« Modeling Energy Consumption of Heterogeneous Numerical Infrastructures in HPC » Energy consumption is one of the main limiting factor for the design and deployment of large scale numerical infrastructures [4]. The road towards "Sustainable Exascale" is a challenge with a target of 50 Gflops per watt. Energy efficiency must be taken into account and must be combined with other criteria like performance, resilience, quality of service. In particular, power consumption is critical and power peaks should be avoided to ensure the proper power supply of the large-scale infrastructure [2]. As platforms become more and more heterogeneous (co-processors, GPUs, low power processors...), a deep understanding on how application and services can efficiently run on such large scale infrastructures remains a challenge. Simulation of infrastructures (like by using the SimGrid framework [1]) makes a significant step towards this direction. The post-doc will explore the energy consumption issues in large scale high performance heterogeneous computing platforms by measuring the actual energy consumption on real infrastructures (including Grid’5000 test-beds), and proposing end-to-end energy models for large-scale HPC infrastructures. These models will account for data movement and computations. Their integration within the SimGrid framework will allow to test what-if scenarios in order to determine for given HPC applications what would be the most suitable hardware architecture in terms of computation cores and network configuration. Several performance and energy models will be explored depending on targeted computing resources mixing simulated GPUs and low power processors. The post-doc will manage, propose and analyze several experimental scenarios in order to validate proposed solutions and to design energy-efficient HPC applications. The candidate will be located in Inria Myriads team (IRISA, Rennes, Anne-Cécile Orgerie as principal advisor) and co-advised with the Avalon team (LIP, Lyon with Laurent Lefevre co-advisor). == Public video dataset for racing bicycle detection/tracking from aerial footage == The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) is making publicly available a video dataset for racing bicycle detection/tracking from aerial footage, under the auspices of the MULTIDRONE research and development project (https://multidrone.eu/) Benchmark_RAI has been prepared by processing/editing and annotating material made available by Radiotelevisione Italiana (RAI) under the “Giro 2017” MULTIDRONE dataset. It is a dataset consisting of two videos (resolutions: 768 x 432 and 960 x 540) at 25 frames per second. The videos are from Giro d’Italia TV coverage provided by RAI. Annotations are exhaustive, i.e., all objects of a certain class present in a given image are covered by an annotation. Data mining techniques and algorithms to process huge amount of data in order to extract useful and interesting information have become popular in many different contexts. Algorithms are required to make sense of data automatically and in efficient ways. Nonetheless, even though sequential computer systems performance is improving, they are not suitable to keep up with the increase in the demand for data mining applications and the data size. Moreover, the main memory of sequential systems may not be enough to hold all the data related to current applications. Therefore, there is an increasing interest in the design and implementation of parallel data mining algorithms. On parallel computers, by exploiting the vast aggregate main memory and processing power of processors and accelerators, parallel algorithms can easily address both the running time and memory requirement issues. Anyway, parallelizing existing algorithms in order to achieve good performance and scalability with regard to massive datasets is not trivial. Indeed, it is of paramount importance a good data organization and decomposition strategy in order to balance the workload while minimizing data dependences. Another concern is related to minimizing synchronization and communication overhead. Finally, I/O costs should be minimized as well. The Workshop will allow exchanging ideas and results related to on-going research, focusing on high-performance aspects of data mining algorithms and applications. Creating breakthrough parallel algorithms for high-performance data mining applications requires addressing several key computing problems which may lead to novel solutions and new insights in interdisciplinary applications. The focus of the workshop is on all forms of advances in high-performance data mining algorithms and applications, and related topics. Cyber Physical Systems (CPS) constitute a new class of engineered systems, integrating software control and autonomous decision making with signals from an uncertain and dynamic environment. Internet transformed the way people interact and deal with information. CPS technology transformed the way people interact with engineered systems. For this type of systems, it is necessary not only ensuring the safety of physical devices but also other factors such as information about customers, suppliers, and organizational strategies needs to be secured. In the context of cyber systems, the Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies can contribute to manage a huge amount of heterogeneous data that come from different sources without human intervention. To deliver certification, standards for machine safety are highly recommended as they give confidence to the regulatory. The generic standard for safety-related hardware and software might be applicable, however, due to increasing autonomy of robots there is still a potential for evolution of such regulations or standards. The proper combination of AI, CPS and IoT is therefore fundamental. CPS are considered a disruptive technology which will transform the traditional manufacturing into Industry 4.0 solutions, and are used in a very wide spectrum of applications: smart mobility, autonomous driving, digital healthcare, smart grids and buildings, mobile co-operating autonomous robotic systems, digital consumer products and services. "In conclusion, the emerging Digital (R)-evolution relies heavily on Embedded Intelligent Systems technologies in domains where it is paramount that Europe takes leadership role" (Laila Gide, "The pathway to digital transformation: an opportunity for Europe", ARTEMIS Magazine 20 May 2016). This workshop aims to provide a platform to industrial practitioners, researchers and engineers in academia to exchange of their ideas, research results, experiences in the field of dependable and cyber physical systems engineering, both a theoretical and practical perspective.
