CCGrid is a series of very successful conferences, sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Scalable Computing (TCSC) and ACM (Association for Computing Machinery), with the overarching goal of bringing together international researchers, developers, and users and to provide an international forum to present leading research activities and results on a broad range of topics related to these platforms and paradigms and their applications. FPGAs can tailor the hardware to the application, avoiding overheads and achieving higher hardware efficiency than general-purpose architectures. Leading FPGA manufacturers have recently made a concerted effort to provide a range of higher-level, easier-to-use high-level programming models for FPGAs, and much of the work in FPGA-based deep learning is built on these frameworks. Such initiatives are already stimulating new interest within the HPC community around the potential advantages of FPGAs over other architectures. With this in mind, this workshop, now in its fifth year, brings together HPC and heterogeneous-computing researchers to demonstrate and share experiences on how newly-available high-level programming models, including OpenCL, are already empowering HPC software developers to directly leverage FPGAs, and to identify future opportunities and needs for research in this area. ========================================================================== Submission Tracks and Contribution Selection ========================================================================== Submissions are solicited for two tracks: Track 1: Full-length papers (8 pages) for 25-minute oral presentation and publication in proceedings archived by IEEE. Track 2: Extended abstracts (4 pages) for 15-minute oral presentation without publication. Track 1 is targeted for technical papers containing a high level of implementation detail and analysis discussion of experimental results. Track 1 is suited for members of the academic and national lab community who prefer to have their work peer-reviewed, indexed and archived by IEEE. ===================================== || EuroMPI 2019 - Call for Posters || ===================================== Important Dates Posters submissions due date: 27th July 2019 (AOE) Posters notification date: 11th August 2019 Conference dates: 11th-13th September 2019 The poster session at the EuroMPI 2019 conference is an excellent opportunity to engage with the community by discussing new ideas and latest results that are not yet ready to be full papers. We are soliciting poster submissions for EuroMPI 2019 that show-case work on the Message Passing Interface (MPI) or work that is related to message-passing parallel computing. We particularly encourage graduate students to publicise their ongoing work. We invite submissions from users of MPI, developers of MPI, and researchers in the broader field of message-passing parallel computing. They are at the interface between end-users and computing infrastructures. Submitted papers must represent original unpublished research that is not currently under review for any other conference or journal. Papers not following these guidelines will be rejected without review and further action may be taken, including (but not limited to) notifications sent to the heads of the institutions of the authors and sponsors of the conference. The School of Informatics at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki will offer the MSc Course Programme on "Digital Media - Computational Intelligence" the forthcoming academic year. This MSc covers a range of advanced topics related to digital media. Digital media collectively refer to content found in audio, images, video, written and aural speech, biosignals, graphics, and virtual reality. To analyze the aforementioned content, one needs good foundations in signal processing, computer vision, graphics, pattern recognition/machine learning and computational intelligence, including associated enabling technologies (e.g., language technologies, deep learning, computer animation, brain computer interfaces). The MSc provides an excellent opportunity to develop the skills required for careers in some of the most dynamic fields in processing and analysis of big data extracted from multimedia, social networks, the web, the internet of things, without excluding complex adaptive systems of social life and robotics. While inherently parallel, they exhibit highly variable execution performance at a local level due to unpredictable memory access patterns and/or network transfers, divergent control structures, and data imbalances. Moreover, they often require fine-grain synchronization and communication on large-data structures such as graphs, trees, unstructured grids, sparse matrices, deep nets, tables, and their combinations (such as, for example, attributed graphs). They have a significant degree of latent parallelism, which however is difficult to exploit due to their complex behavior. Current high performance architectures rely on data locality and regular computation to reduce access latencies, and often do not cope well with the requirements of these applications. Furthermore, irregular applications are difficult to scale on current supercomputing machines, due to their limits in fine-grained synchronization and small data transfers. Irregular applications pertain both to well established and emerging fields, such as machine learning, social network analysis, bioinformatics, semantic graph databases, Computer Aided Design (CAD), and computer security. Many of these application areas also process massive sets of unstructured data, which keep growing exponentially. Emerging supercomputing applications are moving towards a convergence of scientific simulation, data analytics, and learning algorithms, mixed in various ways. Addressing the issues of irregular applications on current and future architectures will become critical to solve the challenges in science and data analysis of the next few years. This workshop seeks to explore solutions for supporting efficient execution of irregular applications in the form of new features at the level of the micro- and system-architecture, network, languages and libraries, runtimes, compilers, analysis, algorithms. Topics of interest, of both theoretical and practical significance, include but are not limited to: - Micro- and System-architectures, including multi- and many-core designs, heterogeneous processors, accelerators (GPUs, vector processors, Automata processor), reconfigurable (coarse grained reconfigurable and FPGA designs) and custom processors - Network architectures and interconnect (including high-radix networks, optical interconnects) - Novel memory architectures and designs (including processors-in memory) - Impact of new computing paradigms on irregular workloads (including neuromorphic processors and quantum computing) - Modeling, simulation and evaluation of novel architectures with irregular workloads - Innovative algorithmic techniques - Combinatorial algorithms (graph algorithms, sparse linear algebra, etc.) - Impact of irregularity on machine learning approaches - Parallelization techniques and data structures for irregular workloads - Data structures combining regular and irregular computations (e.g., attributed graphs) - Approaches for managing massive unstructured datasets (including streaming data) - Languages and programming models for irregular workloads - Library and runtime support for irregular workloads - Compiler and analysis techniques for irregular workloads - High performance data analytics applications (including graph databases and solutions that combine graph algorithms with machine learning) - Applications that integrate scientific simulation, data analytics, and learning, and require efficient execution of irregular workloads Besides regular papers, papers describing work-in-progress or incomplete but sound, innovative ideas related to the workshop theme are also encouraged. For these decisions to be valid, it is essential that the one not only record the process by which results were produced, but be able to reproduce the data involved at every step in the process. While we are all used to tracking source code revisions, and keeping track of program inputs and outputs, the increased complexity of end-to-end computing pipelines, coupled with new big-data and machine learning algorithms, imposes significant complexity on tracking all of the steps and associated data that went into producing a result. For example, keeping track of exactly what data use used for a training set vs. an evaluation set, what cleaning was done, what analysis was done on the results to evaluate performance, and what additional experiments were performed. With the ever-increasing number, size, and complexity of the data used in data-intensive applications, reproducing results from these types of investigations becomes increasingly difficult. While no-one deliberately sets out to create un-reproducible results, recent surveys of the literature shows that the ability to reproduce data-intensive results are the exception and not the rule. For these reasons, a symposium on issues, tools and infrastructure for data intensive applications is highly germane to the ParCo community. In this symposium, we propose to review current state of the art in reproducibility in data-intensive computing applications. We will cover three primary topic areas: - Reproducibility challenges that are specific to science and engineering activities that have data-intensive computing as a core aspect of the process - Infrastructure, tools and methods that are currently available for reproducible data-intensive applications, and gaps and challenges that need to be addressed. - How to increase the adoption of methods for reproducible data-intensive applications across the research community. This symposium (Bench 19) is organized by International Open Benchmarking Council (BenchCouncil), and the main theme is benchmarking, measuring, and optimizing Big Data or AI in HPC, Datacenter, IoT, and Edge Computing. Bench 19 provides a high-quality, single-track forum for presenting results and discussing ideas that further the knowledge and understanding of the benchmark community as a whole. Bench 19 has two special events: the AI benchmarking reports (benchmarks, performance numbers), and the AI system and algorithm competitions ( http://www.benchcouncil.org/competition/index.html ). The Ada-Europe series of conferences has over the years become a leading international forum for providers, practitioners and researchers in reliable software technologies. Big data systems often embody a number of technologies, such as cloud computing, the Internet of Things (IoT), fog computing, high-performance computing (HPC), artificial intelligence (AI), and in particular machine learning (ML). These technologies come with their own technical limitations and constraints that also impact the architecture of big data systems. Enforcing security, privacy, transparency, and ethics are also concerns of increasing importance, with potential architectural implications. OBJECTIVES ========== The Big Data Value Association (BDVA, http://www.bdva.eu/) initiated the SACBD workshop series to provide a forum for discussing all aspects of the software architecture challenges of big data systems. The workshop welcomes the contributions of practitioners and researchers alike. The workshop is open to all, both BDVA members and non-members. Technical issues and challenges related to software architecture are well covered by the European Big Data Value Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (http://www.bdva.eu/SRIA) Such software architecture trends are facilitating new data-driven operations and services which are at the core of the new economy revolving around big data value. As organizations become more and more data-centric, they need to re-design their software architectures accordingly. This affects not only the architecture design but also its implementation and non-functional aspects. For example, performance and data protection are paramount when dealing with Big Data. 2019 NIH iDASH Secure Genome Analysis Competition and Workshop (October 26, 2019, Indianapolis, Indiana, USA) Call for Participation The 6th iDASH Secure Genome Analysis Competition and Workshop is calling for participation from the academia and the industry to showcase state-of-the-art privacy technologies for protecting real-world biomedical data analysis. In the past 5 years, the iDASH competition has been serving as a bridge between the privacy/security research and the biomedical research, challenging the security community to come up with the best solutions that can offer practical supports for privacy-preserving biomedical computing. It has been widely considered to be a benchmark for evaluating data privacy technologies, particularly when they are applied to biomedical data analysis, and a key source for the biomedical and genomics researchers to seek usable solutions for protecting their data and computing tasks. This year's competition is characterized by 4 tracks as described below. Competition Tasks Track 1: Distributed Gene-Drug Interaction Data Sharing based on Blockchain and Smart Contracts The competitors are asked to develop smart contracts on a blockchain network to share gene-drug interaction data in a distributed way. Track 2: Secure Genotype Imputation using Homomorphic Encryption The competitors are required to develop a homomorphic encryption (HE) based method for performing genotype imputation Track 3: Outsourcing Privacy-preserving Machine Learning as a Service through TEE The competitors are expected to implement a trained deep learning model for disease prediction under the protection of SGX, Intel's trusted execution environment, so the model can work on encrypted genomic data uploaded by the user. Track 4: Privacy-preserving machine learning The competitors are tasked to train a machine learning model on gene expression data for breast tumors, with all the data secretly shared across multiple servers. ************************************************ Call for Papers PAW-ATM 2019: Parallel Applications Workshop, Alternatives To MPI+X Held in conjunction with SC 19, Denver, CO <http://sourceryinstitute.github.io/PAW/> ************************************************ Summary Supercomputers are becoming increasingly complex due to the prevalence of hierarchy and heterogeneity in emerging node and system architectures. As a result of these trends, users of conventional programming models for scalable high-performance applications increasingly find themselves writing applications using a mix of distinct programming models—such as Fortran90, C, C++, MPI, OpenMP, and CUDA—which are also often becoming more complex and detail-oriented themselves. These trends negatively impact the costs of developing, porting, and maintaining HPC applications. Meanwhile, new programming models and languages are being developed that strive to improve upon the status quo. This is accomplished by unifying the expression of parallelism and locality across the system, raising the level of abstraction, making use of modern language design features, and/or leveraging the respective strengths of programmers, compilers, runtimes, and operating systems. These alternatives may take the form of parallel programming languages (e.g., Chapel, Fortran 2018, Julia, UPC), frameworks for large-scale data processing and analytics (e.g., Spark, Tensorflow, Dask), or libraries and embedded DSLs that extend existing languages (e.g., Legion, COMPSs, SHMEM, HPX, Charm++, UPC++, Coarray C++, Global Arrays). The PAW-ATM workshop is designed to explore the expression of applications in scalable parallel programming models that serve as an alternative to the status quo. It is designed to bring together applications experts and proponents of high-level programming models to present concrete and practical examples of using such alternative models and to illustrate the benefits of high-level approaches to scalable programming. Scope and Aims The PAW-ATM workshop is designed as a forum for exhibiting studies of parallel applications developed using high-level parallel programming models serving as alternatives to MPI+X-based programming. We encourage the submission of papers and talks that describe practical distributed-memory applications written using alternatives to MPI+X, and include characterizations of scalability and performance, expressiveness and programmability, as well as any downsides or areas for improvement in such models. Our hope is to create a forum in which architects, language designers, and users can present, learn about, and discuss the state of the art in alternative scalable programming models while also wrestling with how to increase their effectiveness and adoption. Beyond well-established HPC scientific simulations, we also encourage submissions exploring artificial intelligence, big data analytics, machine learning, and other emerging application areas. Topics include, but are not limited to: * Novel application development using high-level parallel programming languages and frameworks. * Examples that demonstrate performance, compiler optimization, error checking, and reduced software complexity. * Applications from artificial intelligence, data analytics, bioinformatics, and other novel areas. * Performance evaluation of applications developed using alternatives to MPI+X and comparisons to standard programming models. * Novel algorithms enabled by high-level parallel abstractions. * Experience with the use of new compiler and runtime environments. * Libraries using or supporting alternatives to MPI+X. * Benefits of hardware abstraction and data locality on algorithm implementation. Submissions Submissions are solicited in two categories: 1) Full-length papers presenting novel research results: * Full-length papers will be published in the workshop proceedings. Submitted papers must describe original work that has not appeared in, nor is under consideration for, another conference or journal. Papers shall be eight (8) pages minimum and not exceed ten (10) including text, appendices, and figures. We apologize if you receive multiple copies of this call for papers. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10th Workshop on Resiliency in High Performance Computing (Resilience) in Clusters, Clouds, and Grids <http://www.csm.ornl.gov/srt/conferences/Resilience/2017> in conjunction with the 23rd International European Conference on Parallel and Distributed Computing (Euro-Par), Santiago de Compostela, Spain, August 28 - September 1, 2017 <http://europar2017.usc.es> Overview: Resilience is a critical challenge as high performance computing (HPC) systems continue to increase component counts, individual component reliability decreases (such as due to shrinking process technology and near-threshold voltage (NTV) operation), and software complexity increases. Application correctness and execution efficiency, in spite of frequent faults, errors, and failures, is essential to ensure the success of the extreme-scale HPC systems, cluster computing environments, Grid computing infrastructures, and Cloud computing services. While a fault (e.g., a bug or stuck bit) is the cause of an error, its manifestation as a state change is considered an error (e.g., a bad value or incorrect execution), and the transition to an incorrect service is observed as a failure (e.g., an application abort or system crash). A failure in a computing system is typically observed through an application abort or a full/partial service or system outage. A detectable correctable error is often transparently handled by hardware, such as a single bit flip in memory that is protected with single-error correction double-error detection (SECDED) error correcting code (ECC). A detectable uncorrectable error (DUE) typically results in a failure, such as multiple bit flips in the same addressable word that escape SECDED ECC correction, but not detection, and ultimately cause an application abort. An undetectable error (UE) may result in silent data corruption (SDC), e.g., an incorrect application output. There are many other types of hardware and software faults, errors, and failures in computing systems. Resilience for HPC systems encompasses a wide spectrum of fundamental and applied research and development, including theoretical foundations, fault detection and prediction, monitoring and control, end-to-end data integrity, enabling infrastructure, and resilient solvers and algorithm-based fault tolerance. This workshop brings together experts in the community to further research and development in HPC resilience and to facilitate exchanges across the computational paradigms of extreme-scale HPC, cluster computing, Grid computing, and Cloud computing. Submission Guidelines: Authors are invited to submit papers electronically in English in PDF format. Submitted manuscripts should be structured as technical papers and BETWEEN 10 AND 12 PAGES, including figures, tables and references, using Springer's Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) format at <http://www.springer.com/computer/lncs?SGWID=0-164-6-793341-0>. Papers with less than 10 or more than 12 pages will not be accepted due to publisher guidelines. Submissions should include abstract, key words and the e-mail address of the corresponding author.
