The first International Workshop on Parallel Data Mining (WPDM 2017) CALL FOR PAPERS As part of The International Conference on High Performance Computing & Simulation (HPCS 2017) http://hpcs2017.cisedu.info or http://cisedu.us/rp/hpcs17 July 17 – July 21, 2017 Genoa, Italy Submission Deadline: March 20, 2017 Submissions could be for full papers, short papers, poster papers, or posters SCOPE AND OBJECTIVES The Workshop on Parallel Data Mining is an international forum which brings together researchers and practitioners working on different high-performance aspects of data mining algorithms, enabling novel applications. Data mining techniques and algorithms to process huge amount of data in order to extract useful and interesting information have become popular in many different contexts. Algorithms are required to make sense of data automatically and in efficient ways. Nonetheless, even though sequential computer systems performance is improving, they are not suitable to keep up with the increase in the demand for data mining applications and the data size. Moreover, the main memory of sequential systems may not be enough to hold all the data related to current applications. Therefore, there is an increasing interest in the design and implementation of parallel data mining algorithms. On parallel computers, by exploiting the vast aggregate main memory and processing power of processors and accelerators, parallel algorithms can easily address both the running time and memory requirement issues. Anyway, parallelising existing algorithms in order to achieve good performance and scalability with regard to massive datasets is not trivial. Indeed, it is of paramount importance a good data organisation and decomposition strategy in order to balance the workload while minimising data dependences. Another concern is related to minimising synchronisation and communication overhead. Finally, I/O costs should be minimised as well. The Workshop will allow exchanging ideas and results related to on-going research, focusing on high-performance aspects of data mining algorithms and applications. Creating breakthrough parallel algorithms for high-performance data mining applications requires addressing several key computing problems which may lead to novel solutions and new insights in interdisciplinary applications. The focus of the workshop is on all forms of advances in high-performance data mining algorithms and applications, and related topics. The WPDM Workshop topics include (but are not limited to) the following: - Scalable message-passing parallel data mining algorithms using MPI - Scalable shared-memory parallel data mining algorithms using OpenMP - Scalable hybrid MPI + OpenMP parallel data mining algorithms - Parallel data mining algorithms targeting GPUs and many-cores accelerators - Exploiting modern parallel architectures including FPGA for parallel data mining applications - Map-reduce based parallel data mining algorithms - Middleware for high-performance data mining on grid and cloud environments - Benchmarking and performance studies of high-performance data mining applications - Novel programming paradigms to support high-performance computing for data mining - Performance models for high-performance data mining applications and middleware - Programming models, tools, and environments for high-performance computing in data mining - Caching, streaming, pipelining, and other optimisation techniques for data management in high-performance computing for data mining INSTRUCTIONS FOR PAPER SUBMISSIONS You are invited to submit original and unpublished research works on above and other topics related to synergy between parallel computing, optimisation and simulation. Submitted papers must not have been published or simultaneously submitted elsewhere. For Regular papers, please submit a PDF copy of your full manuscript, not to exceed 8 double-column formatted pages per template, and include up to 6 keywords and an abstract of no more than 400 words. Additional pages will be charged additional fee. Submission should include a cover page with authors' names, affiliation addresses, fax numbers, phone numbers, and all authors email addresses. Please, indicate clearly the corresponding author(s) although all authors are equally responsible for the manuscript. Please specify the type of submission you have. Please include page numbers on all preliminary submissions to make it easier for reviewers to provide helpful comments. At least one of the authors of each accepted paper will have to register and attend the HPCS 2017 conference to present the paper at the workshop. Their objective is to complement the regular program with specific or emerging topics that are of particular interest to the Web Intelligence community and, in case of Workshops, to provide a forum for intense and deep-going discussions. Special Session and Workshop proposals need to address topics that do not pertain to well-established tracks of WI. They may, however, cut across and beyond disciplines traditionally represented at WI conferences. Special Sessions ---------------- Typically, each Special Session comprises at least 3 regular presentations, or 5 short ones, or an adequate mixture of these. The first paper in a Special Session may serve as an introduction to the field, aimed at listeners, who are not experts in the field yet and, therefore, could also be an overview paper. An organizer should not contribute with more than one paper. Workshops --------- The purpose of the CP workshops is to provide a more informal venue in which participants can: * explore specific research areas in depth, * discuss new research directions, * study specific application areas of Web Intelligence, or * bring together researchers from different areas with shared interests. How is a proposal meant to look like? ------------------------------------- Prospective organizers of Special Sessions or Workshops (called events in the following) should submit proposals indicating: 1. Title and acronym of the event 2. Duration (in half-day steps) -for Workshops only 3. Description of the event topic, and a draft version of CFP (not exceeding 500 words) 4. Contact information of the organizers (including name, affiliation, mailing address, and e-mail address) Evaluation of Proposals: ------------------------ Special session and Workshop proposals will be evaluated based on the timeliness of the topic, its uniqueness, the qualifications of the proposers and their experience. The proposers are expected to have at least a PhD degree and a good publication track record in the proposed area. A tentative accept/reject decision on the proposal will be sent to the proposers within a short period after its receipt by the Special Sessions and Workshop Chairs. Accepted special sessions and Workshops will be listed on the website. However, it may be that we suggest that an accepted proposal shall be combined with a similar proposal to avoid multiple Special Sessions or Workshops on a similar topic. A final decision will be made two weeks after the special session proposal deadline. The rise of *Next Generation Sequencing* (NGS) technologies, also known as *high-throughput sequencing* technologies, has contributed actively to the deluge of these data. In general, these data are big, heterogeneous, complex, and distributed in all over the world in databases. Analyzing this huge volume of data is a challenging task, not only, because of its complexity and its multiple and numerous correlated factors, but also, because of the continuous evolution of our understanding of the biological mechanisms. Classical approaches of biological data analysis are no longer efficient and produce only a very limited amount of information, compared to the numerous and complex biological mechanisms under study. From here comes the necessity to use computer tools and develop new *in silico* high performance approaches to support us in the analysis of biological data and, hence, to help us in our understanding of the correlations that exist between, on one hand, structures and functional patterns in biological macromolecules and, on the other hand, genetic and biochemical mechanisms. *Biological **Knowledge Discovery from Data* (BIOKDD) is a response to these new trends. ** Call for Participation *** 22nd ACM International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces IUI 2017 St. Raphael Resort, Limassol, Cyprus March 13-16, 2017 http://www.cs.ucy.ac.cy/~george/lm/lm.php?tk=Y29tcHV0YXRpb25hbC5zY2llbmNlCQ… ACM IUI 2017 is the 22nd annual meeting of the intelligent interfaces community and serves as a premier international forum for reporting outstanding research and development on intelligent user interfaces. ACM IUI is where the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) community meets the Artificial Intelligence (AI), with contributions from related fields such as psychology, behavioral science, cognitive science, computer graphics, design or the arts. Our focus is to improve the interaction between humans and machines, by leveraging both more traditional HCI approaches, as well as solutions that involve state-of-the art AI techniques such as machine learning, natural language processing, data mining, knowledge representation and reasoning. ACM IUI welcomes contribution from any relevant arena: academia, business, or non-profit organizations. The conference brings together people from academia, industry and non-profit organizations and gives its participants the opportunity to present and see cutting-edge IUI work in a focused and interactive setting. It is large enough to be diverse and lively, but small enough to allow for extensive interaction among attendees and easy attendance to the events that the conference offers, ranging from oral paper presentations, poster sessions, workshops, panels and doctoral consortium for graduate students. The 22nd edition of the conference will be held in Limassol, Cyprus. Limassol (or Lemesos) is a multicultural bustling town, flanked by two ancient cities, Amathus and Kourion, and guarded by the Amathusian Aphrodite and Appolo Hylates. It is a town of great visual diversity and contrast from spectacular seafront views, historic places like the mediaeval Castle, and Byzantine churches. Along the 17 km long sandy beaches, two Marinas, world renowned 5 star hotels, and a most exciting dining, shopping, nightlife and yachting scene create a year-round vibrant lifestyle well beyond the expectations of a Mediterranean island. CALL FOR PAPERS - GraMSec 2017 The Fourth International Workshop on Graphical Models for Security Santa Barbara, CA, USA - August 21, 2017 http://gramsec.uni.lu Co-located with CSF 2017 SCOPE Graphical security models provide an intuitive but systematic approach to analyze security weaknesses of systems and to evaluate potential protection measures. Cyber security researchers, as well as security professionals from industry and government, have proposed various graphical security modeling schemes. Such models are used to capture different security facets (digital, physical, and social) and address a range of challenges including vulnerability assessment, risk analysis, defense analysis, automated defensing, secure services composition, policy validation and verification. The objective of the GraMSec workshop is to contribute to the development of well-founded graphical security models, efficient algorithms for their analysis, as well as methodologies for their practical usage. TOPICS The workshop seeks submissions from academia, industry, and government presenting novel research on all theoretical and practical aspects of graphical models for security. PAPER SUBMISSION We solicit two types of submissions: • Regular papers (up to 15 pages, excluding the bibliography and well-marked appendices) describing original and unpublished work within the scope of the workshop. • Short papers (up to 7 pages, excluding the bibliography and well-marked appendices) describing original and unpublished work in progress. The reviewers are not required to read the appendices, so the papers should be intelligible without them. Thanks to the fast development of the cloud computing and virtualization techniques, more and more communication and service related functions may be realized and implemented in cloud, as exemplified by the recent progress in cloud radio access networks (C-RAN), mobile cloud computing (MCC) and network function virtualization (NFV), etc. With the transition from conventional hardware based environment to a software based infrastructure, computing resource can be allocated more dynamically, conveniently and flexibly to the communications and other services. However, allocating more computation resource than networking or user expecting will contribute to a waste of the energy, whereas lack of computing resource in communications will result in packet loss or failure of information transmission. CALL FOR PAPERS - GraMSec 2017 The Fourth International Workshop on Graphical Models for Security Santa Barbara, CA, USA - August 21, 2017 http://gramsec.uni.lu Co-located with CSF 2017 SCOPE Graphical security models provide an intuitive but systematic approach to analyze security weaknesses of systems and to evaluate potential protection measures. Cyber security researchers, as well as security professionals from industry and government, have proposed various graphical security modeling schemes. Such models are used to capture different security facets (digital, physical, and social) and address a range of challenges including vulnerability assessment, risk analysis, defense analysis, automated defensing, secure services composition, policy validation and verification. The objective of the GraMSec workshop is to contribute to the development of well-founded graphical security models, efficient algorithms for their analysis, as well as methodologies for their practical usage. TOPICS The workshop seeks submissions from academia, industry, and government presenting novel research on all theoretical and practical aspects of graphical models for security. New applications, such as virtual reality and smart building control, have emerged due to the large number of resources and services brought by cloud computing. However, the delay-sensitive applications face the problem of large latency, especially when several smart devices and objects are getting involved in human’s life such as the case of smart cities or Internet of Things. Therefore, cloud computing is unable to meet the requirements of low latency, location awareness, and mobility support. To solve this problem, researchers have introduced a trusted and dependable solution through the Fog and the Mobile Edge Computing (FMEC) to put the services and resources of the cloud closer to users, which facilitates the leveraging of available services and resources in the edge networks. By this, we are moving from the core (cloud data centers) to the edge of the network closer to the users. FMEC dependability is based on providing user centric service. The purpose of Fog and the Mobile Edge Computing is to run the heavy real-time applications at the network edge directly using the billions of connected mobile devices. Several features enable the Fog and the Mobile Edge Computing to be a perfect paradigm to the aforementioned purpose, which are the dense geographical deployment of servers, supporting mobility and the closeness to users. As in every new technology, some challenges face the vision of the Fog and the Mobile Edge Computing, which are the administrative policies and security concerns (i.e. secure data storage, secure computation, network security, data privacy, usage privacy, location privacy, etc). FMEC 2017 conference aims to investigate the opportunities and requirements for Mobile Edge Computing dominance. In addition, it seeks for novel contributions that help mitigating Mobile Edge Computing challenges. Data mining techniques and algorithms to process huge amount of data in order to extract useful and interesting information have become popular in many different contexts. Algorithms are required to make sense of data automatically and in efficient ways. Nonetheless, even though sequential computer systems performance is improving, they are not suitable to keep up with the increase in the demand for data mining applications and the data size. Moreover, the main memory of sequential systems may not be enough to hold all the data related to current applications. Therefore, there is an increasing interest in the design and implementation of parallel data mining algorithms. On parallel computers, by exploiting the vast aggregate main memory and processing power of processors and accelerators, parallel algorithms can easily address both the running time and memory requirement issues. Anyway, parallelising existing algorithms in order to achieve good performance and scalability with regard to massive datasets is not trivial. Indeed, it is of paramount importance a good data organisation and decomposition strategy in order to balance the workload while minimising data dependences. Another concern is related to minimising synchronisation and communication overhead. Finally, I/O costs should be minimised as well. The Workshop will allow exchanging ideas and results related to on-going research, focusing on high-performance aspects of data mining algorithms and applications. Creating breakthrough parallel algorithms for high-performance data mining applications requires addressing several key computing problems which may lead to novel solutions and new insights in interdisciplinary applications. The focus of the workshop is on all forms of advances in high-performance data mining algorithms and applications, and related topics. Committee members are not required to read the appendices, and so the paper should be intelligible without them. Submissions are to be made to the submission web site at https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=dbsec2017. All submissions must be written in English, and only PDF files will be accepted (a Latex source file will be required for the final a version of the accepted papers). The final version of the accepted Papers must be in the format required for publications in the LNCS series. Submissions not meeting these guidelines risk rejection without consideration of their merits. Papers must be received by the deadline of March 6, 2017 (11:59 PM American Samoa Time). The rise of *Next Generation Sequencing* (NGS) technologies, also known as *high-throughput sequencing* technologies, has contributed actively to the deluge of these data. In general, these data are big, heterogeneous, complex, and distributed in all over the world in databases. Analyzing this huge volume of data is a challenging task, not only, because of its complexity and its multiple and numerous correlated factors, but also, because of the continuous evolution of our understanding of the biological mechanisms. Classical approaches of biological data analysis are no longer efficient and produce only a very limited amount of information, compared to the numerous and complex biological mechanisms under study. From here comes the necessity to use computer tools and develop new *in silico* high performance approaches to support us in the analysis of biological data and, hence, to help us in our understanding of the correlations that exist between, on one hand, structures and functional patterns in biological macromolecules and, on the other hand, genetic and biochemical mechanisms. *Biological **Knowledge Discovery from Data* (BIOKDD) is a response to these new trends. SMAP 2017 has the support of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society technical co-sponsorship. *Special session on Personalized delivery of cultural heritage content ----------------------------------- Digital cultural heritage is now a mature field, in which information technologies are used in the service of preserving cultural heritage. The digital form of resources allows for the exploitation of advances in data analytics, semantics, information retrieval, user interaction, profiling and personalization in order to develop new, exciting and stimulating exhibitions and cultural/educational/touristic experiences. For this special session we invite works that present and/or review the current state of the art in theory and practice, as well as promising recent advances, in the area of aligning the delivery process for cultural heritage content to the needs, goals, characteristics and preferences of individual users and user groups. The session is broad in scope, with the caveat that emphasis should be on the link between cultural heritage and personalization techniques. *Special Session on Multimodal affective analysis for human-machine interfaces and learning environments ----------------------------------- Affective analysis is a broad research area that focuses on the recognition, interpretation, processing and simulation of human affect, i.e., feelings or emotions. During the last years many efforts in the fields of content understanding and human-machine interaction have turned towards a more human-centered approach and complement traditional semantic-based ones by enhancing them with the users’ affective state while interacting with machines (typically computers, avatars and robots). This special session calls for research papers focusing on signal analysis and machine learning techniques that extract affective knowledge from auditory, visual and textual information usually employed in human-machine interaction and learning applications. Papers that focus on new signal representation, feature extraction and emotion modelling approaches are welcomed, as well as papers covering practical work, tools and applications. *Proceedings/Publications ----------------------------------- As with all previous editions of SMAP, all accepted papers are planned to be published by IEEE in IEEEXplore. The symposium proceedings will be published by Springer in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science series (LNCS). All submissions should follow the LNCS template from the time they are submitted. Submitted papers should be at most 16 pages (using 10-point font), excluding the bibliography and well-marked appendices, and at most 20 pages total. Committee members are not required to read the appendices, so the paper should be intelligible without them. All submissions must be written in English. Submissions are to be made to the Submission web site. Only pdf files will be accepted. Submissions not meeting these guidelines risk rejection without consideration of their merits. The conference also invites a small number of high quality tutorials and nationally recognized keynote speakers. The conference has grown out of two related meetings: SBP and BRiMS, which were co-located in previous years. Social computing harnesses the power of computational methods to study social behavior, such as during team collaboration. Cultural behavioral modeling refers to representing behavior and culture in the abstract, and is a convenient and powerful way to conduct virtual experiments and scenario analysis. Both social computing and cultural behavioral modeling are techniques designed to achieve a better understanding of complex behaviors, patterns, and associated outcomes of interest. Moreover, these approaches are inherently interdisciplinary; subsystems and system components exist at multiple levels of analysis (i.e., “cells to societies”) and across multiple disciplines, from engineering and the computational sciences to the social and health sciences. Paper Formatting Guideline The papers must be in English and MUST be formatted according to the Springer-Verlag LNCS/LNAI guidelines. All regular paper submissions should be submitted as a paper with a maximum of 10 pages using the foregoing format. All accepted entries will be posted on the SBP-BRiMS 2017 website. A selection of authors will be invited to contribute journal versions of their papers to one of two planned special issues of the Springer journal “Computational and Mathematical Organization Theory” and another high- profile journal. PRE-CONFERENCE TUTORIAL SESSIONS: Several half-day sessions will be offered on the day before the full conference. Sessions will be designed to meet the needs of one of two distinct groups. One group will consist of attendees who have backgrounds in computational science; computer science, engineering, and other mathematically oriented disciplines. Other tutorial sessions will be designed for behavioral and social scientists and others (e.g. those with medical backgrounds or training in public health) who may have limited formal education in the computational sciences. Attendees will gain an understanding of terminology, theories, and general approaches employed by computationally based fields, especially with respect to modeling approaches. Tutorial proposal submission: Tutorial proposals should be submitted online to sbpbrims(a)andrew.cmu.edu. FUNDING PANEL & CROSS-FERTILIZATION ROUNDTABLES: Previous SBP-BRiMS conferences have included a Cross-fertilization Roundtable session or a Funding Panel. The purpose of the cross- fertilization roundtables is to help participants become better acquainted with people outside of their discipline and with whom they might consider partnering on future SBP-BRiMS-related research collaborations. The Funding Panel provides an opportunity for conference participants to interact with program managers from various federal funding agencies. Participants for the previous funding panels have included representatives from federal agencies, such as the NSF, NIH, DoD, ONR, AFOSR, USDA, etc. BEST PAPER AWARDS: SBP-BRiMS17 will feature a Best Paper Award and a Best Student Paper Award.
