Dear All: The deadline is approaching for papers to be submitted to the 21st IEEE International Workshop on Parallel and Distributed Scientific and Engineering Computing (PDSEC-20). See http://cse.stfx.ca/~pdsec20/ . It will be held on May 22, 2020 in New Orleans in conjunction with IPDPS 2020. Deadline: PDSEC-20 deadline: 31 Jan 2020 (AoE) Scope and Interests: The technological trends in HPC system evolution indicates an increasing burden placed on application developers due to the management of the unprecedented complexity levels of hardware and its associated performance characteristics. Many existing scientific applications codes are unlikely to perform well on future systems without major modifications or even complete rewrites. In the future, it will be necessary to utilize, in concert, many characteristics such as multiple levels of parallelism, many lightweight cores, complex memory hierarchies, novel I/O technology, power capping, system-wide temporal/spatial performance heterogeneity and reliability concerns. The parallel and distributed computing community has developed new programming models, algorithms, libraries and tools to meet these challenges in order to accommodate productive code development and effective system use. However, the scientific application community still needs to identify the benefit through practical evaluations. Thus, the focus of this workshop is on methodologies and experiences used in scientific and engineering applications and algorithms to achieve sustainable code development for better productivity, application performance and reliability. 43rd International ACM SIGIR Conference on Research and Development in Information Retrieval July 25-30, 2020 (Xi'an, China); DC on July 26 https://sigir.org/sigir2020/call-for-doctoral-consortium-papers/ SIGIR is the major international forum for the presentation of new research results and for the demonstration of new systems and techniques in the broad field of information retrieval (IR). The ACM SIGIR 2020 Doctoral Consortium will provide doctoral students with a unique opportunity to have substantive interaction with other researchers regarding their proposed dissertation research. The objectives of the Doctoral Consortium are: * To provide a forum where doctoral students can present and discuss their research with experienced IR researchers: the members of the Doctoral Consortium Program Committee. * To provide students with an opportunity to establish a supportive community, including other doctoral students at a similar stage of their dissertation research. The Consortium will take place the day before the main conference (on Sunday, July 26th, 2020), with the format including: student presentations with plenary discussions, individual 1:1 meetings with experienced researchers, interactive networking sessions over lunch, and panel sessions with a special emphasis on gaining insights regarding career paths after the PhD. Prospective attendees should have written, or be close to completing, a thesis proposal (or equivalent). It is desirable that students not be so close to completing their PhD that the event would have little impact on their work, or so early that a topic has not been chosen. Before submitting, students should discuss this criterion with their advisor or supervisor. To apply for a place at the Doctoral Consortium, candidates should submit a paper up to 5+1 pages in length, solely authored by the student - see submission guidelines below. Candidates will be selected based on the potential of their research for future impact on the field of information retrieval, as well as for the likely benefit to the student from participating in the Consortium. We note that SIGIR 2020 DC is deeply committed to improving the field of IR by making it more diverse, equitable, and inclusive. We highly encourage women and students from other underrepresented groups to apply. For each selected student, a one page extended abstract will be published in the SIGIR 2020 Conference Proceedings. Extended abstracts will be invited after selection, and should not be submitted with the proposal. Doctoral students who submit to the Consortium are allowed to have previously published their research, and are encouraged to submit full, short, or demo papers of their work to the SIGIR 2020 conference and associated workshops. Priority is given to students chosen to attend the Consortium when travel grants are determined for the conference, and generally grants will be awarded to chosen students. To get the most out of the discussion, it should include: * Motivation for the proposed research. * Background and related work (including key references). * Description of proposed research, including main research questions. * Research methodology and proposed experiments (where appropriate). * Specific research issues for discussion at the Doctoral Consortium. In addition, a one page appendix to the paper (placed after the references) must include the following: A detailed statement by the student explaining why they want to participate in the SIGIR 2020 Doctoral Consortium at this point in their doctoral studies, and how they hope it will contribute to the development of their work and potential future career. A statement by the student’s advisor/supervisor saying how the student would benefit by attending the Consortium. Advisors should also specifically state whether the student has written, or is close to completing, a thesis proposal (or equivalent), and when they expect the student would defend their dissertation if they progress at a typical rate. Format Requirements Submissions must be written in English and submitted in the 2017 ACM Master Article Template (for LaTeX, use the “sigconf” option). The paper should be no more than 5 pages in length including all figures and references, but excluding the one page appendix. The first page must contain the title of the paper, full author name, affiliation and contact details, an abstract of up to 250 words, ACM Computing Classification System (CCS) categories, and up to 3 keywords describing the topic areas. Information about categories and keywords can be found in ACM Web pages on the computing classification system and in the LaTeX and Word templates. Doctoral Consortium papers will not be published in the SIGIR Conference Proceedings; only one-page extended abstracts, invited from accepted students will be published. This year, special focus will be on the challenging issues related to all the opportunities of computing, sensing and communication in the era of the integration of Internet of Things, Cloud Computing, and Big Data. The Workshops Committee of SMARTCOMP 2020 invites proposals for half or full day workshops affiliated with the conference, on topics of interest to SMARTCOMP 2020 attendees. The purpose of these workshops is to create new opportunities for presenting novel ideas in a less formal and possibly more sharply focused way than at the conference itself. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, Internet of Things, Software-Defined Networking, Big Data, Cloud Computing, M2M communications and Smart Grid. Papers presented in the SMARTCOMP 2020 workshops will be included in the conference proceedings and submitted for publication in IEEE Xplore®. Smart computing is based on the synergistic combination of advances in Sensor-based technologies, the Internet of Things (IoT), Cyber-Physical Systems, Edge cloud computing, Big Data analytics, Machine Learning, Cognitive Computing, and Artificial Intelligence. Smart computing is a multidisciplinary domain. Applications of smart computing can be found in different societal domains including, but not limited to, transportation, energy, environmental protection, smart and connected communities, healthcare, banking, entertainment, and social media. Algorithmic and system advancements of edge cloud computing, mobile/pervasive computing, cyber-physical systems, sensor networking and social computing are taking smart computing to a new dimension and improving our ways of living. SMARTCOMP 2020 is the 6th edition of the conference and will be held in the historical city of Bologna, Italy, hosted by the University of Bologna, the holdest University of the western world. SMARTCOMP 2020 will include smart computing innovations pertaining to pervasive/ubiquitous computing, edge cloud computing, sensor networks, IoT, big data analytics, security and privacy, social computing, cognitive computing, cyber-physical systems and their application and validation within smart computing environments. This includes applications such as smart buildings, smart cities, smart grids, precision agriculture and other innovations contributing to smart living. Submission Guidelines -------------------- Paper submissions must be no longer than 8 pages and formatted according to the two-column IEEE proceedings template. IEEE provides corresponding formatting templates at IEEE conference template. Make sure to use the conference mode of the template, i.e., LaTeX users must use the conference option of the IEEEtran document class. Papers must be submitted electronically as a single PDF file on US Letter size paper (not A4), with all fonts embedded (the PDF-A standard complies with that), through EDAS (https://edas.info/newPaper.php?c=26894) Prior to submission, ensure that any running headers/footers, page numbering, as well as blue underlining for URLs and email addresses has been removed. All submitted papers will be subject to peer reviews by Technical Program Committee members and other experts in the field. *** CALL FOR PAPERS -- Submission Deadline Extension *** Tenth International Workshop on Advances in High-Performance Computational Earth Sciences: Applications and Frameworks (IHPCES 2020) https://www.cspp.cc.u-tokyo.ac.jp/IHPCES2020/ Dear colleagues, IHPCES 2020, the 10th workshop in the series of "Advances in High-Performance Computational Earth Sciences" workshops, will take place in conjunction with the ICCS 2020 Conference in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, from June 3-5, 2020. The objective of this series of workshops is to provide a forum for presentation and discussion of state-of-the-art research in high performance computational earth sciences. IHPCES workshops foster communication between Earth scientists, applied mathematicians, and computer scientists. The workshop therefore presents a unique opportunity to exchange advanced knowledge, computational methods, and science discoveries in computational geosciences. Many real-world analytic workloads are a mix of graph and machine learning methods. Graphs play an important role in the synthesis and analysis of relationships and organizational structures, furthering the ability of machine-learning methods to identify signature features. Given the difference in the parallel execution models of graph algorithms and machine learning methods, current tools, runtime systems, and architectures do not deliver consistently good performance across data analysis workflows. In this workshop we are interested in graphs, how their synthesis (representation) and analysis is supported in hardware and software, and the ways graph algorithms interact with machine learning. The workshop’s scope is broad and encompasses the wide range of methods used in large-scale data analytics workflows. This workshop seeks papers on the theory, model-based analysis, simulation, and analysis of operational data for graph analytics and related machine learning applications. In particular, we are interested, but not limited to the following topics: • Provide tractability and performance analysis in terms of complexity, time-to-solution, problem size, and quality of solution for systems that deal with mixed data analytics workflows; • Discuss the problem domains and problems addressable with graph methods, machine learning methods, or both; • Discuss programming models and associated frameworks such as Pregel, Galois, Boost, GraphBLAS, GraphChi, etc., for building large multi-attributed graphs; • Discuss how frameworks for building graph algorithms interact with those for building machine learning algorithms; • Discuss hardware platforms specialized for addressing large, dynamic, multi-attributed graphs and associated machine learning; Besides regular papers, short papers (up to four pages) describing work-in-progress or incomplete but sound, innovative ideas related to the workshop theme are also encouraged. Although the development of artificial intelligence is still in its beginnings, it has already triggered an enormous rush of utopian and dystopian thinking. While some dream of immortality and the vanquishing of poverty, disease, and warfare, others foresee a grim future for those parts of humanity that will find themselves outpaced by technology. Potential consequences of the changes imposed by technological advancement on human practice reach from the level of the individual, through cultural techniques, to the organization of society as a whole, raising fundamental questions which we will address in the four sections of the conference resp. special events. Special events are planned by the AI-team around the topics "Social robotics" and "A technological roadmap for AI after 2050". Cloud data centers are the backbone infrastructure for tomorrow's information technology. We are also interested in contemporary software topics, such as IoT and artificial intelligence and their application to reliability and safety. Tutorial proposals shall include a title, an abstract, a description of the topic, an outline of the presentation, the proposed duration (half day or full day), and the intended level of the tutorial (introductory, intermediate, or advanced). Cloud providers need to manage complex infrastructures in a seamless fashion to support the highly dynamic and heterogeneous workloads and hosted applications customers deploy. Similarly, HPC environments have been increasingly adopting techniques that enable flexible management of vast computing and networking resources, close to marginal provisioning cost, which is unprecedented in the history of scientific and commercial computing. Most recently, Function as a Service (Faas) and Serverless computing, utilizing lightweight VMs-containers widens the spectrum of applications that can be deployed in a cloud environment, especially in an HPC context. Here, HPC-provided services can be become accessible to distributed workloads outside of large cluster environments. Various virtualization-containerization technologies contribute to the overall picture in different ways: machine virtualization, with its capability to enable consolidation of multiple underutilized servers with heterogeneous software and operating systems (OSes), and its capability to live-migrate a fully operating virtual machine (VM) with a very short downtime, enables novel and dynamic ways to manage physical servers; OS-level virtualization (i.e., containerization), with its capability to isolate multiple user-space environments and to allow for their coexistence within the same OS kernel, promises to provide many of the advantages of machine virtualization with high levels of responsiveness and performance; lastly, unikernels provide for many virtualization benefits with a minimized OS/library surface. I/O Virtualization in turn allows physical network interfaces to take traffic from multiple VMs or containers; network virtualization, with its capability to create logical network overlays that are independent of the underlying physical topology is furthermore enabling virtualization of HPC infrastructures. Publication Accepted papers will be published in a Springer LNCS proceedings volume. Many real-world analytic workloads are a mix of graph and machine learning methods. Graphs play an important role in the synthesis and analysis of relationships and organizational structures, furthering the ability of machine-learning methods to identify signature features. Given the difference in the parallel execution models of graph algorithms and machine learning methods, current tools, runtime systems, and architectures do not deliver consistently good performance across data analysis workflows. In this workshop we are interested in graphs, how their synthesis (representation) and analysis is supported in hardware and software, and the ways graph algorithms interact with machine learning. The workshop’s scope is broad and encompasses the wide range of methods used in large-scale data analytics workflows. This workshop seeks papers on the theory, model-based analysis, simulation, and analysis of operational data for graph analytics and related machine learning applications. Deadline: PDSEC-20 deadline: 31 Jan 2020 (AoE) Scope and Interests: The technological trends in HPC system evolution indicates an increasing burden placed on application developers due to the management of the unprecedented complexity levels of hardware and its associated performance characteristics. Many existing scientific applications codes are unlikely to perform well on future systems without major modifications or even complete rewrites. In the future, it will be necessary to utilize, in concert, many characteristics such as multiple levels of parallelism, many lightweight cores, complex memory hierarchies, novel I/O technology, power capping, system-wide temporal/spatial performance heterogeneity and reliability concerns. The parallel and distributed computing community has developed new programming models, algorithms, libraries and tools to meet these challenges in order to accommodate productive code development and effective system use. However, the scientific application community still needs to identify the benefit through practical evaluations. Dear Computer vision/machine learning, students, engineers, scientists and enthusiasts, Artificial Intelligence and Information analysis (AIIA) Lab, AUTH is proud to launch the live CVML Web lecture series that will cover very important topics Computer vision/machine learning. Top scientists internationally will deliver these lectures, aiming at providing in-depth knowledge on various CVML topics. The 1-hour lectures will take place on Saturdays, to avoid conflicts with other intended registrant schedules/duties: a) Saturdays 11:00 EET (17:00 Beijing time) and b) Saturdays 20:00 EET (13:00 EST, 10:00 PST for NY/LA, respectively) for audience in the Americas. Each lecture will be announced at least 1 week in advance in various relevant email lists and in the www page: http://icarus.csd.auth.gr/cvml-web-lecture-series/ Lectures will consist primarily of live lecture streaming and PPT slides. Attendees (registrants) need no special computer equipment for attending the lecture. They will receive the lecture PDF before each lecture and will have the ability to ask questions real-time. Audience should have basic University-level undergraduate knowledge of any science or engineering department (calculus, probabilities, programming, that are typical e.g., in any ECE, CS, EE undergraduate program). More advanced knowledge (signals and systems, optimization theory, machine learning) is very helpful but nor required. The first web lecture on 'Fast Convolution Algorithms for deep learning and computer vision' by Professor Ioannis Pitas (see attached abstract and CV), will take place on 14th December 2019, 13:00 EET only. Registration can be done using the link: http://icarus.csd.auth.gr/cvml-web-lecture-series/ Fast convolution algorithms for computer vision and machine learning 2D convolutions play an extremely important role in machine learning, as they form the first layers of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). They are also very important for computer vision (template matching through correlation, correlation trackers) and in image processing (image filtering/denoising/restoration). 3D convolutions are very important for machine learning (video analysis through CNNs) and for video filtering/denoising/restoration. 1D convolutions are extensively used in digital signal processing (filtering/denoising) and analysis (also through CNNs) Therefore, 1D/2D/3D convolution algorithms are very important both for machine learning and for signal/image/video processing and analysis. As their computational complexity is of the order O(N^2), O(N^4) and O(N^6) respectively their fast execution is a must. This lecture will overview linear and cyclic convolution. Then it will present their fast execution through FFTs, resulting in algorithms having computational complexity of the order O(Nlog2N), O(N^2log2N) for 1D and 2D convolutions respectively. Finally, optimal Winograd 1D and 2D convolution algorithms will be presented having theoretically minimal number of computations. Emphasis will be on 1D convolution algorithms, as there will be another lecture on 2D convolution algorithms soon. Prof. I. Pitas was lucky to have done his PhD degree on fast convolution algorithms more than 30 years ago. Now this topic re-emerged as key technology for deep learning and computer vision, primarily to address fast CNN training and inference, thanks to advances primarily in GPU programming, but also in multicore CPU programming. Prof. Ioannis Pitas (IEEE fellow, IEEE Distinguished Lecturer, EURASIP fellow) received the Diploma and PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, both from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. Since 1994, he has been a Professor at the Department of Informatics of the same University. He served as a Visiting Professor at several Universities. His current interests are in the areas of image/video processing, machine learning, computer vision, intelligent digital media, human centered interfaces, affective computing, 3D imaging and biomedical imaging. He has published over 1138 papers, contributed in 50 books in his areas of interest and edited or (co-)authored another 11 books. He has also been member of the program committee of many scientific conferences and workshops. In the past he served as Associate Editor or co-Editor of 9 international journals and General or Technical Chair of 4 international conferences. He participated in 70 R&D projects, primarily funded by the European Union and is/was principal investigator/researcher in 42 such projects. Special Issue on Advances in Deep Learning for Real-Time Image and Video Reconstruction and Processing (ADLIR) Journal of Real-Time Image Processing This Special Issue opens to innovative ideas, the latest research and development of deep learning for real-time image and video processing. Papers on the design of new computational tools and methods for real-time image and video reconstruction and processing are welcome. Hence, the target of this special issue is to provide a forum for researchers to focus on computational methods for real-time image reconstruction and processing. To do this, we invite papers (including survey papers) in modeling, algorithm, software optimization, and application of deep learning-based real-time image processing to establish the latest efforts of relevant researchers. IoT is generally characterized by real world and small Things, limited capacity, constrained devices and the consequential issues such as less reliability, security and privacy. CVML live Web lecture series: Web lecture 'Fast Convolution Algorithms for deep learning and computer vision', 14th December 2019, 11:00 EET

Dear Computer vision/machine learning, students, engineers, scientists and enthusiasts, Artificial Intelligence and Information analysis (AIIA) Lab, AUTH is proud to launch the live CVML Web lecture series that will cover very important topics Computer vision/machine learning. Top scientists internationally will deliver these lectures, aiming at providing in-depth knowledge on various CVML topics. The 1-hour lectures will take place on Saturdays, to avoid conflicts with other intended registrant schedules/duties: a) Saturdays 11:00 EET (17:00 Beijing time) and b) Saturdays 20:00 EET (13:00 EST, 10:00 PST for NY/LA, respectively) for audience in the Americas. Each lecture will be announced at least 1 week in advance in various relevant email lists and in the www page: http://icarus.csd.auth.gr/cvml-web-lecture-series/ Lectures will consist primarily of live lecture streaming and PPT slides. Attendees (registrants) need no special computer equipment for attending the lecture. They will receive the lecture PDF before each lecture and will have the ability to ask questions real-time. Audience should have basic University-level undergraduate knowledge of any science or engineering department (calculus, probabilities, programming, that are typical e.g., in any ECE, CS, EE undergraduate program). More advanced knowledge (signals and systems, optimization theory, machine learning) is very helpful but nor required. The first web lecture on 'Fast Convolution Algorithms for deep learning and computer vision' by Professor Ioannis Pitas (see attached abstract and CV), will take place on 14th December 2019, 13:00 EET only. Registration can be done using the link: http://icarus.csd.auth.gr/cvml-web-lecture-series/ Fast convolution algorithms for computer vision and machine learning 2D convolutions play an extremely important role in machine learning, as they form the first layers of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). They are also very important for computer vision (template matching through correlation, correlation trackers) and in image processing (image filtering/denoising/restoration). 3D convolutions are very important for machine learning (video analysis through CNNs) and for video filtering/denoising/restoration. 1D convolutions are extensively used in digital signal processing (filtering/denoising) and analysis (also through CNNs) Therefore, 1D/2D/3D convolution algorithms are very important both for machine learning and for signal/image/video processing and analysis. As their computational complexity is of the order O(N^2), O(N^4) and O(N^6) respectively their fast execution is a must. This lecture will overview linear and cyclic convolution. Then it will present their fast execution through FFTs, resulting in algorithms having computational complexity of the order O(Nlog2N), O(N^2log2N) for 1D and 2D convolutions respectively. Finally, optimal Winograd 1D and 2D convolution algorithms will be presented having theoretically minimal number of computations. Emphasis will be on 1D convolution algorithms, as there will be another lecture on 2D convolution algorithms soon. Prof. I. Pitas was lucky to have done his PhD degree on fast convolution algorithms more than 30 years ago. Now this topic re-emerged as key technology for deep learning and computer vision, primarily to address fast CNN training and inference, thanks to advances primarily in GPU programming, but also in multicore CPU programming. Prof. Ioannis Pitas (IEEE fellow, IEEE Distinguished Lecturer, EURASIP fellow) received the Diploma and PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, both from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. Since 1994, he has been a Professor at the Department of Informatics of the same University. He served as a Visiting Professor at several Universities. His current interests are in the areas of image/video processing, machine learning, computer vision, intelligent digital media, human centered interfaces, affective computing, 3D imaging and biomedical imaging. He has published over 1138 papers, contributed in 50 books in his areas of interest and edited or (co-)authored another 11 books. He has also been member of the program committee of many scientific conferences and workshops. In the past he served as Associate Editor or co-Editor of 9 international journals and General or Technical Chair of 4 international conferences. He participated in 70 R&D projects, primarily funded by the European Union and is/was principal investigator/researcher in 42 such projects. This year, special focus will be on the challenging issues related to all the opportunities of computing, sensing and communication in the era of the integration of Internet of Things, Cloud Computing, and Big Data. The Workshops Committee of SMARTCOMP 2020 invites proposals for half or full day workshops affiliated with the conference, on topics of interest to SMARTCOMP 2020 attendees. The purpose of these workshops is to create new opportunities for presenting novel ideas in a less formal and possibly more sharply focused way than at the conference itself. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, Internet of Things, Software-Defined Networking, Big Data, Cloud Computing, M2M communications and Smart Grid.
