The Department of Computer Science of Hong Kong Baptist University, presently offers BSc, MSc, MPhil, and PhD programmes, now seeks outstanding applicants for the following faculty positions on tenure-track. The appointees are expected to perform high-impact research; to teach and manage programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as well as to contribute to professional and institutional services. Collaboration with other faculty members in research and teaching is also expected. They will be encouraged to collaborate with colleagues within the Department to contribute to two special thematic applications including (a) health informatics and (b) secure and privacy-aware computing, and/or outside the Department to contribute to interdisciplinary research projects under our University’s Research Cluster on Data Analytics and A.I. in X. Applicants should possess a PhD degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field, and sufficiently demonstrate abilities to conduct high-quality research in one of the Department’s key research areas: (i) computational intelligence, (ii) databases and information management, (iii) networking and systems, and (iv) pattern recognition and machine learning. Applicants should also demonstrate strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in computer science and/or information systems, possess track record of innovative research and high-impact publications, and demonstrate the ability to bid for and pursue externally-funded research programmes. McAfee report on malware threats shows that over four quarters of 2017 there were identified 690 millions of malware samples, which is an extreme number considering amount of manual work required to process even a tiny fraction of those. Many malware analysis across different security organizations spent hours trying to analyze and understand functionality of malware. At the same time overwhelming amount of malicious threats and malware forms cause considerable delays from the time malware has been discovered to the time a corresponding efficient signature was created. Moreover, the malware infection is no longer limited to personal computers, but now also hits such components as Internet of Things and Industrial Control Systems, which were previously unaffected and the cybersecirty impact was underestimated. >From before Machine Learning and Computational Intelligence have demonstrated advantages of application in cybersecurity-related tasks. In particular, many researchers have been employing such techniques to mitigate obfuscation, polymorphous and encryption while building intelligent malware detection mechanisms. Intelligent malware analysis and detection is an emerging topic of cybersecurity that has to go in line with advancement of malware developers and consistent presence of zero-day attacks. Our focus is not only to build and effective Machine Learning-based malware protection, but also comprise models that are to be understood by human experts. Therefore, we believe that Machine Learning-aided human-oriented approaches will ensure timely response to malware threats. Nowadays, because of the growth of smart devices, embedded ubiquitous computing technologies and combined with cyber world to provide many smart services, the Internet of Things (IoT) became more promising to realize that various embedded applications allow users to enjoy more comprehensive services. As an emerging research topic, embedded ubiquitous computing relate to and support a computing vision for a greater range including smart devices (mobile, wireless, service), smart environments (of embedded system devices) and smart interaction (between devices). However, in the light of the overall trend of AI driven conversion from traditional services to intelligent services, prevailing challenges arise for both conceptual foundations and technical preparation, especially involving semantic understanding and utilizations. As Knowledge Graphs are increasingly recognized as an important approach to solving problems related to semantic understanding beyond question and answering systems, various solutions focusing on Knowledge Graphs have been proposed. These cover Knowledge Graph creation, understanding, searching, reasoning, modification and especially and most recently embedding technologies with Machine Learning. A foreseeable AI landscape with explainable and interactive human interactions is becoming feasible based on Knowledge Graphs. The boundaries of the capability of Knowledge Graph usages are constantly expanding, but there are also open questions as to what issues can be solved by Knowledge Graphs alone. Hierarchical architectures which project Data, Information, Knowledge and Wisdom (DIKW) seem to be well paired with the organizing capability of Knowledge Graph technologies in terms of the 5W ( What, Where, When, How and Why). Although not yet formally settled as a uniform concept itself, Knowledge Graphs have been actually or implicitly functioning as Data Graph, Information Graph, Knowledge Graph and Wisdom Graph according to the DIKW hierarchy. Recently we have also seen the emergence of various applications and models of Knowledge Graph as a Service (KGaaS) as a gradual acceleration towards an era of strong AI in contrast to the currently prevailing weak AI. This workshop aims to bring together scientists, researchers, and industrial engineers to discuss and exchange experimental and theoretical results, novel designs, work-in-progress and case studies on theories, design mechanisms and extensions on Knowledge Graph as a Service. Understanding the societal and economic impact and human-centered aspects of a smart system or technology in advance and designing the system a-priori with potential value-added services help spur the discoveries of new tools, methodologies and innovative services. Smart service systems span across a variety of socio-technical facets comprising of devices, people, organizations, environments, and technologies to sense, actuate, control and assess the physical, cyber and societal artifacts of the human service systems. Besides the systems being self-adaptive and fault-tolerant, need to be designed in such a way that it can continuously increase the quality and productivity, the compliance and sustainability of the smart services it offers. While human-centered perspective and cognitive learning help create multi-facet value added services and catalyze the sustained economic growth of smart service systems, understanding the multi-modal sensing, control, heterogeneity and interdependency between different physical, virtual and logical components of such a complex system will enable the realization of new transformative smarter service systems. If successful, this can help improve the quality-of-service of the customers, quality-of-life of the citizens and quality-of returns of the stakeholders and investors. Nurturing the development of smart service systems seeks for inter- and trans-disciplinary crosscutting research threads from system and operational engineering, computer science and information systems, social and behavioral science, computational modeling and industrial engineering etc. The goal of this workshop is to bring together practitioners and researchers from both academia and industry in order to have a forum for discussion and technical presentations on the fundamental knowledge and principles of smart service systems that enable the value co-creation in sensing, actuating, data analytics, learning, cognition, and control of human centric cyber-physical-social systems and future of work.. Data mining techniques and algorithms to process huge amount of data in order to extract useful and interesting information have become popular in many different contexts. Algorithms are required to make sense of data automatically and in efficient ways. Nonetheless, even though sequential computer systems performance is improving, they are not suitable to keep up with the increase in the demand for data mining applications and the data size. Moreover, the main memory of sequential systems may not be enough to hold all the data related to current applications. Therefore, there is an increasing interest in the design and implementation of parallel data mining algorithms. On parallel computers, by exploiting the vast aggregate main memory and processing power of processors and accelerators, parallel algorithms can easily address both the running time and memory requirement issues. Anyway, parallelizing existing algorithms in order to achieve good performance and scalability with regard to massive datasets is not trivial. Indeed, it is of paramount importance a good data organization and decomposition strategy in order to balance the workload while minimizing data dependences. Another concern is related to minimizing synchronization and communication overhead. Finally, I/O costs should be minimized as well. The Workshop will allow exchanging ideas and results related to on-going research, focusing on high-performance aspects of data mining algorithms and applications. Creating breakthrough parallel algorithms for high-performance data mining applications requires addressing several key computing problems which may lead to novel solutions and new insights in interdisciplinary applications. The focus of the workshop is on all forms of advances in high-performance data mining algorithms and applications, and related topics. The scale of cloud computing data centers is similar to the supercomputers used in High Performance Computing. Both involve millions of CPU cores, tens of thousands of accelerators like GPUs, FPGAs connected by high speed interconnects and different connection topologies. Studies have shown that the GPU utilization in HPC is often at 50%. Virtualization can be the key to increasing resource utilization and managing massive infrastructures efficiently. GPU vendors have introduced virtualized versions of GPUs. FPGAs are being deployed in virtual infrastructure. These and other developments in the field, along with future exascale systems, will provide increasing degree of virtualization within the systems. The goal of this session is to be an opportunity to discuss and exchange research on the different virtualization technologies and how they can be efficiently applied in High Performance Computing. Special Session on High Performance Computing and Modeling & Simulation Education (HPC-Ed 2019) CALL FOR PAPERS & PARTICIPATION As part of The 17th International Conference on High Performance Computing & Simulation (HPCS 2019) http://hpcs2019.cisedu.info/ or http://conf.cisedu.info/rp/hpcs19 PURPOSE AND SCOPE The fields of High Performance Computing, Cloud Computing, Distributed Systems, Big Data and Analytics, Computational Sciences, IoT, Artificial Intelligence, and several other related subjects are essential for newly developed technologies and discoveries. The increasing power of computers has allowed to considerably extend the application of computing methodologies in research and industry, but also to the quantitative study of complex phenomena. This has permitted a broad application of numerical methods for differential equation systems (e.g., FEM, FDM, etc.) on one hand, and the application of alternative computational paradigms, such as Cellular Automata, Genetic Algorithms, Neural networks, Swarm Intelligence, etc., on the other. These latter have demonstrated their effectiveness for modelling purposes when traditional simulation methodologies have proven to be impracticable. As an abstraction, it directly mirrors high-level mathematical constructions commonly used in many fields from natural sciences over engineering to financial modelling. As a language feature, it exposes regular control flow, exhibits structured data dependencies, and lends itself to many types of program analysis. Furthermore, many modern computer architectures, particularly highly parallel architectures such as GPUs and FPGAs, lend themselves to efficiently executing array operations. This workshop is intended to bring together researchers from many different communities, including language designers, library developers, compiler researchers and practitioners who are using or working on numeric, array-centric aspects of programming languages, libraries and methodologies from all domains: imperative or declarative; object-oriented or functional; interpreted or compiled; strongly typed, weakly typed or untyped. TOPICS The ARRAY series of workshops explores: - formal semantics and design issues of array-oriented languages and libraries; - productivity and performance in compute-intensive application areas of array programming; - systematic notation for array programming, including axis- and index-based approaches; - intermediate languages, virtual machines, and program-transformation techniques for array programs; - representation of and automated reasoning about mathematical structure, such as static and dynamic sparsity, low-rank patterns, and hierarchies of these, with connections to applications such as graph processing, HPC, tensor computation and deep learning; - interfaces between array- and non-array code, including approaches for embedding array programs in general-purpose programming languages; and - efficient mapping of array programs, through compilers, libraries, and code generators, onto execution platforms, targeting multi-cores, SIMD devices, GPUs, distributed systems, and FPGA hardware, by fully automatic and user-assisted means. Data mining techniques and algorithms to process huge amount of data in order to extract useful and interesting information have become popular in many different contexts. Algorithms are required to make sense of data automatically and in efficient ways. Nonetheless, even though sequential computer systems performance is improving, they are not suitable to keep up with the increase in the demand for data mining applications and the data size. Moreover, the main memory of sequential systems may not be enough to hold all the data related to current applications. Therefore, there is an increasing interest in the design and implementation of parallel data mining algorithms. On parallel computers, by exploiting the vast aggregate main memory and processing power of processors and accelerators, parallel algorithms can easily address both the running time and memory requirement issues. Anyway, parallelizing existing algorithms in order to achieve good performance and scalability with regard to massive datasets is not trivial. Indeed, it is of paramount importance a good data organization and decomposition strategy in order to balance the workload while minimizing data dependences. Another concern is related to minimizing synchronization and communication overhead. Finally, I/O costs should be minimized as well. The Workshop will allow exchanging ideas and results related to on-going research, focusing on high-performance aspects of data mining algorithms and applications. Creating breakthrough parallel algorithms for high-performance data mining applications requires addressing several key computing problems which may lead to novel solutions and new insights in interdisciplinary applications. The focus of the workshop is on all forms of advances in high-performance data mining algorithms and applications, and related topics. With a large combination of aspects to benchmark, all the way from the capability of a single core, to cluster configuration, and to various software configurations, the benchmarking process is more of an art than science. However, the results of this process drive modern science and are vital for the community to draw sensible conclusions on the performance of applications and systems. This special session focuses on research work aimed at benchmarking modern parallel and distributed systems for addressing a number of real world problems. As a result, we need to build embedded systems and networks based on ubiquitous computing. Embedded ubiquitous computing is promising to improve people’s quality of life by creating new applications based on data processing in IoT network. Many research efforts have been performed on novel processing and communication architectures, technologies and management strategies. Embedded ubiquitous computing systems can leverage wireless sensor networks to collect and process data and use cloud technologies, peer-to-peer systems, and big data paradigms to provide computing and analytics capabilities. Nowadays, because of the growth of smart devices, embedded ubiquitous computing technologies and combined with cyber world to provide many smart services, the Internet of Things (IoT) became more promising to realize that various embedded applications allow users to enjoy more comprehensive services. As an emerging research topic, embedded ubiquitous computing relate to and support a computing vision for a greater range including smart devices (mobile, wireless, service), smart environments (of embedded system devices) and smart interaction (between devices). The EUC conference aims, as such, to provide a platform for the dissemination of recent research efforts that explicitly aim at addressing these challenges, and supports the presentation of advanced solutions in these areas. Societal Automation is not limited to integration of existing technologies in larger systems such as building automation, smart grid, or urban automation. Actually, some of the most remarkable advances have been achieved in automating personal space/life. Human companion is a good example; not only providing a day-to-day psychological support for elderly, but some with, though, still limited, “abilities” to assist in the body maintenance and feeding infirm. The functional and technical scope of those initiatives is broad. Various application domains intersect at the crossroads of the initiatives. Vision is necessary to carve the image of the initiatives. But insufficient for their realization. At the root of the success in implementing and deploying visions is technology. Technology is a tangible “realization” of solutions, which arise from innovative thinking. Specific technological solutions and devices to be blended within the adopted architectural framework representing developed system need sophisticated software tools underpinned by solid formal methodologies to assist in and guide through the design, validation, testing, deployment, and monitoring phases of the system life-cycle. The challenge laid for the broad automation of human activities and societies is vast, and requires visionary innovative thinking. Requires revolution in innovative thinking and the way we think of innovation. Nothing short of the 4th revolution in innovative thinking: Innovation 4.0. The first in the series conference on Societal Automation will attempt to take a stock of where the area id now; of the expectations and concrete plans of decision makers; of existing technologies and technologies still to be invented to support further and planned developments; of the supporting design & development software tools to make systems eventuate. The most crucial, however, are the expectations of us, individuals without major say in the Societal Automation evolution to ensure the developments serve our interest and do not threaten our privacy, body and psychological integrity, and safety in general. Paper submissions The SAC2019 conference is seeking submissions of up to 8 double-column pages reporting on novel and significant contributions to the field of industrial communication systems. Prospective authors are encouraged to submit a pdf version of their papers through the SAC2019 submission system. The submitted material (in English language) must be unpublished and not under review elsewhere. Submissions must include e-mail addresses and fax/phone numbers of the corresponding author. Work-in-Progress (WIP) sessions These sessions are intended for presentation of recent ideas and on-going works up to 4 double-column pages, describing research that has not yet produced the results required for a regular paper, but that due to its novelty and potential impact deserves to be shared with the community at an early stage. Compared with cloud computing, edge computing has many advantages: 1) Services can be done without network access. 2) Users can choose not to upload private data in exchange of cloud services. 3) Real-time service with extremely low latency is possible without the overhead of moving data to the cloud. However, the restricted resources (e.g., computation, DRAM space, and battery) of edge devices bring many new challenges to edge computing as well. A public health policy may have a significant effect on the prevention and early diagnosis and early treatment of several diffuse and debilitating conditions including, for instance, cognitive decline. The management of such health problems and their consequences through public health policies can benefit from the analysis of heterogeneous data (e.g., collected from modern IoT sensors as well as from standard clinical trials). Big Data Analytic techniques enable the investigation of specific health problems, their possible relations to other comorbidities and contextual factors, and patterns of such relations. The workshop seeks submissions from academia and industry presenting novel research on all theoretical and practical aspects concerning the adoption of Big Data Analytics in the context of evidence-based public health policy making. The workshop targets innovative techniques and solutions for supporting policy makers and clinicians in: i) taking decisions based on evidence and on ii) simulating scenarios aimed at predicting evolutions of health diseases at epidemiological level. It also aims to investigate security and privacy concerns related to the analysis of health data and the possible impact that security and privacy measures may produce on the achievable quality of analyses and the effectiveness of health policies. The workshop aims also to investigate: i) the modelling and adoption of advanced Artificial Intelligence models for policy making based on simulations and open data and ii) the possible trade-off between the design and implementation of health policies that may require years to produce their expected results and solutions able to rapidly produce tangible results. The workshop will bring together researchers of different disciplines, policy makers and clinicians, from academia and industry, all sharing a common goal: to go beyond the frontier of today's public health policy making process by envisioning how to exploit the full potential of Big Data Analytics in ways compliant with the principles and needs of modern societies, like satisfying security and privacy requirements. The scale of cloud computing data centers is similar to the supercomputers used in High Performance Computing. Both involve millions of CPU cores, tens of thousands of accelerators like GPUs, FPGAs connected by high speed interconnects and different connection topologies. Studies have shown that the GPU utilization in HPC is often at 50%. Virtualization can be the key to increasing resource utilization and managing massive infrastructures efficiently. GPU vendors have introduced virtualized versions of GPUs. FPGAs are being deployed in virtual infrastructure. These and other developments in the field, along with future exascale systems, will provide increasing degree of virtualization within the systems. The goal of this session is to be an opportunity to discuss and exchange research on the different virtualization technologies and how they can be efficiently applied in High Performance Computing. Submitted papers must not have been published or simultaneously submitted elsewhere until it appears in HPCS proceedings, in the case of acceptance, or notified otherwise. For Regular papers, please submit a PDF copy of your full manuscript, not to exceed 8 double-column formatted pages per template, and include up to 6 keywords and an abstract of no more than 400 words. Additional pages will be charged additional fee.
