Environmental Computing workshop Co-located with ISGC 2017 March 6, 2017, Academia Sinica, Taipei, Taiwan Abstract submission deadline 25th January 2017 http://envcomp.eu/ISGC17 There are several domain- or problem-specific areas – such as meteorology, hydrology, agronomy or disaster risk management and response – that use multi-model and multi-data approaches to analyse environmental phenomena and their impact. However, a more general approach to produce actionable knowledge from different environmental data sources is needed. The topic is of acute interest due to societal challenges and technical developments that require developing approaches to generalise, productise and mature current state-of-the-art environmental modelling solutions for managing disasters and disaster risks. The workshop will bring together together practitioners, policymakers, environmental modelling experts to present the latest developments in Environmental Computing. Paper submissions by groups working on these or related fields are encouraged in order to inspire communication across different specialties. It is a yearly meeting where academics present their latest algorithms, models and technologies, and explore new trends and ideas on various computer graphics topics. Since 1983 it has been held in numerous different cities worldwide including Geneva, Tokyo, Sydney, Boston, Singapore and many different countries in Europe, Asia, Australia and North & South America. CGI'17, the 34th annual conference will take place on June 27th – June 30th 2017 in Yokohama, Japan. K. Clifford's geometric algebras (GA) in solving computer graphics and vision problems. In the meantime, the geometric algebra community focused on GA applications and greatly advanced it as an adequate and viable computing technology. The CGI’16 “Geometric Algebra in Computer Science and Engineering Workshop” began to bridge that gap. Under the auspices of CGI’17, ENGAGE (Empowering Novel Geometric Algebra for Graphics & Engineering) (new workshop name 2017) on Tuesday, 27th June 2017 in Yokohama, Japan, will again engage in a novel multi-disciplinary approach from mathematics, to computer graphics, computer vision and general computer science fields where GA has strong potential to provide novel answers to existing mathematical problems. GA is in a particularly well suited position to allow cross-disciplinary solutions in software engineering as it provides an intuitive and insightful common denominator across mathematical disciplines that have often advanced and specialized for specific application purposes; the use and knowledge of GA encourages us to overcome distinct, seemingly incompatible paths by providing a shareable mathematical base again. For example, we expect geometric algebra based contributions to GIS research, data modelling & data structures, adaptive & parallel computing, remote sensing data analysis, UAV target location and other domains. ACM IUI is where the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) community meets the Artificial Intelligence (AI), with contributions from related fields such as psychology, behavioral science, cognitive science, computer graphics, design or the arts. The objective of IUI's student support is to encourage students interested in subjects related to Intelligent User Interfaces to become active members of the IUI community. To apply, the student should be actively enrolled as a student in an academic institution. Priority will be given to students who are first authors of accepted papers and to participants in the doctoral consortium, to minorities and women. Recipients of the stipend are also expected to help the conference organization as student volunteers. The level of support will be determined by the availability of funds and the number of eligible applications. The IUI Chairs will decide about the allocation of the sources of support to students that will be eligible for travelling grants (there are some differences between the sources and what is required from the students - see below). If you will present at the conference, please provide the title of the submission and its type (e.g. research paper, student consortium, demo). The location you are flying from and the cost for your airfare, as determined by the availability of low-cost economy fares for travel to the conference. New applications, such as virtual reality and smart building control, have emerged due to the large number of resources and services brought by cloud computing. However, the delay-sensitive applications face the problem of large latency, especially when several smart devices and objects are getting involved in human’s life such as the case of smart cities or Internet of Things. Therefore, cloud computing is unable to meet the requirements of low latency, location awareness, and mobility support. To solve this problem, researchers have introduced a trusted and dependable solution through the Fog and the Mobile Edge Computing (FMEC) to put the services and resources of the cloud closer to users, which facilitates the leveraging of available services and resources in the edge networks. By this, we are moving from the core (cloud data centers) to the edge of the network closer to the users. FMEC dependability is based on providing user centric service. The purpose of Fog and the Mobile Edge Computing is to run the heavy real-time applications at the network edge directly using the billions of connected mobile devices. Several features enable the Fog and the Mobile Edge Computing to be a perfect paradigm to the aforementioned purpose, which are the dense geographical deployment of servers, supporting mobility and the closeness to users. As in every new technology, some challenges face the vision of the Fog and the Mobile Edge Computing, which are the administrative policies and security concerns (i.e. secure data storage, secure computation, network security, data privacy, usage privacy, location privacy, etc). FMEC 2017 conference aims to investigate the opportunities and requirements for Mobile Edge Computing dominance. In addition, it seeks for novel contributions that help mitigating Mobile Edge Computing challenges. Conventional control and management platforms are facing considerable challenges regarding flexibility, dependability and security that next generation systems will require. The cloud computing paradigm has gone part of the way towards alleviating some of the problems associated with resource allocation, utilization and managements (e.g., via elasticity). However, many of the elements of a well-designed cloud environment remain “stiff” and hard to modify and adapt in an integrated fashion. This includes underlying networking topologies, many aspects of the user control over IaaS, PaaS or SaaS layers when such is needed, construction of XaaS services, provenance and meta-data collection, and so on. In many situations the problem may be because service abstraction is inadequate. Software Defined Systems (SDS) are systems that have added software components which help abstract actual IT equipment and other layers.One classical example, of course, are hypervisors. Such separation provides a great opportunity for system administrators to more easily construct and managing their systems through flexible software layers. Software Defined Systems include Software Defined Networking (SDN), Software Defined Storage, Software Defined Servers (Virtualization), Software Defined Datacenters (SDD), Software Defined Security (SDSec), and ultimately Software Defined Clouds (SDCloud) to name a few possibilities. Individual solutions and seamless integration of these abstractions remains in many respects a challenge. After the high success of the previous editions (SDS'2014, SDS'2015 and SDS'2016), The fourth International confernce on Software Defined Systems 2017 (SDS'2017) will continue to be a forum for scientists, researchers, students, and practitioners to present their latest research results, ideas, and developments in the area of software defined systems – both components and their integration - and by implication advancement of next generation clouds. Scope and Interests: The technological trends of HPC system evolution indicates increasing burden for application developers in management of the unprecedented levels of complexity in hardware and the associated performance characteristics. Many existing application codes are unlikely to perform well on future systems without major modifications or even complete rewrites. It will be important to utilize, in unison, many characteristics such as multiple levels of parallelism, many lightweight cores, complex memory hierarchies, novel I/O technology, power capping, systemwide temporal/spatial performance heterogeneity and reliability concerns. The HPC community has developed new programming models, algorithms, libraries and tools to meet these challenges in order to accommodate productive code development and effective system use. However, the application community still needs to identify the benefit through practical evaluations. The focus of this workshop is on methodologies and experiences of scientific and engineering applications and algorithms to achieve sustainable code development for better productivity, application performance and reliability. The conference is run in Europe but attracts researchers from all over the world. The 21st ADBIS conference will be held in Nicosia, Cyprus. The conference is accompanied by satellite events, including PhD consortia and workshops. WORKSHOPS Typically, workshops focus on multiple topics related to data storage and processing. This year we would encourage also workshops focusing on practical applications of research in business/industry and on joint projects run by industry and research entitites. (Apologies for cross-posts) ----------------------------- CALL FOR PAPERS AW4city 2017, 3rd International ACM Smart City Workshop: Enhancing Livability with Web Applications for smart cities In conjunction with WWW'17: 26th World Wide Web International Conference Perth, Australia, April 3, 2017 http://aw4city2017.wordpress.com Workshop Objective ---------------------------- Following up the success of past events at WWW2015 and WWW2016, AW4City 2017 aims to keep on attracting a significant international attention with regard to web applications for smart cities. The aim of this workshop is to address web-based application and Apps' design and development in the smart city and urban context. More specifically, it focuses on innovative applications smart city component and more specifically on the design and implementation of web-based applications and Apps. This component is crucial, since it addresses all the smart city dimensions: . Economy, since new types of entrepreneurship and innovative business models appear in data, creative and climate economies, and develop web applications and Apps. . Mobility, with regard to urban transportation (intelligent transportation), distance working, job offering demonstration etc. . Environment, since applications enhance resource management, transportation improvement, environmental monitoring etc. . Living, since applications enhance local life (i.e., e-learning, e-banking, e-commerce, e-tourism etc.). . People, since they concern applications' end users and . Governance, where open data and e-government applications play crucial roles in smart city operation. This year, the workshop will emphasize on the contribution of web applications and Apps to city livability. Livability stands for local quality of life and citizen satisfaction in terms of education, environment, stability, healthcare, and infrastructure. Livable Melbourne for instance, is the outcome of a development, policy and planning path, while today is the showpiece, the workplace, and the venue for the young and restless to play. In this respect, this workshop aims to demonstrate how web applications and Apps can enhance city's quality of life and citizen satisfaction (i.e., from smart service delivery; from transactions with the local government and utilities; from the existence of local online gaming, training, entertainment, business etc.). Theoretical concepts, empirical evidence and selected case studies from leading scholars and practitioners in the field showing the "big picture" of smart cities and urban areas will be examined in this workshop. This workshop aims at gathering researchers from the fields of smart cities and web application development to think about the obstacles that hurdle the leveraging of understanding and capturing of smart city trends with regard web application development that interconnect citizens, businesses and government in a smart city. AW4City 2017 is timely, since an increasing criticism is being generated that smart city represents an ambiguous urban utopia, which is supported by the partnership of local governments with big technological vendors. We target researchers from both industry and academia to join forces in this exciting area. We intend to discuss the recent and significant developments in the general areas of smart cities and web applications and to promote cross-fertilization of techniques. In particular, we aim at identifying trends and respective applications in smart cities; the potential impact of smart city in web applications; techniques from end-to-end solutions' or apps' development that will enable researchers to understand the dynamic phenomena in smart cities, as well as specify important directions for the research communities. Standards for web applications' development in smart cities is interesting for several areas such as sustainability, crisis management, marketing, security, and interoperability. To address the above mentioned aspects, we solicit the following topics (but not limited to): . Theoretical foundations on Smart City applications and standards; . Smart City management systems; . Practices of Web applications and Apps in smart cities; . Creative partnerships and creative industries in Smart City (Internet Economics and Monetization); . Pervasive Web and Mobility for Smart City emerging topics (i.e., energy, water, waste, transportation etc.) . The role of government for smart city applications development and standardization (i.e., promotion push, start-ups, open data); . Web Infrastructure standardization; . The role of standards on smart city web mining; . Smart city e-services for evaluation and benchmarking; . Smart city information quality and evolution in social content; . Ensuring security and privacy in Smart Cities: the role of web applications. Submission ------------------------------------- We welcome full research papers, research in progress, and discussion papers. Full papers should be up to 6 pages long (max 5000 words), including the abstract and appendices. Discussion papers may be short (up to 4 pages), but should clearly and distinctly address one or more issues pertinent to Smart City research including research methods and quality as well as focus of studies. Papers should be designed to support in-depth discussions of one of these issues during the workshop. Although it is a half-day event, the workshop papers will be clustered and each session will discuss a small set of papers focusing on similar or related issues. Submission Guidelines -------------------------------------- The accepted papers will be included in the companion volume of WWW2017's proceeding, which will be published by ACM and included in the ACM Digital Library. All submitted papers must be: - written in English; - contain author names, affiliations, and email addresses; - be formatted according to the ACM SIG Proceedings template (http://www.acm.org/publications/proceedings-template) with a font size no smaller than 9pt; - be in PDF (make sure that the PDF can be viewed on any platform), and formatted for US Letter size. Web-based systems, social networks and multi-agent systems very often need these tools for working out consistent knowledge states, resolving conflicts and making decisions. ICCCI 2017 is the 9th edition of the conference organized by the University of Cyprus and Wroclaw University of Science and Technology in Poland, in cooperation with the IEEE SMC Technical Committee on Computational Collective Intelligence. The aim of the conference is to provide an internationally respected forum for scientific research in the computer-based methods of collective intelligence and their applications in (but not limited to) such fields as group decision making, consensus computing, knowledge integration, semantic web, social networks and multi-agent systems. Instructions to Authors Prospective authors of papers are invited to submit contributions for presentations at ICCCI 2017. The submissions should present the results of original research or innovative practical applications relevant to the conference topics. Practical experiences with state-of-the-art in CCI methodologies are also acceptable to reflect lessons of unique value for the conference attendees. Contributions should be original and not published elsewhere or intended to be published during the review process. The conference language is English. The conference proceedings of ICCCI 2017 will be published in the prestigious Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence series by Springer and indexed by ISI(CPCI-S), Web of Science, EI, Scopus, DBLP, ACM Digital Library. All submissions should follow the LNCS/LNAI style and not exceed 10 pages. At least one full registration is required for each accepted paper in order to be included in the ICCCI 2017 proceedings. To ensure high quality, all papers will be thoroughly reviewed by the ICCCI 2017 International Program Committee. They intend to provide researchers in focused areas the opportunity to present and discuss their work, as well as to offer a forum for interaction among a broader community of researchers. A Special Session or Workshop will consist of a group of papers in a sub-discipline of Computational Collective Intelligence related to the main topics of ICCCI 2017. The papers will be required to meet the same standards as ICCCI 2017 papers and will be published in the conference proceedings, in a bound volume by Springer in their Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence series. All the Special Sessions and Workshops will be centralized as tracks in the same conference submission and reviewing system (EasyChair) as the regular papers. Call for Tutorials ------------------ Tutorials should address subjects that fall within the scope of the conference and may be proposed as either half- or full-day events. Proposals should include a title, an abstract, a description of the topic, a detailed outline of the presentation, a description of the presenter's lecturing expertise in general and with the proposed topic in particular, the proposed duration (half day or full day), the intended level of the tutorial (introductory, intermediate, or advanced), the recommended audience experience and background, and a statement of the reasons for attending. Proposals should be submitted by e-mail to the Tutorial Chair. The authors of accepted full-day tutorials will receive a complimentary conference registration as well as a fee for every paying participant in excess of 5; for half-day tutorials, these benefits will be accordingly halved. Renowned academics and industry pioneers will lecture and share their views with the audience. Most big data subareas will be displayed, namely foundations, infrastructure, management, search and mining, security and privacy, and applications (to biological and health sciences, to business, finance and transportation, to online social networks, etc.). Main challenges of analytics, management and storage of big data will be identified through 4 keynote lectures, 24 six-hour courses, and 1 round table, which will tackle the most active and promising topics. The organizers are convinced that outstanding speakers will attract the brightest and most motivated students. Interaction will be a main component of the event. An open session will give participants the opportunity to present their own work in progress in 5 minutes. ADDRESSED TO: In principle, graduate students, PhD students and postdocs from around the world will be the most typical profiles. However, there are no formal pre-requisites for participation in terms of academic degrees. Since there will be differences in level, specific knowledge background may be assumed for some of the courses. This is a branch of artificial intelligence covering a spectrum of current exciting machine learning research and industrial innovation that provides more efficient algorithms to deal with large-scale data in neuroscience, computer vision, speech recognition, language processing, drug discovery, biomedical informatics, recommender systems, learning theory, robotics, games, etc. Renowned academics and industry pioneers will lecture and share their views with the audience. Most deep learning subareas will be displayed, and main challenges identified through 4 keynote lectures, 24 six-hour courses, and 1 round table, which will tackle the most active and promising topics. The organizers are convinced that outstanding speakers will attract the brightest and most motivated students. Interaction will be a main component of the event. An open session will give participants the opportunity to present their own work in progress in 5 minutes. ADDRESSED TO: In principle, graduate students, doctoral students and postdocs from around the world will be typical profiles of participants. However, there are no formal pre-requisites for attendance in terms of academic degrees. Since there will be a variety of levels, specific knowledge background may be assumed for some of the courses. There are a multitude of CPS devices and applications being deployed to serve critical functions in our lives. The security of CPS becomes extremely important. This workshop will provide a platform for professionals from academia, government, and industry to discuss how to address the increasing security challenges facing CPS. Besides invited talks, we also seek novel submissions describing theoretical and practical security solutions to CPS. Papers that are pertinent to the security of embedded systems, SCADA, smart grid, and critical infrastructure networks are all welcome, especially in the domains of energy and transportation. All submissions should be appropriately anonymized (i.e., papers should not contain author names or affiliations, or obvious citations). Submissions must be in double‐column ACM SIG Proceedings format, and should not exceed 12 pages. Position papers and short papers of 6 pages describing the work in progress are also welcome. Only pdf files will be accepted. Authors of accepted papers must guarantee that their papers will be presented at the workshop. At least one author of the paper must be registered at the appropriate conference rate. Accepted papers will be published in the ACM Digital Library. There will also be a best paper award. This is an annual event that aims to bring together researchers in computational geometry and related fields as well as interested researchers and students, from all over the world. The school covers advanced topics in computational geometry and related fields presented by the invited speakers as well as the primary concepts of these fields presented in a 3 day seminar held before this event. This workshop provides a friendly atmosphere to work on computational geometry problems, present and discuss the results, and establish scientific collaborations. An international certificate will be presented by the 9th Winter School on Computational Geometry to the participants. The 9th Winter School on Computational Geometry will cover concepts in Computational Geometry and Architectural Geometry.
