Dear Collegues, EUSIPCO 2018 (26th European Signal Processing Conference) will be held in Rome in the first week of September 2018 - http://www.eusipco2018.org. EUSIPCO traditionally includes a set of high-quality special sessions on emerging topics that attract top-quality researchers. As special sessions chairs we would like to invite you to organize a special session at EUSIPCO 2018, on an emerging topic of your interest. If you can accept this invitation please let us know the topic of your proposal. Then, a complete proposal should be submitted by December 11, 2017, including the following information: - Special Session title - Short description of proposed field (one paragraph) - Novelty and motivation (one to two paragraphs), including why this topic is of interest to the EUSIPCO community - Short biography of the organizers - List of contributed papers (titles, authors w. affiliations, and a short abstract). The targeted number of papers per session is 6, and at least 4 of them should not include the organizers as authors. Proposals will be evaluated based on topic novelty and associated impact, organizing committee qualifications, as well as the proposed list of contributed papers. Call for Tutorials ------------------ Tutorials should address subjects that fall within the scope of the conference and may be proposed as either half- or full-day. Proposals should include a title, an abstract, a description of the topic, a detailed outline of the presentation, a description of the presenter's lecturing expertise in general and with the proposed topic in particular, the proposed duration (half day or full day), the intended level of the tutorial (introductory, intermediate, or advanced), the recommended audience experience and background, and a statement of the reasons for attending. Proposals should be submitted by e-mail to the Tutorial Chair. The authors of accepted full-day tutorials will receive a complimentary conference registration as well as a fee for every paying participant in excess of 5; for half-day tutorials, these benefits will be accordingly halved. The conference theme for 2018 will be decentralized time-sensitive computing and enabling software infrastructures. This theme will focus on both: (1) Cloud infrastructures and platforms for time-sensitive computation and real-time computing (2) Algorithms and Computational Infrastructure to support complex social cyber-physical systems combining edge, fog, and cloud. We solicit high-quality papers pertaining to all aspects of ORC technology and especially those that are well aligned with the 2018 theme. Approaches related to stream correlation and sampling. * System software: real-time kernels and OS, middleware support for ORC, QoS management, extensibility, synchronization, resource allocation, scheduling, fault tolerance, security. * Real-time algorithms and infrastructure support for decentralized architectures including distributed ledgers with a focus on scalability and resilience. * Applications: Medical devices, intelligent transportation systems, Industrial automation systems and Industry 4.0, Internet of Things and Smart Grids, Embedded systems (automotive, avionics, consumer electronics, building systems, sensors, etc.), multimedia processing, RT Web-based applications. * System evaluation: performance analysis, monitoring & timing, dependability, end-to-end QoS, overhead, fault detection and recovery time. * Cyber-physical and Cyber-social systems (e.g. social media analytics) Submission guidelines: -------------------------- IEEE ISORC 2018 invites papers in three categories. 1) Regular Research Papers: Papers should describe original work and be maximum 8 pages in length using the IEEE paper format. A maximum of two extra pages may be purchased. 2) Industrial Papers and Practitioner Reports: Papers describing experiences of using ORC technology in application or tool development projects, are an integral part of the technical program of ISORC. A majority of these papers are expected to be shorter and less formal than research papers. They should clearly identify and discuss in detail the issues that represent notable industrial advances. Reports with project metrics supporting their claims are particularly sought, as well as those that show both benefits and drawbacks of the approaches used in the given project. 3) Short Papers: Short research papers, 4 pages or less using the IEEE format, on real-time analytics are also invited, and should contain enough information for the program committee to understand the scope of the project and evaluate the novelty of the problem or approach. Special Issue on Parallel and Distributed Data Mining Information Sciences, Elsevier The sheer volume of new data, which is being generated at an increasingly fast pace, has already produced an anticipated data deluge that is difficult to challenge. We are in the presence of an overwhelming vast quantity of data, owing to how easy is to produce or derive digital data. Even the storage of this massive amount of data is becoming a highly demanding task, outpacing the current development of hardware and software infrastructure. Nonetheless, this effort must be undertaken now for the preservation, organization and long-term maintenance of these precious data. However, the collected data is useless without our ability fully understand and make use of it. Therefore, we need new algorithms to address this challenge. Data mining techniques and algorithms to process huge amount of data in order to extract useful and interesting information have become popular in many different contexts. Algorithms are required to make sense of data automatically and in efficient ways. Nonetheless, even though sequential computer systems performance is improving, they are not suitable to keep up with the increase in the demand for data mining applications and the data size. Moreover, the main memory of sequential systems may not be enough to hold all the data related to current applications. This Special Issue takes into account the increasing interest in the design and implementation of parallel and distributed data mining algorithms. Parallel algorithms can easily address both the running time and memory requirement issues, by exploiting the vast aggregate main memory and processing power of processors and accelerators available on parallel computers. Anyway, parallelizing existing algorithms in order to achieve good performance and scalability with regard to massive datasets is not trivial. Indeed, it is of paramount importance a good data organization and decomposition strategy in order to balance the workload while minimizing data dependences. Another concern is related to minimizing synchronization and communication overhead. Finally, I/O costs should be minimized as well. Creating breakthrough parallel algorithms for high-performance data mining applications requires addressing several key computing problems which may lead to novel solutions and new insights in interdisciplinary applications. Moreover, increasingly the data is spread among different geographically distributed sites. Centralized processing of this data is very inefficient and expensive. In some cases, it may even be impractical and subject to security risks. Therefore, processing the data minimizing the amount of data being exchanged whilst guaranteeing at the same time correctness and efficiency is an extremely important challenge. Distributed data mining performs data analysis and mining in a fundamentally distributed manner paying careful attention to resource constraints, in particular bandwidth limitation, privacy concerns and computing power. The focus of this Special Issue is on all forms of advances in high-performance and distributed data mining algorithms and applications. The topics relevant to the Special Issue include (but are not limited to) the following. While inherently parallel, they exhibit highly variable execution performance at a local level due to unpredictable memory access patterns and/or network transfers, divergent control structures, and data imbalances. Moreover, they often require fine-grain synchronization and communication on large-data structures such as graphs, trees, unstructured grids, tables, sparse matrices, deep nets, and their combinations (such as, for example, attributed graphs). They have a significant degree of latent parallelism, which however is difficult to exploit due to their complex behavior. Current high performance architectures rely on data locality and regular computation to reduce access latencies, and often do not cope well with the requirements of these applications. Furthermore, irregular applications are difficult to scale on current supercomputing machines, due to their limits in fine-grained synchronization and small data transfers. Irregular applications pertain both to well established and emerging fields, such as machine learning, social network analysis, bioinformatics, semantic graph databases, Computer Aided Design (CAD), and computer security. Many of these application areas also process massive sets of unstructured data, which keep growing exponentially. Addressing the issues of irregular applications on current and future architectures will become critical to solve the challenges in science and data analysis of the next few years. This Ada DevRoom is once more organized in cooperation with Ada-Europe [2]. General Information ------------------- FOSDEM [3], the Free and Open source Software Developers' European Meeting, is a free and non-commercial two-day weekend event organized early each year in Brussels, Belgium. It is highly developer-oriented and brings together 8000+ participants from all over the world. No registration is necessary. The goal is to provide open source developers and communities a place to meet with other developers and projects, to be informed about the latest developments in the open source world, to attend interesting talks and presentations on various topics by open source project leaders and committers, and to promote the development and the benefits of open source solutions. Ada Programming Language and Technology --------------------------------------- Awareness of safety and security issues in software systems is increasing. Multi-core platforms are now abundant. These are some of the reasons that the Ada programming language and technology attracts more and more attention, among others due to Ada's support for programming by contract and for multi-core targets. The Ada 2012 language definition was approved and published by ISO in December 2012, updated early 2016, and work on new features for the next revision is ongoing. More and more tools are available, many are open source, including for small and recent platforms. Interest keeps increasing, also in the open source community, and many exciting projects started. Ada Developer Room ------------------ FOSDEM is an ideal fit for Ada developers to meet. On the one hand, it gives the general open source community an opportunity to see what is happening in the Ada community and how Ada technology can help to produce reliable and efficient open source software. On the other hand, it gives open source Ada projects an opportunity to present themselves, get feedback and ideas, and attract participants to their project and collaboration between projects. At previous FOSDEM events, Ada-Belgium has organized very well attended Ada Developer Rooms, offering a full day program in 2006 [4], a two-day program in 2009 [5], and full day programs in 2012 [6], 2013 [7], 2014 [8], 2015 [9], and 2016 [10]. An important goal is to present exciting Ada technology and projects also to people outside the traditional Ada community. Our proposal for another dedicated Ada DevRoom was accepted, and now work continues to prepare the detailed program. We most probably will have a total of 8 schedulable hours between 11:00 and 19:00 in a room which accommodates 76 participants. However, in order to continue a performance increase, a further evolutionary step is currently ongoing by moving away from common multicores towards innovative heterogeneous many-core architectures with deep memory hierarchies on a large scale. Such systems, equipped with a significantly higher number of cores per chip than multicores, pose challenges in both hardware and software design. On the hardware side, complex on-chip networks, scratchpads, hybrid memory cubes, non-volatile memory and stacked memory, as well as deep cache-hierarchies and novel cache-coherence strategies currently enrich the respective research areas. However, the ROME workshop focuses on the software side because without complying system software, runtime and operating system support, all these new hardware facilities cannot be exploited. Hence, the challenges in hardware/software co-design are to step beyond traditional approaches and to venture new approaches for runtime, middleware and operating system designs in order to exploit the theoretically available performance of upcoming hardware features as effectively and energy-consciously as possible. In addition, there is currently a strong trend to converge the areas of cloud and high-performance computing. Classical cloud techniques will soon be used in the area of high-performance computing and vise-versa. Projects and frameworks have already proven the benefits of OS-level virtualization for high-performance computing, whereas high-performance interconnects are able to accelerate cloud applications, too. Moreover, customized operating systems, hypervisors and unikernels are likely to leverage the efficient employment of virtualization on a broad scale. Topics ------ Authors from all related disciplines are invited to submit unpublished papers regarding their work on many-core related software research regarding operating systems and runtime environments in the area of cloud and high-performance computing. This postdoctoral grant supports excellent female computer scientists in their careers, giving them the opportunity to develop their scientific ideas without exertion of influence. It consists of a two-year tax-free research fellowship and business expenses. Fellows will be chosen based on the strength of their academic background and research credentials. Applications should include a CV, cover letter, publication list, short research plan (one page is enough), and two references. Special Issue on Parallel and Distributed Data Mining Information Sciences, Elsevier The sheer volume of new data, which is being generated at an increasingly fast pace, has already produced an anticipated data deluge that is difficult to challenge. We are in the presence of an overwhelming vast quantity of data, owing to how easy is to produce or derive digital data. Even the storage of this massive amount of data is becoming a highly demanding task, outpacing the current development of hardware and software infrastructure. Nonetheless, this effort must be undertaken now for the preservation, organization and long-term maintenance of these precious data. However, the collected data is useless without our ability fully understand and make use of it. Therefore, we need new algorithms to address this challenge. Data mining techniques and algorithms to process huge amount of data in order to extract useful and interesting information have become popular in many different contexts. Algorithms are required to make sense of data automatically and in efficient ways. Nonetheless, even though sequential computer systems performance is improving, they are not suitable to keep up with the increase in the demand for data mining applications and the data size. Moreover, the main memory of sequential systems may not be enough to hold all the data related to current applications. This Special Issue takes into account the increasing interest in the design and implementation of parallel and distributed data mining algorithms. Parallel algorithms can easily address both the running time and memory requirement issues, by exploiting the vast aggregate main memory and processing power of processors and accelerators available on parallel computers. Anyway, parallelizing existing algorithms in order to achieve good performance and scalability with regard to massive datasets is not trivial. Indeed, it is of paramount importance a good data organization and decomposition strategy in order to balance the workload while minimizing data dependences. Another concern is related to minimizing synchronization and communication overhead. Finally, I/O costs should be minimized as well. Creating breakthrough parallel algorithms for high-performance data mining applications requires addressing several key computing problems which may lead to novel solutions and new insights in interdisciplinary applications. Moreover, increasingly the data is spread among different geographically distributed sites. Centralized processing of this data is very inefficient and expensive. In some cases, it may even be impractical and subject to security risks. Therefore, processing the data minimizing the amount of data being exchanged whilst guaranteeing at the same time correctness and efficiency is an extremely important challenge. Distributed data mining performs data analysis and mining in a fundamentally distributed manner paying careful attention to resource constraints, in particular bandwidth limitation, privacy concerns and computing power. The focus of this Special Issue is on all forms of advances in high-performance and distributed data mining algorithms and applications. The topics relevant to the Special Issue include (but are not limited to) the following. Special Issue on Parallel and Distributed Data Mining Information Sciences, Elsevier The sheer volume of new data, which is being generated at an increasingly fast pace, has already produced an anticipated data deluge that is difficult to challenge. We are in the presence of an overwhelming vast quantity of data, owing to how easy is to produce or derive digital data. Even the storage of this massive amount of data is becoming a highly demanding task, outpacing the current development of hardware and software infrastructure. Nonetheless, this effort must be undertaken now for the preservation, organization and long-term maintenance of these precious data. However, the collected data is useless without our ability fully understand and make use of it. Therefore, we need new algorithms to address this challenge. Data mining techniques and algorithms to process huge amount of data in order to extract useful and interesting information have become popular in many different contexts. Algorithms are required to make sense of data automatically and in efficient ways. Nonetheless, even though sequential computer systems performance is improving, they are not suitable to keep up with the increase in the demand for data mining applications and the data size. Moreover, the main memory of sequential systems may not be enough to hold all the data related to current applications. This Special Issue takes into account the increasing interest in the design and implementation of parallel and distributed data mining algorithms. Parallel algorithms can easily address both the running time and memory requirement issues, by exploiting the vast aggregate main memory and processing power of processors and accelerators available on parallel computers. Anyway, parallelizing existing algorithms in order to achieve good performance and scalability with regard to massive datasets is not trivial. Indeed, it is of paramount importance a good data organization and decomposition strategy in order to balance the workload while minimizing data dependences. Another concern is related to minimizing synchronization and communication overhead. Finally, I/O costs should be minimized as well. Creating breakthrough parallel algorithms for high-performance data mining applications requires addressing several key computing problems which may lead to novel solutions and new insights in interdisciplinary applications. Moreover, increasingly the data is spread among different geographically distributed sites. Centralized processing of this data is very inefficient and expensive. In some cases, it may even be impractical and subject to security risks. Therefore, processing the data minimizing the amount of data being exchanged whilst guaranteeing at the same time correctness and efficiency is an extremely important challenge. Distributed data mining performs data analysis and mining in a fundamentally distributed manner paying careful attention to resource constraints, in particular bandwidth limitation, privacy concerns and computing power. The focus of this Special Issue is on all forms of advances in high-performance and distributed data mining algorithms and applications. The topics relevant to the Special Issue include (but are not limited to) the following. AIMS AND GOALS ----------------- Privacy in statistical databases is about finding tradeoffs to the tension between the increasing societal and economical demand for accurate information and the legal and ethical obligation to protect the privacy of individuals and enterprises which are the respondents providing the statistical data. In the case of statistical databases, the motivation for respondent privacy is one of survival: statistical agencies or survey institutes cannot expect to collect accurate information from individual or corporate respondents unless these feel the privacy of their responses is guaranteed. Beyond respondent privacy, there are two additional privacy dimensions to be considered: privacy for the data owners (organizations owning or gathering the data, who would not like to share the data they have collected at great expense) and privacy for the users (those who submit queries to the database and would like their analyses to stay private). Co-utility has shown to provide sustainable solutions to user privacy. We first will review our recent work on a platform for analysing social media data in terms of topics discussed, communities and their influencers. This platform has been successfully used in a number of practical use case. When using the platform we identified the creation of domain-specific taxonomies as the main bottleneck in the analysis process. To tackle this issue we developed a novel method for taxonomy induction from domain-specific document corpora. SARL aims at providing the fundamental abstractions for dealing with concurrency, distribution, interaction, decentralization, reactivity, autonomy and dynamic reconfiguration. These high-level features are now considered as the major requirements for an easy and practical implementation of modern complex software applications. We are convinced that the agent-oriented paradigm holds the keys to effectively meet this challenge. Considering the variety of existing approaches and meta-models in the field of agent-oriented engineering and more generally multi-agent systems, our approach remains as generic as possible and highly extensible to easily integrate new concepts and features. The SARL Tutorial 2018 provides introduction and explanation the modeling and implementation of multiagent systems with the SARL agent programming language. Special Issue on Parallel and Distributed Data Mining Information Sciences, Elsevier The sheer volume of new data, which is being generated at an increasingly fast pace, has already produced an anticipated data deluge that is difficult to challenge. We are in the presence of an overwhelming vast quantity of data, owing to how easy is to produce or derive digital data. Even the storage of this massive amount of data is becoming a highly demanding task, outpacing the current development of hardware and software infrastructure. Nonetheless, this effort must be undertaken now for the preservation, organization and long-term maintenance of these precious data. However, the collected data is useless without our ability fully understand and make use of it. Therefore, we need new algorithms to address this challenge. Data mining techniques and algorithms to process huge amount of data in order to extract useful and interesting information have become popular in many different contexts. Algorithms are required to make sense of data automatically and in efficient ways. Nonetheless, even though sequential computer systems performance is improving, they are not suitable to keep up with the increase in the demand for data mining applications and the data size. Moreover, the main memory of sequential systems may not be enough to hold all the data related to current applications. This Special Issue takes into account the increasing interest in the design and implementation of parallel and distributed data mining algorithms. Parallel algorithms can easily address both the running time and memory requirement issues, by exploiting the vast aggregate main memory and processing power of processors and accelerators available on parallel computers. Anyway, parallelizing existing algorithms in order to achieve good performance and scalability with regard to massive datasets is not trivial. Indeed, it is of paramount importance a good data organization and decomposition strategy in order to balance the workload while minimizing data dependences. Another concern is related to minimizing synchronization and communication overhead. Finally, I/O costs should be minimized as well. Creating breakthrough parallel algorithms for high-performance data mining applications requires addressing several key computing problems which may lead to novel solutions and new insights in interdisciplinary applications. Moreover, increasingly the data is spread among different geographically distributed sites. Centralized processing of this data is very inefficient and expensive. In some cases, it may even be impractical and subject to security risks. Therefore, processing the data minimizing the amount of data being exchanged whilst guaranteeing at the same time correctness and efficiency is an extremely important challenge. Distributed data mining performs data analysis and mining in a fundamentally distributed manner paying careful attention to resource constraints, in particular bandwidth limitation, privacy concerns and computing power. The focus of this Special Issue is on all forms of advances in high-performance and distributed data mining algorithms and applications. The topics relevant to the Special Issue include (but are not limited to) the following. Special Issue on Parallel and Distributed Data Mining Information Sciences, Elsevier The sheer volume of new data, which is being generated at an increasingly fast pace, has already produced an anticipated data deluge that is difficult to challenge. We are in the presence of an overwhelming vast quantity of data, owing to how easy is to produce or derive digital data. Even the storage of this massive amount of data is becoming a highly demanding task, outpacing the current development of hardware and software infrastructure. Nonetheless, this effort must be undertaken now for the preservation, organization and long-term maintenance of these precious data. However, the collected data is useless without our ability fully understand and make use of it. Therefore, we need new algorithms to address this challenge. Data mining techniques and algorithms to process huge amount of data in order to extract useful and interesting information have become popular in many different contexts. Algorithms are required to make sense of data automatically and in efficient ways. Nonetheless, even though sequential computer systems performance is improving, they are not suitable to keep up with the increase in the demand for data mining applications and the data size. Moreover, the main memory of sequential systems may not be enough to hold all the data related to current applications. This Special Issue takes into account the increasing interest in the design and implementation of parallel and distributed data mining algorithms. Parallel algorithms can easily address both the running time and memory requirement issues, by exploiting the vast aggregate main memory and processing power of processors and accelerators available on parallel computers. Anyway, parallelizing existing algorithms in order to achieve good performance and scalability with regard to massive datasets is not trivial. Indeed, it is of paramount importance a good data organization and decomposition strategy in order to balance the workload while minimizing data dependences. Another concern is related to minimizing synchronization and communication overhead. Finally, I/O costs should be minimized as well. Creating breakthrough parallel algorithms for high-performance data mining applications requires addressing several key computing problems which may lead to novel solutions and new insights in interdisciplinary applications. Moreover, increasingly the data is spread among different geographically distributed sites. Centralized processing of this data is very inefficient and expensive. In some cases, it may even be impractical and subject to security risks. Therefore, processing the data minimizing the amount of data being exchanged whilst guaranteeing at the same time correctness and efficiency is an extremely important challenge. Distributed data mining performs data analysis and mining in a fundamentally distributed manner paying careful attention to resource constraints, in particular bandwidth limitation, privacy concerns and computing power. The focus of this Special Issue is on all forms of advances in high-performance and distributed data mining algorithms and applications. The topics relevant to the Special Issue include (but are not limited to) the following. Existing research in social media data mining has focused on techniques for extracting information for specific applications from separate social media sources. The mobile network and the Internet of Things are transforming what is means to be social online. Humans, everyday objects and smart devices interact and form an intelligent social network that is a highly adaptive complex system. Assisted by personal devices, people can access real-time traffic, weather and news event information and exchange such information through social interaction and form communities dynamically. The rich user- and device-generated data and user interactions generate complex social big data that is different from classical structured attribute-value data. The data objects take various forms including unstructured text, geo-tagged data objects and data object streams. The social networks formed from interactions among data objects also carry rich information for analyzing user behavior. Such complex social big data calls for cross disciplinary research from data mining, machine learning, pervasive and ubiquitous computing, network science, and computational social science. We seek contributions to advance our knowledge in social big data mining and analytics and extend the knowledge to related disciplines. We especially welcome methodological papers that address the data complexity and application papers that promote wider and deeper applications of social media data. This opens new research opportunities for business process data analysis, mining and modeling. The aim of the IFIP 2.6 International Symposium on Data-Driven Process Discovery and Analysis is to offer a forum where researchers from different communities and the industry can share their insight in this hot new field. The symposium will bring together leading researchers, engineers and scientists from around the world. Full papers must not exceed 15 pages. Short papers are limited to at most 4 pages. A special session (with a specific review process) will be dedicated to discuss research plan from PhD students. Papers are pre-circulated to the authors that will be expected to read all papers in advance but to avoid exceptional overhead, two are assigned to be prepared with particular care, making ready comments and suggestions. The bulk of the time during each session will be dedicated to open conversations about all of the papers in a given session, along with any linkages to the papers and discussions within an earlier session. The closing session (30 minutes), will include a panel about open challenges during which every participant will be asked to assemble their thoughts/project ideas/goals/etc that they got out of the workshop. ### Call for PhD Research Plans The SIMPDA PhD Seminar is a workshop for Ph.D. students from all over the world. The goal of the Seminar is to help students with their thesis and research plans by providing feedback and general advice on how to use their research results. Students interested in participating in the Seminar should submit an extended abstract describing their research. Submissions can relate to any aspect of Process Data: technical advances, usage and impact studies, policy analyses, social and institutional implications, theoretical contributions, interaction and design advances, innovative applications, and social implications. Research plans should be at most of 5 page long and should be organised following the following structure: - Abstract: summarises, in 5 line, the research aims and significance. - Research Question: defines what will be accomplished by eliciting the relevant the research questions. - Background: defines the background knowledge providing the 5 most relevant references (papers or books). - Significance: explains the relevance of the general topic and of the specific contribution. - Research design and methods: describes and motivates the method adopted focusing on: assumptions, solutions, data sources, validation of results, limitations of the approach. - Research stage: describes what the student has done so far. ### SIMPDA PhD award A doctoral award will be given by the SIMPDA PhD Jury to the best research plan submitted. We first will review our recent work on a platform for analysing social media data in terms of topics discussed, communities and their influencers. This platform has been successfully used in a number of practical use case. When using the platform we identified the creation of domain-specific taxonomies as the main bottleneck in the analysis process. To tackle this issue we developed a novel method for taxonomy induction from domain-specific document corpora. As scientific applications become more data intensive, the management of data resources and data flow between the storage and compute resources is becoming the main bottleneck. Analyzing, visualizing, and disseminating these large data sets has become a major challenge and data intensive computing is now considered as the “fourth paradigm” in scientific discovery after theoretical, experimental, and computational science. The eighth international workshop on Data-intensive Computing in the Clouds (DataCloud 2017) will provide the scientific community a dedicated forum for discussing new research, development, and deployment efforts in running data-intensive computing workloads on Cloud Computing infrastructures. The DataCloud 2017 workshop will focus on the use of cloud-based technologies to meet the new data intensive scientific challenges that are not well served by the current supercomputers, grids or compute-intensive clouds. No matter if we want to reduce the amount of needed resources to perform a task or maximize the output of some process, so often the difficulty of making the right decisions can be rephrased as some kind of optimisation problems. Unfortunately, for many optimisation problems finding the optimal solution is not feasible in general due to the hardness of the problem —moreover, for some of them we cannot even guarantee any constant ratio between the quality of the optimal solution and the quality of any solution found in reasonable time. Despite these disheartening theoretical limits, optimisation problems appear whenever there is a sophisticated system, so we do have to face them by some means —necessarily non-exhaustive methods. Some of these methods are specific to the problem under consideration, whereas others are adaptations of general optimization heuristics (metaheuristics) to the studied problem. Typically, the latter search for solutions similar to the most promising observed ones, or their combinations, for example by making some simple entities interact with each other according to simple rules and collaboratively construct new solutions. Within this category we can find evolutionary computation methods and swarm optimization methods, which are sometimes inspired by some natural process. Regardless of the method selected to tackle a hard optimization problem, the difficulty of the problem and the performance of the best known heuristics for the problem may have a high impact on the application field the problem belongs to, since the difficulty of a scientific or engineering process can be, to some extent, due to the computational difficulty of the underlying optimization problem it implicitly poses. Special Issue on Parallel and Distributed Data Mining Information Sciences, Elsevier The sheer volume of new data, which is being generated at an increasingly fast pace, has already produced an anticipated data deluge that is difficult to challenge. We are in the presence of an overwhelming vast quantity of data, owing to how easy is to produce or derive digital data. Even the storage of this massive amount of data is becoming a highly demanding task, outpacing the current development of hardware and software infrastructure. Nonetheless, this effort must be undertaken now for the preservation, organization and long-term maintenance of these precious data. However, the collected data is useless without our ability fully understand and make use of it. Therefore, we need new algorithms to address this challenge. Data mining techniques and algorithms to process huge amount of data in order to extract useful and interesting information have become popular in many different contexts. Algorithms are required to make sense of data automatically and in efficient ways. Nonetheless, even though sequential computer systems performance is improving, they are not suitable to keep up with the increase in the demand for data mining applications and the data size. Moreover, the main memory of sequential systems may not be enough to hold all the data related to current applications. This Special Issue takes into account the increasing interest in the design and implementation of parallel and distributed data mining algorithms. Parallel algorithms can easily address both the running time and memory requirement issues, by exploiting the vast aggregate main memory and processing power of processors and accelerators available on parallel computers. Anyway, parallelizing existing algorithms in order to achieve good performance and scalability with regard to massive datasets is not trivial. Indeed, it is of paramount importance a good data organization and decomposition strategy in order to balance the workload while minimizing data dependences. Another concern is related to minimizing synchronization and communication overhead. Finally, I/O costs should be minimized as well. Creating breakthrough parallel algorithms for high-performance data mining applications requires addressing several key computing problems which may lead to novel solutions and new insights in interdisciplinary applications. Moreover, increasingly the data is spread among different geographically distributed sites. Centralized processing of this data is very inefficient and expensive. In some cases, it may even be impractical and subject to security risks. Therefore, processing the data minimizing the amount of data being exchanged whilst guaranteeing at the same time correctness and efficiency is an extremely important challenge. Distributed data mining performs data analysis and mining in a fundamentally distributed manner paying careful attention to resource constraints, in particular bandwidth limitation, privacy concerns and computing power. The focus of this Special Issue is on all forms of advances in high-performance and distributed data mining algorithms and applications. The topics relevant to the Special Issue include (but are not limited to) the following. Around 10-15 papers will be selected for publication after a second round of review. ### Topics Topics of interest for submission include, but are not limited to: - Business Process Modeling languages, notations and methods - Lightweight Process Model - Data-aware and data-centric approaches - Process Mining with Big Data - Variability and configuration of process models - Process simulation and static analyses - Process data query languages - Process data mining - Privacy-aware process data mining - Process metadata and semantic reasoning - Process patterns and standards - Foundations of business process models - Resource management in business process execution - Process tracing and monitoring - Process change management and evolution - Business process lifecycle - Case studies and experience reports - Social process discovery - Crowdsourced process definition and discovery ### Workshop Format: In accordance to our historical tradition of proposing SIMPDA as a symposium, we propose an innovative format for this workshop: The number of sessions depend on the number of submissions but, considering the previous editions, we envisage to have four sessions, with 4-5 related papers assigned to each session. A special session (with a specific review process) will be dedicated to discuss research plan from PhD students. Papers are pre-circulated to the authors that will be expected to read all papers in advance but to avoid exceptional overhead, two are assigned to be prepared with particular care, making ready comments and suggestions. The bulk of the time during each session will be dedicated to open conversations about all of the papers in a given session, along with any linkages to the papers and discussions within an earlier session. The closing session (30 minutes), will include a panel about open challenges during which every participant will be asked to assemble their thoughts/project ideas/goals/etc that they got out of the workshop. ### Call for PhD Research Plans The SIMPDA PhD Seminar is a workshop for Ph.D. students from all over the world. The goal of the Seminar is to help students with their thesis and research plans by providing feedback and general advice on how to use their research results. Students interested in participating in the Seminar should submit an extended abstract describing their research. Submissions can relate to any aspect of Process Data: technical advances, usage and impact studies, policy analyses, social and institutional implications, theoretical contributions, interaction and design advances, innovative applications, and social implications. Research plans should be at most of 5 page long and should be organised following the following structure: - Abstract: summarises, in 5 line, the research aims and significance. - Research Question: defines what will be accomplished by eliciting the relevant the research questions. - Background: defines the background knowledge providing the 5 most relevant references (papers or books). - Significance: explains the relevance of the general topic and of the specific contribution. - Research design and methods: describes and motivates the method adopted focusing on: assumptions, solutions, data sources, validation of results, limitations of the approach. - Research stage: describes what the student has done so far. ### SIMPDA PhD award A doctoral award will be given by the SIMPDA PhD Jury to the best research plan submitted. Demonstration proposals should consist of a title, an extended abstract, and contact information for the authors, and should not exceed 10 pages. Posters allow the presentation of late-breaking results in an informal, interactive manner. Poster proposals should consist of a title, an extended abstract, contact information for the authors, and should not exceed 2 pages. Accepted demonstrations and posters will be presented at the symposium. We first will review our recent work on a platform for analysing social media data in terms of topics discussed, communities and their influencers. This platform has been successfully used in a number of practical use case. When using the platform we identified the creation of domain-specific taxonomies as the main bottleneck in the analysis process. To tackle this issue we developed a novel method for taxonomy induction from domain-specific document corpora. FPGAs can tailor the hardware to the application, avoiding overheads and achieving higher hardware efficiency than general-purpose architectures. Leading FPGA manufacturers have recently made a concerted effort to provide a range of higher-level, easier to use high-level programming models for FPGAs. Such initiatives are already stimulating new interest within the HPC community around the potential advantages of FPGAs over other architectures. With this in mind, this workshop, now in its third year, brings together HPC and heterogeneous-computing researchers to demonstrate and share experiences on legacy and new high-level programming models, optimizations specific to scientific computing and data analytics, tools for performance/energy improvements, FPGA computing in the cloud, and popular applications for reconfigurable computing such as machine learning and big data. ========================================================================== Submissions (one page extended abstract): Submissions are solicited that explore the state of the art in the use of FPGAs in heterogeneous high-performance computing architectures and, at a system level, in data centers and supercomputers. FPGAs may be considered from either or both the distributed, parallel and composable fabric of compute elements or from their dynamic reconfigurability. We particularly encourage submissions which focus on the mapping of algorithms and applications to heterogeneous FPGA-based systems as well as the overall impact of such architectures on the compute capacity, cost, power efficiency, and overall computational capabilities of data centers and supercomputers. Submissions may report on theoretical or applied research, implementation case studies, benchmarks, standards, or any other area that promises to make a significant contribution to our understanding of heterogeneous high-performance reconfigurable computing and will help to shape future research and implementations in this domain. A non-comprehensive list of potential topics of interest is given below: 1. The Society for the Study of Artificial Intelligence and Simulation for Behaviour (AISB) is soliciting proposals for symposia to be held at the AISB 2018 convention. The longest running convention on Artificial Intelligence, AISB 2018 will be held at the University of Liverpool, chaired by Floriana Grasso and Louise Dennis. As in the past years, AISB 2018 will provide a unique forum for presenting cutting edge research and burning issues around all areas of AI. The theme for this year is "AI for the Digital Society". Convention Format The convention will consist of parallel symposia, and will run from April 4th to April 6th 2018. Symposia will typically span half a day or one day; where the number of high quality submissions is high, a symposium will last more than one day. Dear Colleague, I am deeply pathetic to share the sad news that Prof. Lotfi A. Zadeh has passed away on Sept. 6, 2017 in age of 97. Prof. Zadeh has been our Honorary Chair for the IEEE ICCI*CC Series since 2002. His vision has guided us to build the Cognitive Informatics and Cognitive Computing Community and related research in the last 16 years. Prof. Zadeh was a giant scientist of the world. His seminal work in logic, fuzzy mathematics, and soft computing, etc., have and will influence many generations of researchers and students. We will remember his pioneer contributions to knowledge forever. As Stuart Rubin wrote: "I would like to share some words, which I believe he would have shared with you, if I may: 'Though I am bodily gone, I will continue on in your hearts and sole - more fuzzy now than ever so long as you remember me and my work.'
