The symposium proceedings will be published by Springer in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science series (LNCS). All submissions should follow the LNCS template from the time they are submitted. Submitted papers should be at most 16 pages (using 10-point font), excluding the bibliography and well-marked appendices, and at most 20 pages total. Committee members are not required to read the appendices, so the paper should be intelligible without them. All submissions must be written in English. Submissions are to be made to the submission web site. Only pdf files will be accepted. Submissions not meeting these guidelines risk rejection without consideration of their merits. ========================================================================== CALL FOR PAPERS Special Session on High Performance Computing for Application Benchmarking and Optimization (HPBench 2018) As part of the International Conference on High Performance Computing & Simulation (HPCS 2018) http://hpcs2018.cisedu.info/ or http://cisedu.us/rp/hpcs18 ========================================================================== Benchmarking is an essential aspect of modern computational science, and as such, it provides a means for quantifying and comparing the performance of different computer systems. With a large number of combinations of aspects to benchmark, all the way from the capability of a single core to cluster configuration to various software configurations, the benchmarking process is more of an art than science. However, the results of this process drive the modern science and are vital for the community to draw sensible conclusions on the performance of applications and systems. This special session focuses on research work aimed at benchmarking modern parallel and distributed systems for addressing a number of real world problems. Data mining techniques and algorithms to process huge amount of data in order to extract useful and interesting information have become popular in many different contexts. Algorithms are required to make sense of data automatically and in efficient ways. Nonetheless, even though sequential computer systems performance is improving, they are not suitable to keep up with the increase in the demand for data mining applications and the data size. Moreover, the main memory of sequential systems may not be enough to hold all the data related to current applications. Therefore, there is an increasing interest in the design and implementation of parallel data mining algorithms. On parallel computers, by exploiting the vast aggregate main memory and processing power of processors and accelerators, parallel algorithms can easily address both the running time and memory requirement issues. Anyway, parallelizing existing algorithms in order to achieve good performance and scalability with regard to massive datasets is not trivial. Indeed, it is of paramount importance a good data organization and decomposition strategy in order to balance the workload while minimizing data dependences. Another concern is related to minimizing synchronization and communication overhead. Finally, I/O costs should be minimized as well. The Workshop will allow exchanging ideas and results related to on-going research, focusing on high-performance aspects of data mining algorithms and applications. Creating breakthrough parallel algorithms for high-performance data mining applications requires addressing several key computing problems which may lead to novel solutions and new insights in interdisciplinary applications. The focus of the workshop is on all forms of advances in high-performance data mining algorithms and applications, and related topics. The studies on this field is mainly considered under two categories, namely Selection and Generation Hyper-heuristics. Selection Hyper-heuristics operate by automatically choosing (low-level) heuristics from an existing heuristic set while the latter type focuses on generating heuristics from scratch based on predefined components. This stream is expecting studies focusing on either of these hyper-heuristic types -offering different learning approaches, utilizing distinct (meta-) heuristic techniques while dealing with various problems. These solutions aim to find new ways to obtain a better integration of the information technology in everyday life devices and activities. AmI environments are integrated by several autonomous computational devices of modern life ranging from consumer electronics to mobile phones. Ideally, people in an AmI environment will not notice these devices, but they will benefit from the services these solutions provide them. Such devices are aware of the people present in those environments by reacting to their gestures, actions and context. Data mining techniques and algorithms to process huge amount of data in order to extract useful and interesting information have become popular in many different contexts. Algorithms are required to make sense of data automatically and in efficient ways. Nonetheless, even though sequential computer systems performance is improving, they are not suitable to keep up with the increase in the demand for data mining applications and the data size. Moreover, the main memory of sequential systems may not be enough to hold all the data related to current applications. Therefore, there is an increasing interest in the design and implementation of parallel data mining algorithms. On parallel computers, by exploiting the vast aggregate main memory and processing power of processors and accelerators, parallel algorithms can easily address both the running time and memory requirement issues. Anyway, parallelizing existing algorithms in order to achieve good performance and scalability with regard to massive datasets is not trivial. The project in which the applicant will be integrated aims to solve challenging problems on global optimization in computational biology and bioinformatics through the proposal of new parallel metaheuristics and their implementation for cloud environments. OFFER The candidate will be provided with a one-year contract, extendable (based on the progress of the candidate) up to 3 years offering the chance to obtain a PhD qualification. This contract includes full social security coverage and a net salary competitive for living standards in a city as A Coruña (on the range 22000€-25000€). The successful candidate will work in the areas of nonlinear optimisation, especially meta-heuristic optimisation (evolutionary optimisation), and machine learning. In particular, the PhD project will study novel learning algorithms for enhancing meta-heuristic optimisation algorithms. The key research issues include the conservation, abstraction and modelling of experience gained from optimising one problem instance and the smart integration of such experience/knowledge in solving related problem instances. The main research challenges include: the representation of experience; the mapping/transfer of the problem-solving experience across problem instances; the incorporation of transferred experience into solving the current problem instance at hand. We are looking for candidates who have an excellent MSc or BSc/BEng degree in computer science or a closely related area. We offer the successful candidate the opportunity to work both within the academic environment (University of Birmingham) and in an industrial setting (Honda Research Institute Europe), providing an excellent training for future careers in either academia or industry. Data mining techniques and algorithms to process huge amount of data in order to extract useful and interesting information have become popular in many different contexts. Algorithms are required to make sense of data automatically and in efficient ways. Nonetheless, even though sequential computer systems performance is improving, they are not suitable to keep up with the increase in the demand for data mining applications and the data size. Moreover, the main memory of sequential systems may not be enough to hold all the data related to current applications. Therefore, there is an increasing interest in the design and implementation of parallel data mining algorithms. On parallel computers, by exploiting the vast aggregate main memory and processing power of processors and accelerators, parallel algorithms can easily address both the running time and memory requirement issues. Anyway, parallelizing existing algorithms in order to achieve good performance and scalability with regard to massive datasets is not trivial. Indeed, it is of paramount importance a good data organization and decomposition strategy in order to balance the workload while minimizing data dependences. Another concern is related to minimizing synchronization and communication overhead. Finally, I/O costs should be minimized as well. The Workshop will allow exchanging ideas and results related to on-going research, focusing on high-performance aspects of data mining algorithms and applications. Creating breakthrough parallel algorithms for high-performance data mining applications requires addressing several key computing problems which may lead to novel solutions and new insights in interdisciplinary applications. The focus of the workshop is on all forms of advances in high-performance data mining algorithms and applications, and related topics. Middleware technologies include tools to assemble together different resources such as parallel supercomputers, data archives, high-speed storage systems, advanced visualization devices and scientific instruments using high speed networks connecting geographically distributed devices and organizations. Papers will be peer-reviewed by at least three reviewers. Papers are evaluated with respect to originality, significance, clarity, and technical soundness. One author of each accepted paper will be expected to present the paper at the workshop. Authors are invited to submit papers electronically in PDF format. CRYPTACUS 2018 Call for participation Training School on Cryptanalysis of Ubiquitous Computing Systems Azores, Portugal Monday April 16 - Friday April 20, 2018 Organized by the CRYPTACUS COST Action (IC1403) https://www.cryptacus.eu/en/events/training-school-2018/ *Grants still available* Recent technological advances in hardware and software have irrevocably affected the classical picture of computing systems. Today, these no longer consist only of connected servers, but involve a wide range of pervasive and embedded devices, leading to the concept of "ubiquitous computing systems". To improve the security of these systems the existent cryptanalysis methodologies and tools need to be improved and adapted. This training school will focus on the assessment of theoretical and practical cryptographic mechanisms designed to ensure security and privacy, within four main axes: • cryptographic models; • cryptanalysis of building blocks; • hardware and software security engineering; • and security assessment of real-world systems. The training School will take place in the São Miguel island, Azores, Portugal. This training school aims at providing theoretical and practical lectures on topics related to security and cryptanalysis of ubiquitous computing systems.
