*** Apologies for multiple copies *** ================================================================================ C a l l F o r P a p e r s COMPUTER NETWORKS JOURNAL - Elsevier Special Issue: Security and Privacy in Cloud-Assisted Cyber-Physical Systems ================================================================================ Cloud-assisted Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) feature a tight coupling between embedded computing devices and their physical environment. CPSes can be viewed as the bridge between physical components/processes and the cyber space. Specifically, the notion of CPSes is to use computing (e.g. sensing, analyzing and predicting), communication (e.g. interaction, intervene and interface management), and controlling (e.g. inter-operation, evolving and evidence-based certification) to make intelligent and autonomous systems. Recent years have seen a dramatic rise in the development of CPSes services, including ubiquitous health care, smart electricity grid, and smart buildings. However, the fast-growing data volume is hard to process. The present CPSes cannot support ultra-fast computing, and thus it cannot provide real-time and reliable services to meet the requirements, which are essential for mission-critical systems. Fortunately, cloud infrastructures and platforms can provide flexible and on-demand processing power and high-capacity storage for data streams, as well as provisioning of a variety of services using telecommunication and networking technologies. Thus, the large-scale nature of CPSes can be effectively and efficiently supported and assisted by cloud systems, which is referred to as cloud-assisted CPSes (Cloud-CPS). The coupling of cloud systems and CPSes, though advantageous, is subject to new forms of risks that have not been considered adequately in the traditional computing domain. CPSes often collect sensitive and private information about the physical environment. A loss of security for a CPS can therefore have significant negative impact including loss of privacy, potential physical harm, discrimination, and abuse. Though numerous security primitives have been developed in the cyber domain to address the very same problems, their applicability to the Cloud-CPSes domain is still questionable due to the reason that they are usually complex to implement and oblivious to cyber-physical interactions. The goal of this special issue is to unveil and address the security and privacy aspects associated to the Cloud-CPeSs. The scope of this special issue deals with the scientific and technological issues for building smart environments made of connected devices and cloud computing support. Overview Most of the current IoT advances are mainly focused on sensors, connectivity networks and architectures, however the key-enabling aspect of this paradigm is the implementation of user-centred applications that focus on improving the life of citizens and the places in which they live. Smart cities, assisted living, transportation, sport monitoring and health applications are just some examples of applications which have emerged in this domain. The development of smart objects, embedded intelligence, and smart networks may further aid progress. In addition, connecting the Internet-of-Things to the Cloud can address the problem of access to near-limitless computational power and allows to unlock advanced multi-tiered IoT applications and to provide smarter behaviour of the IoT systems. However, this paradigm still has technological and scientific challenges related to several areas of computing and communications. The objective of this special issue is to bring together the state-of-the-art research contributions that address key aspects of Smart Environments powered by Internet of Things and related areas. As a result, cyber-attacks on these cloud-based systems can have a dramatic impact on all aspects of our lives. Cloud security is an active area of research, involving many approaches for ensuring the confidentiality, availability, and integrity of data and applications hosted in the cloud. However, existing techniques for securing cloud-based systems, including autonomic-based cloud systems, are based on the assumption that people will be involved in managing them. These techniques require end user input to implement effective cybersecurity strategies to defend the systems. The emerging area of Autonomic Cybersecurity can provide solutions that complement existing cybersecurity techniques in the cloud. The goal of Autonomic Cybersecurity is to use Autonomic Computing techniques and approaches to defend computing systems. The Autonomics and Cloud Security workshop aims to investigate approaches to cloud security in general, including cloud-based autonomic systems, as well as autonomic cybersecurity approaches for defending cloud-based systems. Cloud-enabled edge platforms will be able to cooperate not only with each other but with the cloud, effectively creating a collaborative and federated environment. This paradigm shift will fulfill the needs of novel services, such as augmented reality, that have particularly stringent requirements like extremely low latency. Up to three new research positions are available in the Data Mining & Machine Learning Research Group, led by Dr Michael Madden in the National University of Ireland Galway, to contribute to a substantial European Union research project called ROCSAFE, which involves an exciting combination of aerial robotics, ground-based robotics, sensing systems, image analysis, and artificial intelligence. There are positions available for a software engineer and for two research scholars (MSc by research with possibility to transition to PhD). The software engineer will receive a salary commensurate with experience. The MSc students will receive a tax-free scholarship of €16,000 per year, with fees also paid. Additional funding is provided for research-related travel. The research and software development work is likely to involve topics such as: (1) development of communications protocols and simulation of a realistic multi-agent system; (2) routing of autonomous vehicles for optimal collection of multi-resolution image and sensor data; (3) context-aware decision support driven by sensor data analytics. New PhD in AI/Machine Learning in a life-saving application

Hello all; I would be grateful if you could bring this to the attention of relevant students. A new PhD position is available in the Data Mining & Machine Learning Research Group, led by Dr Michael Madden in the National University of Ireland Galway. The successful candidate will join the Data Mining & Machine Learning Group and contribute to a new research project, ROCSAFE (see below) funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Programme. The research is likely to involve one of: (1) advances in temporal Bayesian reasoning for decision support; (2) routing of autonomous vehicles for optimal collection of multi-resolution image and sensor data; (3) context-aware decision support driven by sensor data analytics. The successful candidate will receive a tax-free scholarship of €18,000 per year, with fees also paid and additional funding available for research-related travel. This is an excellent opportunity to combine research with software development, working in a flexible and stimulating research environment, while collaborating with academic and industrial partners across Europe, with occasional travel to meet partners and to attend research conferences. Candidates must have a strong honours bachelor degree (equivalent to H1) in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, or a similar discipline, and preferably a relevant MSc degree also. The volume of big data often grows exponentially or even in rates that overwhelm the well-known Moore’s Law. Meanwhile, big data has been extended from traditional structured data into semi-structured and completely unstructured data of various types, such as text, image, audio, video, click streams, log files, etc. It is no doubt that big data can offer us unprecedented opportunities. However, it also poses many grand challenges. Due to the massive volume and inherent complexity, it is extremely difficult to store, aggregate, manage, and analyze big data and finally mine valuable information/knowledge from the complex data/information networks. Therefore, in the presence of big data, the theories, models, algorithms and methods of traditional data related fields, such as, data mining, data engineering, machine learning, statistical learning, computer programming, pattern recognition and learning, visualization, uncertainty modeling, and high performance computing etc., become no longer effective and efficient. On the other hand, some data is generated exponentially or super-exponentially in a streaming manner. Therefore, how to delicately analyze and deeply understand big data so as to obtain dynamical and incremental information / knowledge, is a grand challenge. In general, at the era of big data, it is expected to develop new theories, models, algorithms, methods, and paradigms for mining, analyzing, and understanding big data, and even a new inter-discipline, Data Science, for studying the perception, acquisition, transportation, storage, management, analysis, visualization, and applications of big data, and finally implement the transformation from data to knowledge. DSBDA 2017 aims to provide a networking venue that will bring together scientists, researchers, professionals, and practitioners from both industry and academia and from different disciplines (including computer science, social science, network science, etc.) to exchange ideas, discuss solutions, share experiences, promote collaborations, and report state-of-the-art research work on various aspects of data science and big data analytics. The workshop is the annual main event of ComSoc’s Emerging Technical Committee on Quantum Communications and Information Technology (ETC-QCIT). Over the last decade, a wide variety of experimental quantum communications and processing devices has been invented and used for fundamental demonstrations in laboratories. Companies and governments started to spend significant amounts of funding in research and development of quantum technologies. Considering the complex analysis pipeline of the biomedical research, the bottleneck is more and more moving toward the storage, integration, and analysis of experimental data, as well as their correlation and integration with publicly available data banks. While Parallel Computing and Grid Computing may offer the computational power and the storage to face this overwhelming availability of data, Cloud Computing is a key technology to hide the complexity of computing infrastructures, to reduce the cost of the data analysis task, and especially to change the overall model of biomedical research and health provision. Grid infrastructures may offer the data storage needed to store the huge experimental and biomedical data, while parallel computing can be used for basic pre-processing (e.g. parallel BLAST, mpiBLAST) and for more advanced analysis (e.g. parallel data mining). In such a scenario, novel parallel architectures (e.g. CELL processors, GPUs, FPGA, hybrid CPU/FPGA) coupled with emerging programming models may overcome the limits posed by conventional computers to the mining and exploration of large amounts of data. On the other hand, these technologies yet require great investments by biomedical and clinical institutions and are based on a traditional model where users often need to be aware and face different management problems, such as hardware and software management, data storage, software ownership, and not scalable costs (different professional-level applications in the biomedical domain have high starting costs that prevent many small laboratories to use them). The Cloud Computing technology, that is able to offer scalable costs and increased reachability, availability and easiness of application use, and also the possibility to enforce collaboration among scientists, is already changing the business model in different domains and now it starts to be used also in the bioinformatics (see for instance the recent JCVI Cloud Bio-Linux initiative) and biomedical domains. However, many problems remain to be solved, such as availability and safety of the data, privacy-related issues, availability of software platforms for rapid deployment, execution and billing of biomedical applications. The goal of ParBio 2017 is to bring together scientists in the fields of high performance and cloud computing, computational biology and medicine, to discuss, among the others, the organization of large scale biological and biomedical databases, the parallel/service-based implementation of bioinformatics and biomedical applications, and problems and opportunities of moving biomedical and health applications on the cloud. The workshop will focus on research issues, problems and opportunities of moving biomedical and health applications on the cloud, as well as on the opportunity to define guidelines and minimum requirements for a Biomedical Cloud. Moreover, the workshop will discuss about parallel and distributed management and analysis of molecular and clinical data, that more and more need to be integrated and analyzed in a joint way. Tokyo, Japan Workshop Website: https://www.eecis.udel.edu/~hfang/ATIR.html <https://www.eecis.udel.edu/~hfang/ATIR.html> Motivation The goal of the proposed workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners interested in applying axiomatic analysis to all kinds of IR and IR-related problems, including particularly both those interested in developing retrieval models and those interested in developing evaluation measures, and to enable them to share their findings (both positive or negative), to present their latest research results, and to discuss future directions. Theme As the title of the workshop suggested, the general theme of the workshop will be about all aspects of applications of axiomatic thinking to solve IR and IR-related problems. The basis of this general theme is the recent growth of work on applying axiomatic thinking to analyze and improve both retrieval models and evaluation metrics, which we expect to continue. The existing work has clearly demonstrated many advantages of axiomatic thinking, including particularly specific theoretical results in the form of novel constraints to be satisfied by retrieval functions or evaluation metrics and improved models or evaluation metrics. However, much more research is still needed in multiple directions. Opportunities of applying axiomatic thinking also go beyond analyzing the basic retrieval functions; in fact, understanding constraints is also beneficial to many IR tasks that use machine learning techniques. Instead of having a designer carefully choose a set of assumptions to make when designing a formal model, these approaches use machine learning to weight items in a pool of features derived from many retrieval heuristics. However, this potentially results in a bloated backend which computes many features irrelevant to the task or collection. Having knowledge about relevant features would help slim down backends and speed learning and ranking. An important strength of the axiomatic methodology is that evaluation data sets become resources used to check motivated hypotheses instead of optimization mechanisms, which are at risk of overfitting. There are even more opportunities for new research on applying axiomatic thinking to evaluation as has already been happening where researchers have done axiomatic analysis of metrics for tasks such as text categorization, clustering, and ranking. In general, an understanding of how to apply axiomatic thinking to IR problems may become increasingly important as information retrieval continues to broaden into new areas. New tasks often require new constraints, and an understanding of these constraints can provide guidance on how to adapt existing methods or how to develop new methods for the new tasks. For example, domain-specific IR tasks such as medical record search might require new retrieval constraints that can capture the domain knowledge. The workshop aims to bring together researchers and practitioners from a broader community to exchange research ideas and results and to foster collaborations across subcommunities. Some of the specific topics we envision to be covered by the workshop theme include, but not limited to: - What constraints are effective to improve retrieval performance independent of the underlying model? - What constraints were expected to be useful but have not been effective in practice? Why not? - In the case of evaluation metrics, why some metric constraints do not affect the system comparison or the user satisfaction? - How can we potentially unify the axiomatic analysis of IR models and evaluation metrics given that both lines of work aim at formally modeling relevance? - Have new languages, media, or domains suggested new constraints for established domains? - To what extent is a valid constraint in one domain also valid in other domains? More generally, which constraints for retrieval methods or evaluation metrics are core ones, and which constraints are highly scenario dependent? - How can axiomatic thinking be combined with machine learning techniques to learn more effective retrieval functions? With the growth of data and technologies, visual analytics platforms have been extended from ordinary personal computers to different environments such as large and high resolution displays, portable devices and virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) or both. Immersive visual analytics have been considering one of the potential approaches for analysing and manipulating large data sets. Large immersive systems may not be suitable for individual analysts due to their size, complexity and the lack of portability. Portable immersive environment, such as Microsoft Hololens, gives the users holograms real-world context and scale, allowing them to interact with both digital content and the world around them. The device could open a new research direction in analysing large information interactively and in real time in the personalised and immersive environment. This project looks at a new way to use supporting technologies in virtual reality and augmented reality to support the large scale visual analytics. The specific objectives of this research are to * Investigate new interactive visualisation platform for VR and AR environment. * Integrate and expand knowledge in information visualisation, artificial intelligent with technologies to enable personalised visualisation. * Develop new methods and algorithms that enables the natural interaction and data manipulation in the immersive environment. * Evaluate the effectiveness of the visual analytics What does the scholarship provide? * Domestic students receive a tax-free stipend of up to AU$30,000 per annum for up to 3 years, and a funded place in the doctoral program. * International students receive a tax-free stipend up to AU$30,000 per annum. Cyber Security PhD Scholarship – The University of Newcastle with the Defense Science and Technology (DST) Group Supervisors: Prof. Vijay Varadharajan, The University of Newcastle and Dr. Anton V. Uzunov, DST Group Topic Area: Advanced Authorization Infrastructures for Distributed Autonomic Systems Autonomic computing – or equivalently, self-adaptive computing – is concerned with supporting dynamic system evolution in response to changing internal or external circumstances, by endowing systems with automated self-management capabilities, thereby turning ordinary software systems into autonomic systems (or equivalently, self-adaptive or self-managing systems). One of the core properties whose enforcement leads to supporting such self-management capabilities is self-protection, which can be defined as a system’s ability to anticipate, to prevent, to detect and guard itself against cyber security threats. A significant problem with self-protection is how to constrain and control system actions, which involves aspects such as specification of privileges to perform actions, propagation of privileges in a distributed environment and their enforcement in heterogeneous systems and devices, ranging from cloud servers to mobile Internet of Things. The project is expected to investigate cryptographically enforced access control models and distributed capability-based models. The research will consider how access classes and capabilities with different privileges can be specified, keys and capabilities can be securely propagated in distributed, heterogeneous environments, how access to services and to devices/nodes should be enforced in a decentralized context, and what adaptation mechanisms should be applied in response to changing system/operational conditions. The project will involve the design of security architecture, development of new algorithms as well as the development of proof-of-concept implementations or case studies to validate the developed models and techniques in simulated or real-life scenarios. It is envisioned that the outcomes and outputs of the project will be specifically applicable to both IoT and autonomous cyber defense scenarios, and all case studies and/or application examples will be drawn from these areas. Department of Computer Science To work on the niche research area "Environment and Health", the Department of Computer Science now invites applications for tenure-track faculty positions, in the areas of health informatics, artificial intelligence, data analytics, machine learning, security and privacy, and cloud computing. The appointees are expected to teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses including programme management, perform high-impact research, as well as contribute to professional and institutional services. Collaboration with other faculty members in research and teaching is also expected. CFC: “Exploring Intelligent Decision Support Systems: Current State and New Trends” To be published by Springer Verlag on Studies in Computational Intelligence book series Overview Decision Support Systems (DSS) are gaining an increased popularity in various domains, including business, engineering, the military, and medicine. They are especially valuable in situations in which the amount of available information is prohibitive for the intuition of an unaided human decision maker and in which precision and optimality are of importance. Decision support systems can aid human cognitive deficiencies by integrating various sources of information, providing intelligent access to relevant knowledge, and aiding the process of structuring decisions. They can also support choice among well-defined alternatives and build on formal approaches, such as the methods of engineering economics, operations research, statistics, and decision theory. They can also employ artificial intelligence methods to address heuristically problems that are intractable by formal techniques. Proper application of decision-making tools increases productivity, efficiency, and effectiveness and gives many businesses a comparative advantage over their competitors, allowing them to make optimal choices for technological processes and their parameters, planning business operations, logistics, or investments. These systems allow individuals and organizations to deal with unstructured or semi-structured decision problems that demand extensive experience and expert knowledge. However, the increasing complexity of the problems and the continuous growing of information and knowledge that should be mastered by responsible people in organizations underline the need for DSSs driven by advanced and modern technologies. From this perspective, the field of DSS is expanding to use new technologies such as Social Media, Semantic Web, Linked Data, Big Data, and Machine Learning. Type of contributions and length • Case studies: In-depth reports of DSS implementations to support decision-making in an organization or business. • Full research papers: Both quantitative and qualitative contributions that study a particular aspect of Decision Support Systems. Only completed research will be considered, meaning that research in progress will not be considered to be included in the book. • Conceptual papers: Contributions that synthesize existing studies. This type of contributions are typically 15 to 20 pages in length (excluding references) when applying the Springer formatting instructions. Contributions should be original and not be submitted elsewhere. Submission Guidelines and Other Considerations Chapters submitted must not have been previously published or be under consideration for publication in other journals, books, though they may represent significant extensions of prior work. All submitted chapters will undergo a rigorous peer-review process (with at least two reviewers) that will consider programmatic relevance, scientific quality, significance, originality, style and clarity. The acceptance process will focus on chapters that address relevant contributions in the form of theoretical and experimental research and case studies applying new perspectives for developing Decision Support Systems. Before submitting a chapter proposal, authors must carefully read over the Springer’s Author Guidelines. Call for Papers The Third International Workshop on Security in NFV-SDN in conjunction with the 3rd IEEE NFV-SDN conference, 6-8 November, Berlin, Germany Workshop website: http://www.sn-2017.info/ Scope Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and Software Defined Network (SDN) have changed the networking industry dramatically. NFV virtualizes network services by utilizing virtualization technologies to reduce the dependency on underlying hardware. NFV provides many benefits such as faster service enablement, ease of resource management and lower OPEX and CAPEX. SDN separates the control functions from the underlying physical network by decoupling the control and data planes. SDN provides many benefits such as reduced costs, ease of deployment and management, better scalability, availability, flexibility and fine-grain control of traffic and security. Like traditional networks, they are subject to various security threats and attacks. In this workshop, we invite high-quality submissions in the areas of NFV and SDN security and other related areas. SCOPE Graphical security models provide an intuitive but systematic approach to analyze security weaknesses of systems and to evaluate potential protection measures. Cyber security researchers, as well as security professionals from industry and government, have proposed various graphical security modeling schemes. Such models are used to capture different security facets (digital, physical, and social) and address a range of challenges including vulnerability assessment, risk analysis, defense analysis, automated defensing, secure services composition, policy validation and verification. The objective of the GraMSec workshop is to contribute to the development of well-founded graphical security models, efficient algorithms for their analysis, as well as methodologies for their practical usage. TOPICS The workshop seeks submissions from academia, industry, and government presenting novel research on all theoretical and practical aspects of graphical models for security. Tokyo, Japan Workshop Website: https://www.eecis.udel.edu/~hfang/ATIR.html Motivation The goal of the proposed workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners interested in applying axiomatic analysis to all kinds of IR and IR-related problems, including particularly both those interested in developing retrieval models and those interested in developing evaluation measures, and to enable them to share their findings (both positive or negative), to present their latest research results, and to discuss future directions. Theme As the title of the workshop suggested, the general theme of the workshop will be about all aspects of applications of axiomatic thinking to solve IR and IR-related problems. The basis of this general theme is the recent growth of work on applying axiomatic thinking to analyze and improve both retrieval models and evaluation metrics, which we expect to continue. The existing work has clearly demonstrated many advantages of axiomatic thinking, including particularly specific theoretical results in the form of novel constraints to be satisfied by retrieval functions or evaluation metrics and improved models or evaluation metrics. However, much more research is still needed in multiple directions. Opportunities of applying axiomatic thinking also go beyond analyzing the basic retrieval functions; in fact, understanding constraints is also beneficial to many IR tasks that use machine learning techniques. Instead of having a designer carefully choose a set of assumptions to make when designing a formal model, these approaches use machine learning to weight items in a pool of features derived from many retrieval heuristics. However, this potentially results in a bloated backend which computes many features irrelevant to the task or collection. Having knowledge about relevant features would help slim down backends and speed learning and ranking. An important strength of the axiomatic methodology is that evaluation data sets become resources used to check motivated hypotheses instead of optimization mechanisms, which are at risk of overfitting. There are even more opportunities for new research on applying axiomatic thinking to evaluation as has already been happening where researchers have done axiomatic analysis of metrics for tasks such as text categorization, clustering, and ranking. In general, an understanding of how to apply axiomatic thinking to IR problems may become increasingly important as information retrieval continues to broaden into new areas. New tasks often require new constraints, and an understanding of these constraints can provide guidance on how to adapt existing methods or how to develop new methods for the new tasks. For example, domain-specific IR tasks such as medical record search might require new retrieval constraints that can capture the domain knowledge. The workshop aims to bring together researchers and practitioners from a broader community to exchange research ideas and results and to foster collaborations across subcommunities. Some of the specific topics we envision to be covered by the workshop theme include, but not limited to: - What constraints are effective to improve retrieval performance independent of the underlying model? - What constraints were expected to be useful but have not been effective in practice? Why not? - In the case of evaluation metrics, why some metric constraints do not affect the system comparison or the user satisfaction? - How can we potentially unify the axiomatic analysis of IR models and evaluation metrics given that both lines of work aim at formally modeling relevance? - Have new languages, media, or domains suggested new constraints for established domains? - To what extent is a valid constraint in one domain also valid in other domains? More generally, which constraints for retrieval methods or evaluation metrics are core ones, and which constraints are highly scenario dependent? - How can axiomatic thinking be combined with machine learning techniques to learn more effective retrieval functions? As more people and their devices are connected without much restriction, the issues of security, privacy, and trust remain a challenge. Multimedia in IoT services should provide a robust and resilient security platforms and solutions against any unauthorized access. Recent literature shows increased concerns about hacking, security breaches, data manipulation, social engineering, and new attack methods. Malware can be hidden within multimedia files and visiting infected websites can trigger its download to victims’ machines. There are a multitude of techniques to steal personal information and other sensitive media for unauthorized dissemination; imposters/identity thefts are common in social networks. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of resilient security and privacy solutions, methods such as new standards, advance cryptography, improved algorithms for intrusion detection, personalized privacy, and isolation of questionable or malicious files can be used independently or all together to minimize the threats. Multimedia has expanded beyond the scope its original definition. With the rise of social media, large quantities of multimedia (e.g., pictures, videos, data, analytics and personal information) can be created in a short period of time. When all these data are stored in a cloud environment, many people can connect to these services for viewing, sharing, commenting, and storing information. IoT represents a collection of devices, platforms, and software that allow people to store and share data in the cloud and also connects different types of clouds altogether. Hence, multimedia in the IoT serves a significant purpose as many people’s updates, status, locations, and live actions can be seen, disseminated, tracked, commented on, and monitored in near real time. IoT opens up many possibilities since more people can broadcast themselves and allow their networks to view and share in their lives. There are also increased fraudulent activities, cybercrimes, unauthorized access, malicious attacks, phishing, and impersonating/stealing identities. This presents challenges for existing areas such as access control, authentication, data leakage, permission, social engineering, denial of service, and identity management for the attackers to impose identity, steal information, and manipulate data in the IoT environment. Challenges also include new problems such as large scale attacks and prevention, the strength of security protection (e.g., common encryption algorithms), hiding malware with multimedia, location-based privacy with high accuracy and anonymity, underground criminal networks, and hidden security breaches. Our workshop will allow a specific venue for the publication of work addressing these concerns, specific to the IoT ecosystem. Extensive research and development in the past few years has pushed SOC technology into state-of-the-art applications in emerging areas such as Cloud computing, Internet-of-Things (IoT), Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication, Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs), Mobile-Edge Computing, Social computing as well as mobile and enterprise systems. However, many of the critical components on building reliable, robust, and user-centric, cloud-based service-oriented architecture applications and systems are still open for research. Hence, it is time to face new service-oriented architecture (SOA) research opportunities by addressing new research challenges on emerging applications domains like smart cities, smart logistics, smart factories and e-Health, just to mention a few. Many of the service components are deployed on resource-limited embedded systems and are performance sensitive; others are deployed on cloud servers providing highly parallel services and on edge servers in the middle of resource-limited systems and high-end servers. Edge servers and clouds are connected through various types of networks, including emerging network function virtualization services. These components are part of complex applications and systems that span multiple execution environments. Their capabilities are increasingly being managed and (re)configured via emerging software-defined and elasticity mechanisms. In addition, they have to interact with humans in order to obtain useful human-sensing data and solve complex problems. Thus, on the one hand, SOC may provide effective solutions for managing the ever-increasing complexity while meeting the challenging requirements of services on largely distributed, heterogeneous and dynamic resource environments. On the other hand, the exploitation of emerging trends in such environments to build SOC applications and systems for large-scale service-based systems is an open research challenge.
