include the name, address, and telephone number of the endorser. The nominator should collect the letters and bundle them for submission. The endorsement letter and supporting letters can be combined in one file in your pdf upload. Resilient Bioinspired Algorithms Special Session of the EvoApps 2022 conference Part of EvoStar 2022 -- http://www.evostar.org/2022/ 20-22 April 2022 Aims and Scope -------------- The Special Session on Resilient Bio-Inspired Algorithms (RBA) of EvoApps will provide a specialized forum of discussion and exchange of information for researchers interested in exploring bio-inspired approaches (swarm intelligence, evolutionary computing) to attain resilient systems and processes. Resiliency is a major topic after major disruptions like COVID-19 where many organizations/systems were too brittle to quickly adapt and they simply broke. Designers of bio-inspired techniques should focus on such systems and help in their design and/or operation, in order to make them more adaptable and capable of withstanding such disruptions. This is for example the case of many organization/industrial processes that work as goal-oriented complex systems, often using AI tools. The four critical challenges for exascale systems are extreme parallelism, power demand, data movement, and reliability. These systems are aimed to solve problems that were previously out of reach and improve the parallel performance of applications by a factor of 50x. The power budget for achieving a billion billion (quintillion) floating-point operations per second (exaflops) should be within 20-30 MW. Moving the data on these systems relative to the computation will be challenging due to complex memory hierarchies. It would be essential to keep the CPUs/accelerators busy once they have the data to avoid memory bottlenecks. Failures on these systems are anticipated to occur many times a day, such that the existing approach for resiliency, such as checkpointing and restart, will not work. TOPICS The goal of this workshop is to attract leading researchers to exchange ideas and share their work-in-progress and latest results to address the exascale software challenges.
