SPECIAL ISSUE ON PARALLEL COMPUTING IN MODELLING AND SIMULATION Journal: Journal of Parallel and Distributed Computing SCOPE and OBJECTIVES Model development for the simulation of the evolution of artificial and natural systems is essential for the advancement of Science. Recently, the increasing power of computers has allowed to considerably extend the application of parallel computing methodologies in research and industry, but also to the quantitative study of complex phenomena. This has permitted a broad application of numerical methods for differential equation systems (e.g., FEM, FDM, etc.) on one hand, and the application of alternative computational paradigms, such as Cellular Automata, Genetic Algorithms, Neural networks, Swarm Intelligence, etc., on the other. These latter have demonstrated their effectiveness for modelling purposes when traditional simulation methodologies have proven to be impracticable. This Special issue aims to provide a platform for a multidisciplinary community composed of scholars, researchers, developers, educators, practitioners and experts from world leading Universities, Institutions, Agencies and Companies in Computational Science, and thus in the Parallel Computing for Modelling and Simulation field. The intent is to offer an opportunity to express and confront views on trends, challenges, and state-of-the art in diverse application fields, such as engineering, physics, chemistry, biology, geology, medicine, ecology, sociology, traffic control, economy, etc. TOPICS of INTEREST Tentative authors are invited to submit original unpublished works on topics from a wide range of parallel computing methods, including but not limited to the following: * Parallel algorithms for modelling and simulation * High-performance computing in computational science: intra-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary research applications * Complex systems modelling and simulation * Cellular Automata, Genetic Algorithms, Neural networks, Swarm Intelligence implementations * Integrated approach to optimization and simulation * MPI, OpenMP, GPGPU applications in Computational Science * Optimization algorithms, modelling techniques related to optimization in Computational Science * Software developed to solve science (e.g.,biological, physical, and social), engineering, medicine, and humanities problems * Hardware approaches of parallel computing in modelling and simulation IMPORTANT DATES Submission: 15th September 2017 First Notification: 1st December 2017 Revision Submission: 15th January 2018 Second Notification: 1st March 2018 Final version Submission: 1st April 2018 SUBMISSION GUIDELINES Regarding the paper submission, we expect that papers submitted to this special issue for possible publication must be original and must not be under consideration for publication in any other journal or conference. The formal methods can be used to specify, verify, and analyse in any part of the system life cycle: requirements engineering, modeling, design, architecture, implementation, testing, maintenance and evolution. This assumes on the one hand the development of adequate mathematical methods and frameworks and on the other hand the development of tools that help the user to effectively apply these methods/frameworks in the life cycle of the system. ICUB (The Research Institute of the University of Bucharest), the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of Bucharest, and the Faculty of Computer Science of the Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iasi organize FROM 2017, the first one from a yearly workshop series, meant to bring together Romanian researchers in formal methods and to foster international collaborations. Working Formal Methods Symposium (FROM) aims to bring together researchers and practitioners who work for formal methods by contributing with new theoretical results, methods, techniques, and frameworks, and/or make the formal methods to work by creating or using software tools that apply theoretical contributions. PhD Students are highly encouraged to participate and support for accommodation is available upon request. Call for papers First Annual Workshop on Programming Model Alternatives to Message Passing (PMAMP)-2017 September 25, 2017, Chicago, IL in collaboration with EuroMPI/USA 2017 https://memani1.github.io/pmamp17/ Overview: Message-passing programming models have dominated high-performance computing (HPC) for the past quarter century. With the continued breakdown of the (uniform) communicating sequential processors abstract machine model, many researchers have questioned the continued viability of message passing as a model for direct, application-level interaction. Recent years have seen an explosion of new paradigms in programming models for distributed-memory computing. The move to the next generation of HPC platforms presents a wider variety of challenges than ever before, that include the increased need for asynchrony, increased heterogeneity and performance non-uniformity, decreased hardware reliability and increased failure rates, increased hardware diversity, and the maintainability of increasingly complex scientific code bases. This workshop proposes to promote a dialogue between researchers who work on extensions or augmentations to message-passing models (the “evolutionary” crowd) to alternative programming models and to expose those who develop fundamentally different programming models (the “revolutionary” crowd) to the recent advances in message-passing programming models. It aims to help understand the relative importance of the concerns these new approaches address. The workshop seeks to garner a better understanding of key motivations for alternative programming models, key insights from advances in message passing (and how they can be applied to alternative models), and key opportunities for collaboration between researchers on both sides. Topics: We solicit preliminary work on programming models that offer extensions or alternatives to message passing, with emphasis on addressing emerging concerns in high performance computing (HPC), including topics relating to (but are not restricted to) the following: * Asynchrony * Heterogeneity * Performance non-uniformity * Fault-tolerance and resilience * Performance portability: a posteriori adaptability (“one code for many machines”) in situ adaptability (reactive and dynamic runtime system solutions) * Maintainability (particularly in the presence of these other challenges) * Testability and debuggability (particularly in the presence of these other challenges) * Experimental comparative results (particularly with emphasis on overall time-to-solution) * Relevance of alternate programming models to particular scientific kernels Also, we solicit position papers on analyzing the importance (or lack thereof) of the above topics for the future of HPC, again with emphasis on the need (or lack thereof) to address these concerns at the programming model level (thus, for instance, arguments for why the challenges can be addressed at other levels of the software stack without programming model intervention will also be considered). Cloud-enabled edge platforms will be able to cooperate not only with each other but with the cloud, effectively creating a collaborative and federated environment. This paradigm shift will fulfill the needs of novel services, such as augmented reality, that have particularly stringent requirements like extremely low latency. It will also help improve the vision of the Internet of Things by improving its scalability and overall functionality, among other benefits. To enable this vision, a number of platforms and technologies need to securely coexist, including sensors and actuators, edge-deployed systems, software-defined networks, hardware virtualization, data mining mechanisms, etc. However, this paradigm shift calls for new security challenges and opportunities to leverage services for new scenarios and applications. The field of edge computing security is almost unexplored, and demands further attention from the research community and industry in order to unleash the full potential of this paradigm. The 2017 IEEE International Conference on Big Data (IEEE Big Data 2017) will continue the success of the previous IEEE Big Data conferences. It will provide a leading forum for disseminating the latest research in Big Data Research, Development, and Applications. Workshop organizers will be responsible for advertising the workshop, forming the program committees, reviewing and selecting the papers, and guaranteeing a high quality worthy of the prestige and breadth of the Conference. --- APOLOGIZE FOR CROSS-POSTINGS --- Call for PhD Forum and Posters Track ----------------------------------------- After successful event as a part of ASONAM 2016, the PhD forum and posters track will again take place as part of 2017(ASONAM 201731 July - 03 August, 2017 Sydney, Australia) This forum will provide graduate students (e.g., PhD students, pre-doctoral students and Master leading to PhD students) and researchers with an opportunity to share, present, explore, develop their research ideas, and to receive feedback from the research community that will help them in further developing and progressing in their PhD studies. This will help students as prospective candidates to connect up with senior researchers participating in the conference. It will also stimulate collaborations between students with similar research interests. This forum is intended for students at any stage of their PhD work. All submissions will be thoroughly reviewed by experts in the field and will be selected based on their originality, timeliness, significance, relevance, and clarity of presentation. Further, authors should certify that their submissions contain substantially new and previously unpublished research. Students will be given an opportunity to present their proposals and get feedback and advice on how to improve their research plan. Submission ----------- We welcome submissions of research ideas that are mature enough to be presented and whose content can evolve to become the substantial part of a PhD dissertation. Reports on PhD dissertations and work in progress towards their dissertation should address research issues, challenges, and originality. Submissions should clearly describe the problem, explain its importance, detail why existing solutions are not sufficient, and give an outline of proposed solutions and preliminary experimental evaluation. Submissions should be written in English and pertaining to the topics mentioned in the Call for Paper page for the ASONAM 2017 conference. Two categories of submissions will be accepted: Full papers up to 8 pages Short communications up to 4 pages Extended abstracts for posters up to 2 pages For full papers, submissions should be based on more mature research proposals. For extended abstracts, submissions can be about preliminary research ideas or works in progress. All papers must be in IEEE two-columns format. This has permitted a broad application of numerical methods for differential equation systems (e.g., FEM, FDM, etc.) on one hand, and the application of alternative computational paradigms, such as Cellular Automata, Genetic Algorithms, Neural networks, Swarm Intelligence, etc., on the other. These latter have demonstrated their effectiveness for modelling purposes when traditional simulation methodologies have proven to be impracticable. CALL FOR PAPERS PGAS Applications Workshop at PPAM 2017 (http://pcj.icm.edu.pl/pgasapp2017) PGAS APP is a full-day workshop to be held at the PPAM 2017 focusing on PGAS (Partitioned Global Address Space) programming model and its application for large-scale parallel systems and multicore processors. Its goal is to bring together researchers working in the area of PGAS programming paradigm to parallelize large scale applications. The workshop focuses on PGAS programming languages, tools and libraries with the special focus on applications developed within this programming model. The workshop is open to any PGAS languages, with the special focus of new solutions. This workshop will feature papers that explore experiences from application developers in the use of the PGAS programming model for the development of scalable codes. The papers presented practical implementations, scalability and parallelization efficiency are foreseen. Cyber security researchers, as well as security professionals from industry and government, have proposed various graphical security modeling schemes. Such models are used to capture different security facets (digital, physical, and social) and address a range of challenges including vulnerability assessment, risk analysis, defense analysis, automated defensing, secure services composition, policy validation and verification. *** Apologies for multiple copies *** ================================================================================ C a l l F o r P a p e r s COMPUTER NETWORKS JOURNAL - Elsevier Special Issue: Security and Privacy in Cloud-Assisted Cyber-Physical Systems ================================================================================ Cloud-assisted Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) feature a tight coupling between embedded computing devices and their physical environment. CPSes can be viewed as the bridge between physical components/processes and the cyber space. Specifically, the notion of CPSes is to use computing (e.g. sensing, analyzing and predicting), communication (e.g. interaction, intervene and interface management), and controlling (e.g. inter-operation, evolving and evidence-based certification) to make intelligent and autonomous systems. Recent years have seen a dramatic rise in the development of CPSes services, including ubiquitous health care, smart electricity grid, and smart buildings. However, the fast-growing data volume is hard to process. The present CPSes cannot support ultra-fast computing, and thus it cannot provide real-time and reliable services to meet the requirements, which are essential for mission-critical systems. Fortunately, cloud infrastructures and platforms can provide flexible and on-demand processing power and high-capacity storage for data streams, as well as provisioning of a variety of services using telecommunication and networking technologies. Thus, the large-scale nature of CPSes can be effectively and efficiently supported and assisted by cloud systems, which is referred to as cloud-assisted CPSes (Cloud-CPS). The coupling of cloud systems and CPSes, though advantageous, is subject to new forms of risks that have not been considered adequately in the traditional computing domain. CPSes often collect sensitive and private information about the physical environment. A loss of security for a CPS can therefore have significant negative impact including loss of privacy, potential physical harm, discrimination, and abuse. Though numerous security primitives have been developed in the cyber domain to address the very same problems, their applicability to the Cloud-CPSes domain is still questionable due to the reason that they are usually complex to implement and oblivious to cyber-physical interactions. The goal of this special issue is to unveil and address the security and privacy aspects associated to the Cloud-CPeSs. However, in order to continue a performance increase according to Moore's Law, a next step needs to be taken: away from common multicores towards innovative many-core architectures. Such systems, equipped with a significant higher amount of cores per chip than multicores, pose challenges in both hardware and software design. On the hardware side, complex on-chip networks, scratchpads, hybrid memory cubes, non-volatile memory and stacked memory, as well as deep cache-hierarchies and novel cache-coherence strategies will enrich the current research areas in the future. However, the ROME workshop focuses on the software side because without complying system software, runtime and operating system support, all these new hardware facilities cannot be exploited. Hence, the new challenges in hardware/software co-design are to step beyond traditional approaches and to wage new programming models and operating system designs in order to exploit the theoretically available performance of future hardware as effectively and power-aware as possible. Topics ------ This year, too, authors from all related disciplines are invited to submit unpublished papers regarding software for novel many-core hardware architectures. The call for papers especially emphasizes on the challenges and research questions arising from the upcoming generation of heterogeneous and/or massive parallel systems stepping towards a many-core dominated exascale era. CALL FOR PAPERS: IWOMP 2017 - 13th International Workshop on OpenMP September 20-22, 2017 Stony Brook University, Stony Brook, NY, USA http://www.iwomp.org == Background For many years, the OpenMP API has provided a very rich and flexible programming model for shared memory architectures. OpenMP 4.0 is a major advance that adds new forms of parallelism: device constructs for accelerators, SIMD constructs for vector units, and several significant extensions for work-sharing, affinity, and task-based parallelism. OpenMP 4.5 further enhances OpenMP support for todayâ€™s complex heterogeneous architectures. To the benefit of applications using the API, a strong ecosystem of compilers, runtime systems, and tools from various vendors and community partners has also emerged. The International Workshop on OpenMP (IWOMP) is an annual workshop dedicated to the promotion and advancement of all aspects of parallel programming with OpenMP. It is the premier forum to present and to discuss issues, trends, recent research ideas, and results related to parallel programming with OpenMP. We solicit quality submissions of unpublished technical papers detailing innovative, original research and development related to OpenMP. == Topics All topics related to OpenMP are of interest, including OpenMP performance analysis and modeling, OpenMP performance and correctness tools, proposed OpenMP extensions, and OpenMP applications in any domain (e.g., scientific and numerical computation, video games, computer graphics, multimedia, information retrieval, optimization, text processing, data mining, finance, signal and image processing and machine learning). Advances in technologies, such as multi-core processors and OpenMP devices (accelerators such as GPGPUs, DSPs or FPGAs), Multiprocessor Systems on a Chip (MPSoCs), and recent developments in OpenMP itself (e.g., devices) present new opportunities and challenges for software and hardware developers. The formal methods can be used to specify, verify, and analyse in any part of the system life cycle: requirements engineering, modeling, design, architecture, implementation, testing, maintenance and evolution. This assumes on the one hand the development of adequate mathematical methods and frameworks and on the other hand the development of tools that help the user to effectively apply these methods/frameworks in the life cycle of the system. Authors of selected papers that are accepted by and presented at the ARES Conference (including workshops) will be invited to submit an extended version to special issues of international journals. Authors are invited to submit research and application papers according the following guidelines: two columns, single-spaced, including figures and references, using 10 pt fonts and number each page. For the workshops submission papers are have to be representing original, previously unpublished work: 8 pages, a maximum of 10 pages is tolerated Submitted papers will be carefully evaluated based on originality, significance, technical soundness, presentation and clarity of exposition. Simultaneous submission of the same work to multiple venues, submission of previously published work, or plagiarism constitutes dishonesty or fraud. ARES, like other scientific and technical conferences and journals, prohibits these practices and may take action against authors who have committed them. The formal methods can be used to specify, verify, and analyse in any part of the system life cycle: requirements engineering, modeling, design, architecture, implementation, testing, maintenance and evolution. This assumes on the one hand the development of adequate mathematical methods and frameworks and on the other hand the development of tools that help the user to effectively apply these methods/frameworks in the life cycle of the system. ICUB (The Research Institute of the University of Bucharest), the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of Bucharest, and the Faculty of Computer Science of the Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iasi organize FROM 2017, the first one from a yearly workshop series, meant to bring together Romanian researchers in formal methods and to foster international collaborations. Working Formal Methods Symposium (FROM) aims to bring together researchers and practitioners who work for formal methods by contributing with new theoretical results, methods, techniques, and frameworks, and/or make the formal methods to work by creating or using software tools that apply theoretical contributions. PhD Students are highly encouraged to participate and support for accommodation is available upon request. The program of the symposium will include invited lectures (the current list can be seen on the workshop web page) and regular contributions. Submissions on the general topic of theoretical computer science, formal methods and applications are solicited.
