WPDM 2019 The Third International Workshop on Parallel and Distributed Data Mining (WPDM 2019) http://sara.unisalento.it/~cafaro/WPDM2019/ CALL FOR PAPERS The Third Workshop on Parallel and Distributed Data Mining (WPDM 2019) will be held in conjunction with The 19th International Conference on Computational Science and Its Applications (ICCSA 2019), http://www.iccsa.org Saint Petersburg University, Saint Petersburg, Russia July 1-4 2019 Final submission Deadline: February 17, 2019 SCOPE AND OBJECTIVES The Workshop on Parallel and Distributed Data Mining is an international forum which brings together researchers and practitioners working on different high-performance aspects of data mining algorithms, enabling novel applications. Data mining techniques and algorithms to process huge amount of data in order to extract useful and interesting information have become popular in many different contexts. Algorithms are required to make sense of data automatically and in efficient ways. Nonetheless, even though sequential computer systems performance is improving, they are not suitable to keep up with the increase in the demand for data mining applications and the data size. Moreover, the main memory of sequential systems may not be enough to hold all the data related to current applications. Therefore, there is an increasing interest in the design and implementation of parallel data mining algorithms. On parallel computers, by exploiting the vast aggregate main memory and processing power of processors and accelerators, parallel algorithms can easily address both the running time and memory requirement issues. Anyway, parallelizing existing algorithms in order to achieve good performance and scalability with regard to massive datasets is not trivial. Indeed, it is of paramount importance a good data organization and decomposition strategy in order to balance the workload while minimizing data dependences. Another concern is related to minimizing synchronization and communication overhead. Finally, I/O costs should be minimized as well. The Workshop will allow exchanging ideas and results related to on-going research, focusing on high-performance aspects of data mining algorithms and applications. Creating breakthrough parallel algorithms for high-performance data mining applications requires addressing several key computing problems which may lead to novel solutions and new insights in interdisciplinary applications. The focus of the workshop is on all forms of advances in high-performance data mining algorithms and applications, and related topics. The WPDM Workshop topics include (but are not limited to) the following: - Parallel data mining algorithms using MPI and/or OpenMP - Parallel data mining algorithms targeting GPUs and many-cores accelerators - Parallel data mining applications exploiting FPGA - Distributed data mining algorithms - Benchmarking and performance studies of high-performance data mining applications - Novel programming paradigms to support high-performance computing for data mining - Performance models for high-performance data mining applications and middleware - Programming models, tools, and environments for high-performance computing in data mining - Caching, streaming, pipelining, and other optimization techniques for data management in high-performance computing for data mining INSTRUCTIONS FOR PAPER SUBMISSIONS You are invited to submit original and unpublished research works on above topics. Submitted papers must not have been published or simultaneously submitted elsewhere. Call for Papers Workshop on Data Mining for Fake news in Social Media: Propagation, Detection, and Mitigation (FEND'19), in conjunction with SDM'19 http://pike.psu.edu/fend19/ May 2-4, 2019, Alberta, Canada Social media has become a popular means to consume news. However, the quality of news on social media is lower than traditional news organizations. Because it is cheap to provide news online and much faster and easier to disseminate through social media, large volumes of fake news, i.e., those news articles with intentionally false information, are produced online for a variety of purposes, such as financial and political gain. The extensive spread of fake news can have severe negative impacts on individuals and society. First, fake news can break the authenticity balance of the news ecosystem. For example, it is evident that the most popular fake news was even more widely spread on Facebook than the most popular authentic mainstream news during the U.S. 2016 presidential election. Second, fake news intentionally persuades consumers to accept biased or false beliefs for political or financial gain. For example, in 2013, $130 billion in stock value was wiped out in a matter of minutes following an Associated Press (AP) tweet about an explosion that injured Barack Obama. AP said its Twitter account was hacked. Third, fake news changes the way people interpret and respond to real news, impeding their abilities to differentiate what is true from what is not. Therefore, itâ€™s critical to understand how fake news propagate, developing data mining techniques for efficient and accurate fake news detection and intervene in the propagation of fake news to mitigate the negative effects. The objectives of this workshop are: - Bring together researchers from both academia and industry as well as practitioners to present their latest problems and ideas; - Attract social media providers who have access to interesting sources of fake news datasets and problems but lack the expertise in data mining to use data effectively; - Enhance interactions between data mining, text mining, social media mining, and sociology and psychology communities working on problems of fake news propagation, detection, and mitigation. This workshop aims to bring together researchers, practitioners and social media providers for understanding fake news propagation, improving fake news detection in social media and mitigation. This Ada DevRoom is once more organized in cooperation with Ada-Europe [2]. General Information ------------------- FOSDEM [3], the Free and Open source Software Developers' European Meeting, is a free and non-commercial two-day weekend event organized early each year in Brussels, Belgium. It is highly developer-oriented and brings together 8000+ participants from all over the world. No registration is necessary. The goal is to provide open source developers and communities a place to meet with other developers and projects, to be informed about the latest developments in the open source world, to attend interesting talks and presentations on various topics by open source project leaders and committers, and to promote the development and the benefits of open source solutions. Ada Programming Language and Technology --------------------------------------- Awareness of safety and security issues in software systems is increasing. Multi-core platforms are now abundant. These are some of the reasons that the Ada programming language and technology attracts more and more attention, among others due to Ada's support for programming by contract and for multi-core targets. The latest Ada language definition was updated early 2016. Work on new features is ongoing, such as improved support for fine-grained parallelism, and will result in a new Ada standard scheduled for 2020. Ada-related technology such as SPARK provides a solution for the safety and security aspects stated above. More and more tools are available, many are open source, including for small and recent platforms. Interest in Ada keeps increasing, also in the open source community, and many exciting projects have been started. Ada Developer Room ------------------ FOSDEM is an ideal fit for an Ada Developer Room. On the one hand, it gives the general open source community an opportunity to see what is happening in the Ada community and how Ada technology can help to produce reliable and efficient open source software. On the other hand, it gives open source Ada projects an opportunity to present themselves, get feedback and ideas, and attract participants to their project and collaboration between projects. At previous FOSDEM events, the Ada-Belgium non-profit organization organized very well attended Ada Developer Rooms, offering a full day program in 2006 [4], a two-day program in 2009 [5], and full day programs in 2012 [6], 2013 [7], 2014 [8], 2015 [9], 2016 [10], and 2018 [11]. An important goal is to present exciting Ada technology and projects also to people outside the traditional Ada community. Our proposal for another dedicated Ada DevRoom was accepted, and now work continues to prepare the detailed program. We most probably will have a total of 8 schedulable hours between 11:00 and 19:00 in one of the rooms which accommodate from 59 to 85 participants. More information will be posted on the dedicated web-page on the Ada-Belgium site [12], and final announcements will of course also be sent to various forums, lists and newsgroups. Call for Presentations ---------------------- We would like to schedule technical presentations, tutorials, demos, live performances, project status reports, discussions, etc, in the Ada Developer Room. Note that all talks will be streamed live (audio+video) and recorded, for remote as well as later viewing of talks, and so that people can watch streams in the hallways when rooms are full. Postdoctoral Research Associate in Micromagnetic Modelling School of GeoSciences, The University of Edinburgh Grade 7 Salary £33,199 to £39,609 Applications are invited for a 30 month post-doctoral research associate (PDRA) with extensive computational experience to join the mineral magnetism group at the School of GeoSciences, The University of Edinburgh. The position is funded by the Natural Environmental Research Council award “Determining ancient magnetic field strengths from the Earth and Solar System”, which is a collaborative project between Prof Wyn Williams (Edinburgh Univ.), Dr. Adrian Muxworthy (Imperial College), and Prof. John Tarduno (Univ. Rochester). The aim of the project is to better understand the magnetic recording fidelity of ‘non-ideal’ magnetic domain states and their ability to hold accurate recordings over periods of billions of years. Using the finite-element micromagnetic modelling software MERRILL (www.rockmag.org<http://www.rockmag.org>) you will develop detailed models of magnetic recording characteristics of particles of iron oxides and sulphides. These models will be compiled into a relational data-base and used to simulate ‘whole-sample’ magnetic recording properties of standard and single crystal paleomagnetic samples. The numerical models will be validated using high-resolution magnetic, mineralogical and tomographic experimental observations from project partners at Imperial College and University of Rochester. You will have a PhD (or near completion) in a physical or computational science with extensive experience of numerical modelling, preferably finite-element modelling and ideally micromagnetic modelling. You should have knowledge of FORTRAN and Python or similar. Experience in parallel programming and database management would be useful but not essential. You should also have a track-record of publishing peer-reviewed research articles in international journals and demonstrate enthusiasm to contribute to the aims of the overall project as part of a wider team. You will also have excellent communication, planning, and team working skills. The position is open from January 2019 with a latest possible start date of April 2019. IEEE International Conference on Decentralized Applications and Infrastructures (DAPPCON 2019) https://dappcon.net The objective of the 2019 IEEE International Conference on Decentralized Applications and Infrastructures (DAPPCON 2019) is to facilitate the exchange between researchers and practitioners in the area of Decentralized Applications based on Distributed Ledger Technologies, Blockchain, and related technologies. It can be already seen today that Blockchain is making a huge impact on the way digital payments are made. However, the potential implications of Blockchain technologies go far beyond their application as the technological backbone for cryptocurrencies. In recent years, Decentralized Applications (dApps) have emerged as a new model for building massively scalable services. dApps allow for various novel application scenarios, which are built upon distributed consensus and thus are hard to block or censor. While Blockchains such as Bitcoin or Ethereum are based on compute-intense consensus mechanisms, more recent approaches focus on voting- or staking-based algorithms that support higher transactions per second and are also better-suited to reflect proportions of majority ownership, which are required in many enterprise application scenarios. Also, the integration of Smart Contracts into Blockchains, for example, based on Ethereum or Hyperledger, leads to a plethora of possible use cases for dApps. DAPPCON 2019 will provide a high-quality forum for participants from research and industry. Both full and short papers can be submitted. All papers must be written in English. Manuscripts must include a title, an abstract with 200-250 words, and a list of 4-6 keywords. Each full paper is limited to 10 pages, including tables, figures, and references. Each short paper is limited to 6 pages, including tables, figures and references. A substantial amount of this user-generated data is in form of text such as reviews, tweets, and blogs that provide numerous challenges as well as opportunities to NLP (Natural Language Processing) researchers for discovering meaningful information used in various applications. Sentiment analysis is the study that analyses people's opinion and sentiment towards entities such as products, services, person, organisations etc. present in the text. Sentiment analysis and opinion mining is the most popular and interesting research problem. In recent years, Deep Learning approaches have emerged as powerful computational models and have shown significant success to deal with a massive amount of data in unsupervised settings. Deep learning is revolutionizing because it offers an effective way of learning representation and allows the system to learn features automatically from data without the need of explicitly designing them. Deep learning algorithms such as deep autoencoders, convolutional and recurrent neural networks (CNN) (RNN), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) have reported providing significantly improved results in various natural language processing tasks including sentiment analysis. The Workshop on Parallel and Distributed Data Mining (WPDM 2018) is an international forum that brings together researchers and practitioners, working on different high-performance aspects of data mining algorithms, enabling novel applications. Indeed, datasets grow so rapidly that, every day, exabytes of data are being generated, and, in order to extract and infer useful knowledge, parallel processing techniques are required to cope with this huge volume of data: Traditional sequential software is not viable to cope with them. Smart computing is based on the synergistic combination of advances in Sensor-based technologies, the Internet of Things (IoT), Cyber-Physical Systems, Edge computing, Big Data analytics, Machine Learning, Cognitive Computing, and Artificial Intelligence. Smart computing is a multidisciplinary domain. Applications of smart computing can be found in different societal domains including, but not limited to, transportation, energy, environmental protection, smart and connected communities, healthcare, banking, entertainment, and social media. Algorithmic and system advancements of cloud computing, mobile/pervasive computing, cyber-physical systems, sensor networking and social computing are taking smart computing to a new dimension and improving our ways of living. SMARTCOMP 2019 is the 5th edition of the conference and will held in Washington, USA and will include smart computing innovations pertaining to pervasive/ubiquitous computing, cloud computing, sensor networks, internet of things, big data analytics, security and privacy, social computing, cognitive computing, cyber-physical systems and their application and validation within smart computing environments. This includes applications such as smart buildings, smart cities, smart grids, precision agriculture and other innovations contributing to smart living. Submission Guidelines Paper submissions must be no longer than 8 pages and formatted according to the two-column IEEE proceedings template. IEEE provides corresponding formatting templates at IEEE conference template. Make sure to use the conference mode of the template, i.e., LaTeX users must use the conference option of the IEEEtran document class. Papers must be submitted electronically as a single PDF file on US Letter size paper (not A4), with all fonts embedded (the PDF-A standard complies with that). Prior to submission, ensure that any running headers/footers, page numbering, as well as blue underlining for URLs and email addresses has been removed. All submitted papers will be subject to peer reviews by Technical Program Committee members and other experts in the field. Description =========== Research on Agents and Multi-Agent Systems has matured during the last decade and many effective applications of this technology are now deployed. SARL-18 provides an international forum to present and discuss the latest scientific developments and their effective applications, to assess the impact of the approach, and to facilitate technology transfer. SARL workshop borns with the SARL agent programming language, but the scientific results presented in SARL-19 are not restricted to SARL; other languages and agent platforms may be presented. SARL aims at providing the fundamental abstractions for dealing with concurrency, distribution, interaction, decentralization, reactivity, autonomy and dynamic reconfiguration. These high-level features are now considered as the major requirements for an easy and practical implementation of modern complex software applications. We are convinced that the agent-oriented paradigm holds the keys to effectively meet this challenge. Considering the variety of existing approaches and meta-models in the field of agent-oriented engineering and more generally multi-agent systems, our approach remains as generic as possible and highly extensible to easily integrate new concepts and features. The goal of SARL-19 is to provides a place where the different points of view on the modeling and the simulation with agent platforms and agent programming languages may be discussed. Special Session "Bio-inspired computing approaches" at IWINAC 2019 (8th International Work-Conference on the Interplay between Natural and Artificial Computation), Almeria (Spain), 3-7 June, 2019 http://www.iwinac.uned.es/iwinac2019/ Overview: Bio-inspired computing methods take inspiration from nature to develop optimization and search algorithms or metaheuristics, typically in order to tackle the search of optimal solutions of complex problems in science and engineering, which usually imply a high dimensionality of the search space. Apart from the traditional evolutionary computing methods, artificial immune systems, ant algorithms or particle swarm optimization, the session is intended to focus on new bio-inspired solutions such as swarm algorithm solutions based on bee colonies, algorithms based on firefly insect behavior, artificial algae algorithm and many more, together with their combination with local search strategies or other metaheuristics. The researchers in this field must be self-critical with the boom of such new solutions, contrasting what is new and what is included in other traditional search algorithms or what novelty is provided in a new bio-inspired metaheuristic. Besides, the proposals should be competitive with other methods in the state of the art. The aim is that the session provides a meeting point for IWINAC attendees and researchers who have a current or developing interest in bio-inspired approaches and their applications. CALL FOR WORKSHOP PROPOSALS 4th IEEE European Symposium on Security and Privacy Stockholm, Sweden -- June 17-19, 2019 https://www.ieee-security.org/TC/EuroSP2019/ Since 1980, the IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy has been the premier forum for presenting developments in computer security and electronic privacy, and for bringing together researchers and practitioners in the field. Following this story of success, IEEE initiated the European Symposium on Security and Privacy (EuroS&P), which is organized every year in a European city. The 4th EuroS&P edition will be held on June 17-19, 2019 in Stockholm, at the KTH main campus. Pre conference workshops will take place on Sunday, June 16, 2019, and post conference workshops on Thursday, June 20, 2019. A workshop associated with IEEE EuroS&P can be a full or half day in length. Each workshop should provide a forum to address a specific topic at the forefront of security and privacy research. Submissions of workshop proposals must reach the workshop chairs by November 11, 2018. If proceedings are planned, the default option offered is publication through IEEE Xplore in a volume accompanying the main IEEE EuroS&P 2019 proceedings. Workshop registration will be done together with the main conference, allowing workshop-only registrations as well. Support for accepted workshops include: rooms, coffee breaks, lunches, and at least two free registrations for the full EuroS&P 2019 program. Other expenses must be covered by the individual workshops. Dear Colleagues, As a part of a newly funded project, Grover, Chamanzar, Kainerstorfer, Barth, and Gittis labs at Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburgh, PA, USA) are actively looking for joint postdocs and technicians for slice electrophysiology experiments. Our team's goal is to develop novel methods for neural stimulation and recording in somatosensory and motor cortex for closed-loop experiments in rodents and in future in non-human primates. We aim to establish advanced theoretical techniques, closely with experimental validation, for invasive and noninvasive high-throughput neurostimulation, and recording with high spatiotemporal resolution for advancing diagnosis treatment of disorders such as epilepsy, Parkinson's, and brain injuries, as well as fundamental understanding of the brain. This is an ideal opportunity for a neuroscientist or a biomedical engineer who wants to be involved in developing next generation neural interfacing techniques and use these advanced methods for fundamental and applied neuroscience studies. The role of the technician is to perform surgeries and prepare brain slices and help with the experiments. The technician is expected to directly work with students and postdocs to design and conduct experiments. The postdoc will be affiliated with the Carnegie Mellon Neuroscience Institute, and will get the opportunity to work with a team of accomplished researchers from various disciplines ranging from Biological Sciences, ECE, BME at CMU as well as clinicians at University of Pittsburgh. This is an opportunity to work on a challenging scientific problem in a highly interdisciplinary and vibrant environment. *Requirements*: Prior experience with rodent surgeries, particularly mice. Interest in or experience with brain slice preparation and experiments. Experience with patch clamp recording and electrophysiology or voltage imaging in neurons is essential. The labs are committed to the professional development of the members, making this position a valuable preparation for those interested in academic, industrial or entrepreneurial careers. The position has no mandatory teaching or administrative duties. The ideal start date is as soon as possible (11/2018 or shortly thereafter), but application review will continue until the positions are filled. Although medical instruments have benefited a great deal from the technological advances of the couple of decades, the impact of integrating IT advancements in addressing critical problems in biomedical research remains limited and the process of penetrating IT tools in the medical profession continues to be a very challenging problem. For example, the use of electronic medical records and Hospital Information Systems in improving health care remains fragmented. Similarly, the use of advanced computational tools seamlessly in the biomedical research cycle continues to be minimal. Due to the computational intensive problems in life sciences, the marriage between the Bioinformatics domain and high performance computing is critical to the advancement of Biosciences. In addition, the problems in this domain tend to be highly parallelizable and deal with large datasets, hence using HPC is a natural fit. The Bioinformatics domain is rich in applications that require extracting useful information from very large and continuously growing sequence of databases. Most methods used for analyzing DNA/Protein sequences are known to be computationally intensive, providing motivation for the use of powerful computational systems with high throughput characteristics. Moreover, high-throughput wet lab platforms such as next generation sequencing, microarray and mass spectrometry, are producing a huge amount of experimental "omics" data. The increasing availability of omics data poses new challenges to bioinformatics applications that need to face in a semi-automatic way an overwhelming availability of raw data. Main challenges regard: 1) the efficient storage, retrieval and integration of experimental data; 2) their efficient and high-throughput preprocessing and analysis; 3) the building of reproducible "in silico" experiments; 4) the integration of analysis results with pre-existing knowledge usually stored into ontologies. As the storage, preprocessing and analysis of raw experimental data is becoming the main bottleneck of the analysis pipeline, parallel computing is playing an important role in all steps of the life sciences research pipeline, from raw data management and processing, to data integration and analysis, and to data exploration and visualization. Moreover, Cloud Computing is becoming the key technology to hide the complexity of computing infrastructures, to reduce the cost of the data analysis task, and especially to change the overall business model of biomedical research and health provision. Considering the complex analysis pipeline of the biomedical research, the bottleneck is more and more moving toward the storage, integration, and analysis of experimental data, as well as their correlation and integration with publicly available data banks In such a scenario, large-scale distributed databases and parallel bioinformatics tools are key tools for organizing and exploring biological and biomedical data with the aim to discover new knowledge in biology and medicine. In the current Information age, further progress of Medical Sciences requires successful integration with Computational and Information Sciences. The workshop attempts to attract innovative ways of how such integration can be achieved via Bioinformatics and Biomedical Informatics research, particularly in taking advantage of the new advancements in HPC systems. The focus of data analysis and data mining tools in biomedical research highlights the current state of research in the key biomedical research areas such as bioinformatics, medical informatics and biomedical imaging. Addressing performance concerns in managing and accessing medical data, while facilitating the ability to integrate and correlate different biomedical databases remains an outstanding problem in biomedical research. The amount of available biomedical data continues to grow in an exponential rate; however, the impact of utilizing such resources remains minimal. The development of innovative tools in HPC environments to integrate, analyze and mine such data sources is a key step towards achieving large impact levels. The workshop focuses on topics related to the utilization of HPC systems and new models of parallel computing and cloud computing in problems related to Biomedical Informatics and Life Sciences, along with the use of data integration and data mining tools to support biomedical research and Health Care.
