A research grant is available at the University of Salento, Lecce, Italy. The research shall be developed in close collaboration with Echolight (https://www.echolightmedical.com, 12 months out of 18 in total), and is related to the following topic: The main goal of the project is to improve the tuning and calibration process of noninvasive diagnostic imaging devices used for imaging. One of the most critical steps during the implementation of a diagnostic imaging device is its calibration. In fact, poor calibration can lead to unreliable instrument performance with noisy images and the presence of unwanted artefacts that could mislead the diagnosis made by the physician. The calibration phase involves a repeated try-and-check procedure during which the instrument parameters are repeatedly changed in order to obtain images that are sharp and as closely matched as possible to the target reference. This phase often requires considerable time expenditure and expert supervision; moreover, if one considers that calibration is carried out both following the production of the diagnostic instrument but also after several months of its use in the operational context, it is easy to deduce that automating this process on the one hand would improve the diagnostic yield, and on the other hand would reduce downtime and recalibration. The project aims to improve and automate the calibration process by introducing machine learning techniques for image classification. The results of the project find application on all instruments used for imaging, whether they are based on MRI, computed tomography, X-ray or ultrasound techniques. In fact, the goal is to relate the configuration parameters of the instrument to the images it produces in order to eliminate noise and artefacts produced by misconfiguration. Despite this, in the project we will consider as a case study the images produced by an ultrasound-based device produced by Echolight S.p.A. Medical devices produced by Echolight S.p.A. exploit images derived from ultrasound scans (B-Mode) to automatically identify anatomical reference targets (lumbar vertebrae bone interfaces of the L1-L4 tract and proximal femur bone interface). Once the regions of interest (ROIs) are identified, a proprietary algorithm evaluates the spectral characteristics of selected portions of the raw ultrasound signal related to the analyzed bone tissues. From the analysis of the raw signal characteristics, a measure of the bone mineral density (BMD) of the analyzed anatomical sites is determined. In order to provide reliable, repeatable, and accurate BMD measurements, special calibration and testing procedures have been developed, however, which require several manual measurements and checks, resulting in a high human-time commitment and, consequently, introducing a risk of human error on the collection and interpretation of the collected measurements and results. Leveraging the image processing and image classification techniques developed within the project, the algorithm will provide output indicative of the presence of artefacts or other alterations in the performance of the ultrasound system in production in order to possibly intervene with further modifications and calibrations. As part of the project, standard conditions for conducting tests will also be defined through the use of specific ultrasound phantoms provided by the company. The first research grant shall be developed in close collaboration with Planetek Italia (12 months out of 18 in total), and is related to the following topic: Machine Learning for Space Weather The proposed research project is concerned with the study of "Space Weather Phenomena" and the development of knowledge about the mechanisms and effects of solar-derived perturbative phenomena developing in circumterrestrial space and impacting the ionized atmosphere (ionosphere). In the project emphasis is given to the study and modeling of the dynamics of the ionospheric plasma and the electron density irregularities in it on a global scale, in order to improve the capability of long-term (24-48 hours in advance) nowcasting and forecasting of the ionospheric response to Space Weather events over the Mediterranean area. The modeling approach is developed through innovative "machine learning" techniques, recently introduced (Cesaroni et al 2020), the results of which point to this as a strategy to extend the time horizon of ionospheric forecasting, a fundamental requirement for increasing knowledge of Space Weather phenomena in near-Earth space. In addition, the growing demand for semi-empirical approaches for real-time mitigation of errors introduced by the ionosphere on positioning and navigation systems makes the proposed topic a significant contribution in the area of "services and research for society" in relation to the strategic objective "Development of a National Space Weather Service" in the context of developing countermeasures to contain the negative effect that the irregular and disturbed ionosphere can have on technological systems in use in modern society such as, for example, navigation and positioning satellite systems (GNSS, GLobal Navigation Satellite Systems), trans-horizon HF radio communications, and L-band satellite communication systems. Such systems are of interest to a variety of end users who can be identified as users of the service in which the developed products may be embedded. The second research grant shall be developed in close collaboration with GE Avio (12 months out of 18 in total), and is related too the following topic: Operative Framework For HPC (Off-HPC) High-performance computing (HPC) clouds are becoming a complement or, in some cases, an alternative to on-premise clusters for running scientific-technical, engineering, and business analytics service applications. Most research efforts in the area of cloud HPC aim to analyze and understand the cost-benefit of migrating computationally intensive applications from on-premise environments to public cloud platforms. Industry trends show that on-premise/cloud hybrid environments are the natural path to get the best out of on-premise and cloud resources. Workloads that are stable from the point of view of required computing resources and sensitive from the point of view of the need to protect processed information can be performed on on-premise resources, while peak computational loads can take advantage of remote computing resources available in the cloud typically under a "pay-as-you-go" consumption mode. The main difficulties in using cloud solutions to run HPC applications stem from their characteristics and properties compared to traditional cloud services to handle, for example, standard enterprise applications, Web applications, data storage or backup, or business intelligence. HPC applications tend to require more computing power than application services typically delivered in cloud environments. These processing requirements arise not only from the characteristics of the CPUs (Central Processing Units), but also from the amount of memory and network speed to support their proper execution. In addition, such applications may have a particular and different execution mechanism than dedicated cloud application services that instead run 24/7. HPC applications tend to run in batch mode. Users execute a series of computational jobs, consisting of instances of the application with different inputs, and wait until results are generated to decide whether new computational tasks need to be submitted and executed. Therefore, moving HPC applications to cloud platforms requires not only a focus on resource allocation in the infrastructure in use and its optimization, but also on how users interact with this new environment. Research in the area of cloud HPC can be classified into three broad categories: (i) feasibility studies on adopting the cloud to replace or complement on-premise computing clusters to run HPC applications; (ii) performance optimization of cloud resources for running HPC applications; and (iii) services to simplify the use of cloud HPC, particularly for users who are not specialized in data and information processing and processing technologies. This research project intends to focus on study activities within the first category, in which, more specifically, there are four main aspects that should be considered: (i) metrics used to assess how feasible the use of HPC cloud is; (ii) resources used in computational experiments; (iii) computational infrastructure; and (iv) software, which includes both well-known HPC benchmarks and computational tools, algorithms, or methodologies related to specific business application cases. Currently, the company uses HPC applications running mostly on on-premise systems but faces issues related to the need for greater computational resources that can be met through flexible and scalable architectures provided by cloud technologies. The need is to build clear technology and governance references for cloud or hybrid infrastructures. The research project will therefore aim to carefully analyze the state of the art of hybrid HPC solutions, define criteria for benchmarking different solutions, develop an operational framework that includes the operational and economic management aspects of a hybrid HPC solution, and finally implement one or more industrial pilots. HiPC 2022 29th IEEE International Conference on High Performance Computing, Data & Analytics Dec. 18-21, 2022 Bengaluru, India Website: http://www.hipc.org CALL FOR PAPERS HiPC 2022 will be the 29th edition of the IEEE International Conference on High Performance Computing, Data, Analytics, and Data Science. HiPC serves as a forum to present current work by researchers from around the world as well as highlight activities in Asia in the areas of high performance computing and data science. The meeting focuses on all aspects of high performance computing systems, and data science and analytics, and their scientific, engineering, and commercial applications. Authors are invited to submit original unpublished research manuscripts that demonstrate current research in all areas of high performance computing, and data science and analytics, covering all traditional areas and emerging topics including from machine learning, big data analytics. Each submission should be submitted to one of the six tracks listed under the two broad themes of High Performance Computing and Data Science. Up to two best paper awards will be given for outstanding contributed papers. Depending on how the COVID-19 pandemic situation evolves, the presentation may be in person or in a virtual format. Authors of selected high-quality papers in HiPC 2022 will be invited to submit extended versions of their papers for possible publication in a special issue of the Journal of Parallel and Distributed Computing (JPDC). HIGH PERFORMANCE COMPUTING Topics for papers include, but are not limited to the topics given under the categories below. Algorithms: This track invites papers that describe original research on developing new parallel and distributed computing algorithms, and related advances. Cloud providers need to manage complex and heterogeneous infrastructures in a seamless fashion to support the highly dynamic and diverse workloads and applications customers deploy. Similarly, HPC environments have been increasingly adopting techniques that enable flexible management of vast computing and networking resources, close to marginal provisioning cost, which is unprecedented in the history of scientific and commercial computing. More recently, Function as a Service (Faas) and Serverless computing, leveraging on lightweight virtualizaton and containerization solutions, widens the spectrum of applications that can be deployed in a cloud environment, especially in an HPC context. Here, HPC-provided services can become accessible to distributed workloads outside of large cluster environments. Various virtualization-containerization technologies contribute to the overall picture in different ways: machine virtualization, with its capability to enable consolidation of multiple underutilized servers with heterogeneous software and operating systems (OSes), and its capability to live-migrate a fully operating virtual machine (VM) with a very short downtime, enables novel and dynamic ways to manage physical servers; OS-level virtualization (i.e., containerization), with its capability to isolate multiple user-space environments and to allow for their coexistence within the same OS kernel, promises to provide many of the advantages of machine virtualization with bare-metal responsiveness and performance; lastly, unikernels provide for many virtualization benefits with a minimized OS/library surface. I/O Virtualization in turn allows physical network interfaces to take traffic from multiple VMs or containers; network virtualization, with its capability to create logical network overlays that are independent of the underlying physical topology is furthermore enabling virtualization of HPC infrastructures. *Topics of Interest* The VHPC program committee solicits original, high-quality submissions related to virtualization across the entire software stack with a special focus on the intersection of HPC, containers-virtualization and cloud computing. SCIENTIFIC SUPERVISOR Prof. Massimo Cafaro RESEARCH TITLE LARGE SCALE DATA MANAGEMENT AND INTEGRATION DESCRIPTION This is a three year “Marie Curie ETN Early Stage Researcher position” on the following topic. The sheer quantum of data being created and collected across jurisdictions requires a carefully planned and proactive approach to data management. The need for fusion and integration of multiple data sources characterized by fragmented data ownership is driving innovative approaches to large scale distributed data management and integration to avoid inconsistent and inaccurate data. The aim is to investigate, design and implement a fully decentralized solution to provide efficient management of dynamically updated information and support for distributed queries. One or more domain specific use cases shall be identified within the context of the project, considering both the current and future needs of some of the involved partners. These nicely fit into the research plan, owing to the need of surveying the user’s requirements to begin with; simultaneously, the uses cases can also be thought of as sources of advanced data management challenges. Researchers at the University of New Brunswick are recruiting programmers with experience in parallel programming in C using OpenMP 4.0 directives to complete an online study. The goal of the research is to study the mental representations formed by parallel programmers. Understanding these representations is important for developing programming languages and tools that enhance and assist programmers in the comprehension process and other tasks. Therefore, the goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers from diverse backgrounds to enable extreme scaling of AI for science. Similarly, HPC environments have been increasingly adopting techniques that enable flexible management of vast computing and networking resources, close to marginal provisioning cost, which is unprecedented in the history of scientific and commercial computing. More recently, Function as a Service (Faas) and Serverless computing, leveraging on lightweight virtualizaton and containerization solutions, widens the spectrum of applications that can be deployed in a cloud environment, especially in an HPC context. Here, HPC-provided services can become accessible to distributed workloads outside of large cluster environments. Various virtualization-containerization technologies contribute to the overall picture in different ways: machine virtualization, with its capability to enable consolidation of multiple underutilized servers with heterogeneous software and operating systems (OSes), and its capability to live-migrate a fully operating virtual machine (VM) with a very short downtime, enables novel and dynamic ways to manage physical servers; OS-level virtualization (i.e., containerization), with its capability to isolate multiple user-space environments and to allow for their coexistence within the same OS kernel, promises to provide many of the advantages of machine virtualization with bare-metal responsiveness and performance; lastly, unikernels provide for many virtualization benefits with a minimized OS/library surface. I/O Virtualization in turn allows physical network interfaces to take traffic from multiple VMs or containers; network virtualization, with its capability to create logical network overlays that are independent of the underlying physical topology is furthermore enabling virtualization of HPC infrastructures. *Topics of Interest* The VHPC program committee solicits original, high-quality submissions related to virtualization across the entire software stack with a special focus on the intersection of HPC, containers-virtualization and cloud computing. While machine reasoning will enable intelligent systems to better understand and interact with their physical world, machine intelligence through modeling, simulation and automation, closes the gap between experiments, extreme computing, and scientific discovery. In order to usher in this new era of autonomous science, advances in several areas of artificial intelligence and other disciplines e.g., high-performance computing, data engineering need to come together. Therefore, the goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers from diverse backgrounds to enable extreme scaling of AI for science. This workshop will address the overarching goal of enabling semi-autonomous and autonomous AI-driven predictive and prescriptive scientific discovery at scale by integrating extreme-scale heterogeneous and reconfigurable computing paradigms, multiscale mathematics, physics-based simulation, data sciences and engineering to address challenges across science, scientific instruments, and security domains e.g., biology, chemistry, and material science. Specific areas of interest include: * Algorithms: Advance extreme-scale Artificial Intelligence through algorithmic development in the areas of probabilistic reasoning, multimodal representation learning, natural language processing, robotics, decision making, combinatorial optimization and human-machine interaction. * Implementation and deployment: Enable scalable Artificial Intelligence through advances in distributed and parallel AI algorithms and tools, heterogeneous and reconfigurable computing platforms and paradigms, Exascale systems, and compilers and system software for extreme-scale AI/ML algorithms. * Applications: Discuss application use cases in science domains of importance including computational biology, molecular chemistry, material science, epidemiology, energy and physics. (apologies for cross-postings) The 23nd IEEE International Workshop on Parallel and Distributed Scientific and Engineering Computing (PDSEC-22) (http://www.ieee-tcsc.org/2022/pdsec/) will be held on May 30, 2022 in Lyon, France in conjunction with IPDPS 2022. Deadline: PDSEC-22 deadline: 21 Jan 2022 (AoE) Scope and Interests: The technological trends in HPC system evolution indicates an increasing burden placed on application developers due to themanagement of the unprecedented complexity levels of hardware and its associated performance characteristics. Many existing scientific applications codes are unlikely to perform well on future systems without major modifications or even complete rewrites. In the future, it will be necessary to utilize, in concert, many characteristics such as multiple levels of parallelism, many lightweight cores, complex memory hierarchies, novel I/O technology, power capping, system-wide temporal/spatial performance heterogeneity and reliability concerns. The parallel and distributed computing (PDC) community has developed new programming models, algorithms, libraries and tools to meet these challenges to accommodate productive code development and effective system use. However, the scientific application community still needs to identify the benefit through practical evaluations. Thus, the focus of this workshop is on methodologies and experiences used in scientific and engineering applications and algorithms to achieve sustainable code development for better productivity, application performance and reliability. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Call for Presentations 11th Ada Developer Room at FOSDEM 2022 Sunday 6 February 2022, Online, Everywhere www.cs.kuleuven.be/~dirk/ada-belgium/events/22/220206-fosdem.html Organized in cooperation with Ada-Belgium and Ada-Europe ----------------------------------------------------------------------- The Ada FOSDEM community is pleased to announce the 11th edition of the Ada DevRoom! This time, however, it will take place online on the 6th of February. This edition of the Ada DevRoom is organized in cooperation with Ada-Belgium [1] and Ada-Europe [2]. General Information about FOSDEM -------------------------------- FOSDEM [3], the Free and Open source Software Developers' European Meeting, is a free and non-commercial two-day weekend event organized early each year in Brussels, Belgium. This year, for obvious reasons, it has been turned into an online event, just like last year. It is highly developer-oriented and brings together 8000+ participants from all over the world. No registration is necessary. The goal is to provide open source developers and communities a place to meet with other developers and projects, to be informed about the latest developments in the open source world, to attend interesting talks and presentations on various topics by open source project leaders and committers, and to promote the development and the benefits of open source solutions. Ada Programming Language and Technology --------------------------------------- Awareness of safety and security issues in software systems is ever increasing. Multi-core platforms are now abundant. These are some of the reasons that the Ada programming language and technology attracts more and more attention, among others due to Ada's support for programming by contract and for multi-core targets. The latest Ada language definition was updated early 2016. Work on new features is ongoing, such as improved support for fine-grained parallelism, and will result in a new Ada standard scheduled for 2022. Ada-related technology such as SPARK provides a solution for the safety and security aspects stated above. More and more tools are available, many are open source, including for small and recent platforms. Interest in Ada keeps further increasing, also in the open source community, from which many exciting projects have been started. Ada Developer Room ------------------ FOSDEM is an ideal fit for an Ada Developer Room. On the one hand, it gives the general open source community an opportunity to see what is happening in the Ada community and how Ada can help to produce reliable and efficient open source software. On the other hand, it gives open source Ada projects an opportunity to present themselves, get feedback and ideas, and attract participants to their project and collaboration between projects. At previous FOSDEM events, the Ada-Belgium non-profit organization organized successful Ada Developer Rooms, offering a full day program in 2006 [4], a two-day program in 2009 [5], and full day programs in 2012-2016 [6-10], and in 2018-2020 [11-13]. An important goal is to present exciting Ada technology and projects, including people outside the traditional Ada community. This edition is no different, and since it will take place online, we hope to attract people from all over the world. Call for Presentations ---------------------- We would like to schedule technical presentations, tutorials, demos, live performances, project status reports, discussions, etc, in the Ada Developer Room. Do you have a talk you want to give? Do you have a project you would like to present? Would you like to get more people involved with your project? The Ada organizers call on you to: - discuss and help organize the details, subscribe to the Ada-FOSDEM mailing list [14]; - for bonus points, be a speaker: the Ada-FOSDEM mailing list is the place to be! - don't hesitate to propose a topic that you would like to present to the community, we are eager to know what you have in store for us! We're inviting proposals that are related to Ada software development, and include a technical oriented discussion. You're not limited to slide presentations, of course. Be creative. Propose something fun to share with people so they might feel some of your enthusiasm for Ada! Speaking slots should be 15 or 30 minutes, plus 5 or 10 minutes resp. for Q&A, if the same schedule as last year is followed. However, this schedule is flexible and can be modified for longer talks. For example, a long technical talk can be transformed into a 45 minutes talk, plus time for Q&A. Depending on interest, we might also have a session with lightning presentations (e.g. 5 minutes each), and/or an informal discussion session. Note that all talks will be streamed live (audio+video) and should be prerecorded. After the streaming of the talk, a live Q&A session will take place. By submitting a proposal, you agree to being recorded and streamed. While machine reasoning will enable intelligent systems to better understand and interact with their physical world, machine intelligence through modeling, simulation and automation, closes the gap between experiments, extreme computing, and scientic discovery. In order to usher in this new era of autonomous science, advances in several areas of artificial intelligence and other disciplines e.g., high-performance computing, data engineering need to come together. Therefore, the goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers from diverse backgrounds to enable extreme scaling of AI for science. This workshop will address the overarching goal of enabling semi-autonomous and autonomous AI-driven predictive and prescriptive scientic discovery at scale by integrating extreme-scale heterogeneous and reconfigurable computing paradigms, multiscale mathematics, physics-based simulation, data sciences and engineering to address challenges across science, scientic instruments, and security domains e.g., biology, chemistry, and material science. Position Location The postdocs will be paid by Henan University, China. The conference aims to provide an excellent forum to meet and discuss various important issues on image processing and applications. (Apologies if you received duplicate copies of this CFP) ============================ AusPDC 2022 will be held online in conjunction with Australasian Computer Science Week (ACSW 2022), 14 - 18 February 2022 (http://acsw.core.edu.au/) **SCOPE OF THE SYMPOSIUM** In 2010, AusGrid event was broadened to include all aspects of parallel and distributed computing and hence was called as Australasian Symposium on Parallel and Distributed Computing (AusPDC). Following a couple of successful events, it comes to the 20th in 2022 in the series. In both New Zealand and Australia parallel and distributed computing has been recognised as strategic technologies for driving their moves towards knowledge economies.
