Data mining techniques and algorithms to process huge amount of data in order to extract useful and interesting information have become popular in many different contexts. Algorithms are required to make sense of data automatically and in efficient ways. Nonetheless, even though sequential computer systems performance is improving, they are not suitable to keep up with the increase in the demand for data mining applications and the data size. Moreover, the main memory of sequential systems may not be enough to hold all the data related to current applications. Therefore, there is an increasing interest in the design and implementation of parallel data mining algorithms. On parallel computers, by exploiting the vast aggregate main memory and processing power of processors and accelerators, parallel algorithms can easily address both the running time and memory requirement issues. Anyway, parallelizing existing algorithms in order to achieve good performance and scalability with regard to massive datasets is not trivial. Indeed, it is of paramount importance a good data organization and decomposition strategy in order to balance the workload while minimizing data dependences. Another concern is related to minimizing synchronization and communication overhead. Finally, I/O costs should be minimized as well. The Workshop will allow exchanging ideas and results related to on-going research, focusing on high-performance aspects of data mining algorithms and applications. Creating breakthrough parallel algorithms for high-performance data mining applications requires addressing several key computing problems which may lead to novel solutions and new insights in interdisciplinary applications. The focus of the workshop is on all forms of advances in high-performance data mining algorithms and applications, and related topics. Special Issue on Finite Difference Methods: Recent Developments and Applications in Computational Science Computational Science is a rapidly growing interdisciplinary field concerned with constructing mathematical models, numerical approximations of forward and inverse problems, quantitative analysis techniques, and using advanced computing capabilities to analyze, investigate and solve a wide range of complex problems in the natural and social sciences, medicine, and engineering, among others. Finite difference approximations of differential equations are one of the oldest and simplest methods which are frequently used for computing approximate solutions of the underlying equations modeling complex phenomenon. With the availability of ever more powerful computational resources, the large but finite algebraic system of equations arising from finite difference approximations can be easily solved on present day computers, and the resulting efficient algorithms provide gold standards to beat for other approximation techniques. Modeling and simulation tools based on Finite Difference techniques find increasing applications not only in fundamental research, but also in several real-world applications. However, the simplicity and efficiency of Finite Difference Methods comes at the cost of reduced accuracy and stability in the approximation of problems involving heterogenieties and nonsmooth interfaces. The objective of this special issue is to present recent important developments in the construction, analysis and simulation of approximation techniques based on the Finite Difference Method (FDM) that address these and other limitations of the FDMs and provide efficient solutions to advance research in this area. CompAstro Workshop within ICCSA 2019

Dear Colleague, This is an invitation to submit a contribution for the Computational Astrochemistry (CompAstro) Workshop of the 19th International Conference on Computational Science and its Applications (ICCSA 2019, www.iccsa.org<http://www.iccsa.org/> ) to be held on July 1 - 4, 2019 in Saint Petersburg (Russia). The format of the CompAstro Workshop is peculiar, as it does not feature a list of pre-selected invited speakers. Rather, the oral contributions will be selected only from the submitted papers. Please note that the submission of a short paper (and not of the mere abstract) is required by the deadline indicated in the ICCSA webpage (the deadline for submission might vary with respect to that originally indicated, presumably it will extend up to the end of March). All accepted papers will be included in the Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS, http://www.springer.com/gp/computer-science/lncs) series and indexed by Scopus, EI Engineering Index, Thomson Reuters Conference Proceedings Citation Index (included in ISI Web of Science), and several other indexing services. DESCRIPTION OF THE WORKSHOP Since their first detection, the presence of relatively complex molecules in the interstellar medium, ISM, has posed the question of how they are formed. The harsh chemical environments of interstellar clouds (namely, very low temperature and very low number density), indeed, challenge the common notions that chemical synthesis requires energy to promote the weakening of the reactant bonds and frequent collisions to increase the number of reactive encounters. Since 1% of interstellar clouds is composed by small silicates or vitreous carbonaceous particles, interstellar grains covered by icy mantles are also invoked to play an important role in synthesizing interstellar molecules by acting as interstellar catalysts. One important drawback of astrochemical models, which include several thousands of molecular processes, is due to the uncertainty associated with the parameters which are used to quantitatively account for the importance of every step: many of those processes have never been investigated in laboratory experiments, many others have been investigated but under experimental conditions that do not reproduce the interstellar ones (either regarding the temperature or the pressure). For gas-phase reactions of the first kind, rate coefficients and their temperature dependence are mainly estimated with some chemical intuition or by drawing analogies with similar known processes. Small details in the molecular structure and in the potential energy surfaces, however, can induce a huge change in the chemical behavior and reasoning by analogy can cause severe mistakes. In the second case, the values obtained as a function of the temperature in a T range that does not encompass those of relevance in ISM are used, but this can also be very risky as a change in the reaction mechanism can alter the temperature dependence in non-Arrhenius reactions. The case of grain-chemistry simulation in laboratory experiments is even more complex, as no experiments are able to reproduce the size of interstellar particles, the exact composition of the grain icy mantle and the flux of particles and/or photons impinging on the grains. A theoretical characterization at the atomic/molecular level can help in extrapolating experimental data at the conditions of ISM or in estimating in a reliable way the kinetic parameters (e.g. cross sections, rate constants, branching ratios) associated with reactions that cannot be investigated in laboratory experiments. These theoretical characterizations, once used to interpret and understand the laboratory data, can assist in the extrapolation to the actual ISM conditions. When laboratory data are not available, instead, they can provide a reliable estimate of the relative parameters. In conclusion, a thorough theoretical characterization can be pivotal to the understanding of chemistry in space either in the presence or absence of experimental data. All these topics are covered by computational astrochemistry, which forms the subject of the present workshop. PHD SHOWCASE PAPERS (CPS) Reporting ongoing research already achieving significant results and primarily carried out by Ph.D. students and junior researchers. The submitted paper must be between 6 to 8 pages long formatted according to CPS rules. The PHD Showcase Papers will be presented during the conference and will be published by CPS as post-conference proceedings. Each paper must deal with original and unpublished work, not submitted for publication elsewhere (copyright problems fall entirely under responsibility of the authors). Special Session "Bio-inspired computing approaches" at IWINAC 2019 (8th International Work-Conference on the Interplay between Natural and Artificial Computation), Almeria (Spain), 3-7 June, 2019 http://www.iwinac.uned.es/iwinac2019/ Overview: Bio-inspired computing methods take inspiration from nature to develop optimization and search algorithms or metaheuristics, typically in order to tackle the search of optimal solutions of complex problems in science and engineering, which usually imply a high dimensionality of the search space. Apart from the traditional evolutionary computing methods, artificial immune systems, ant algorithms or particle swarm optimization, the session is intended to focus on new bio-inspired solutions such as swarm algorithm solutions based on bee colonies, algorithms based on firefly insect behavior, artificial algae algorithm and many more, together with their combination with local search strategies or other metaheuristics. The researchers in this field must be self-critical with the boom of such new solutions, contrasting what is new and what is included in other traditional search algorithms or what novelty is provided in a new bio-inspired metaheuristic. Besides, the proposals should be competitive with other methods in the state of the art. The aim is that the session provides a meeting point for IWINAC attendees and researchers who have a current or developing interest in bio-inspired approaches and their applications. Topics of interest include (but are not restricted to): • Bio-inspired approaches based on animal behavior (Cuckoo search, Cat swarm, Artificial Bee Colony, Bat algorithm, Wolf search, …). • Bio-inspired approaches based on plant behavior (artificial algae algorithm, flower pollination algorithm, PIBO, …). • Bio-inspired approaches based on bacteria like BFO. • New approaches in evolutionary computing methods. • Combination of bio-inspired approaches with local search: Lamarckian strategies, Baldwinian strategies, memetic algorithms. • Combination of the bio-inspired approaches with artificial life models like cellular automata or Lindenmayer systems. • Applications with bio-inspired approaches. The Workshop on Parallel and Distributed Data Mining (WPDM 2018) is an international forum that brings together researchers and practitioners, working on different high-performance aspects of data mining algorithms, enabling novel applications. Indeed, datasets grow so rapidly that, every day, exabytes of data are being generated, and, in order to extract and infer useful knowledge, parallel processing techniques are required to cope with this huge volume of data: Traditional sequential software is not viable to cope with them. When the data are generated in different places (such as wireless sensor networks and/or Internet of things devices), they may be geographically spread out, and the data cannot be sent to a centralized site, thus, the need for distributed processing algorithms arises. Data mining techniques and algorithms to process huge amount of data in order to extract useful and interesting information have become popular in many different contexts. Algorithms are required to make sense of data automatically and in efficient ways. Nonetheless, even though sequential computer systems performance is improving, they are not suitable to keep up with the increase in the demand for data mining applications and the data size. Moreover, the main memory of sequential systems may not be enough to hold all the data related to current applications. Therefore, there is an increasing interest in the design and implementation of parallel data mining algorithms. On parallel computers, by exploiting the vast aggregate main memory and processing power of processors and accelerators, parallel algorithms can easily address both the running time and memory requirement issues. Anyway, parallelizing existing algorithms in order to achieve good performance and scalability with regard to massive datasets is not trivial. Indeed, it is of paramount importance a good data organization and decomposition strategy in order to balance the workload while minimizing data dependences. Another concern is related to minimizing synchronization and communication overhead. Finally, I/O costs should be minimized as well. The Workshop will allow exchanging ideas and results related to on-going research, focusing on high-performance aspects of data mining algorithms and applications. Creating breakthrough parallel algorithms for high-performance data mining applications requires addressing several key computing problems which may lead to novel solutions and new insights in interdisciplinary applications. The focus of the workshop is on all forms of advances in high-performance data mining algorithms and applications, and related topics.
