Dear drone imaging scientists and engineers,
you are invited to submit an original, unpublished technical paper to the Special Session "Image and video analysis for autonomous drones"
of EUSIPCO 2021: https://eusipco2021.org/. New submission deadline for the EUSIPCO conference is March 1, 2021.
Autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs, or drones) are becoming more and more important to many industries, promising simplified logistics, cost reductions, increased safety for humans, quicker response times and more accurate results, when compared to traditional procedures. Drones are highly useful thanks to their easy deployment, their aerial point-of-view and their ability to access difficult-to-reach spaces. Recent advances in aerial robotics and AI have already pushed drone automation to an unprecedented degree in various application domains, such as infrastructure inspection and maintenance, aerial cinematography, search and rescue operations, etc.
Manipulation, processing, analysis and learning of visual signals lie at the forefront of this revolution. This special session will consider current research in this interdisciplinary subject, aiming to bring together researchers working on image/video analysis and experts in aerial robotics. Topics of interest may include, among others:
- Embedded computer vision
- Deep learning for image/video analysis
- Multimodal perception
- Sensor and data fusion
- Fault and anomaly detection in drone footage
- Subcentimeter-accuracy inspection
- Autonomous drone cinematography
- Vision-based localization and mapping
- Vision-based drone navigation/control
- Vision-based human-drone interaction
This Special Session concerns a very timely topic with high industrial potential, given that fully/semi- automated drones are slowly emerging as a viable alternative to manually teleoperated ones, thanks to recent advances in robotics and AI. A lot of underlying cognitive functionalities that enable such autonomy, particularly the ones facilitating drone perception, rely on advanced image/video analysis methods for achieving their goals, making this a highly interdisciplinary topic of exceptional interest both to imaging scientists and aerial robotics researchers.
The Special Session is organized by Prof. I. Pitas and Dr. I.
Mademlis, from the Artificial Intelligence and Information Analysis Lab (AIIA Lab), Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece (AUTH), under the auspices of the EU-funded Horizon 2020 programme AERIAL-CORE (https://aerial-core.eu/).

LION15: The 15th Learning and Intelligent Optimization Conference
Athens, Greece, June 20-25, 2021

Extended Submission deadline March 15, 2021
The large variety of heuristic algorithms for hard optimization problems raises numerous interesting and challenging issues. Practitioners using heuristic algorithms for hard optimization problems are confronted with the burden of selecting the most appropriate method, in many cases through expensive algorithm configuration and parameter tuning. Scientists seek theoretical insights and demand a sound experimental methodology for evaluating algorithms and assessing strengths and weaknesses. This effort requires a clear separation between the algorithm and the experimenter, who, in too many cases, is "in the loop" as a motivated intelligent learning component. LION deals with designing and engineering ways of "learning" about the performance of different techniques, and ways of using past experience about the algorithm behavior to improve performance in the future. Intelligent learning schemes for mining the knowledge obtained online or offline can improve the algorithm design!
process
and simplify the applications of high-performance optimization methods. Combinations of different algorithms can further improve the robustness and performance of the individual components.
This meeting explores the intersections and uncharted territories between machine learning, artificial intelligence, energy, mathematical programming and algorithms for hard optimization problems. The main purpose of the event is to bring together experts from these areas to discuss new ideas and methods, challenges and opportunities in various application areas, general trends and specific developments. We are excited to be bringing the LION conference in Greece for the third time.

Call for Papers: ICAS 2021 Autonomous Vehicle Vision (AVVision) Special Session (Deadline: March 03, 2021)
ICAS is a flagship event sponsored by IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) through IEEE SPS Autonomous Systems Initiative.
Special Session Website: https://avvision.xyz/icas21/
With a number of breakthroughs in autonomous system technology over the past decade, the race to commercialize self-driving cars has become fiercer than ever. The integration of advanced sensing, computer vision, signal/image processing, and machine/deep learning into autonomous vehicles enables them to perceive the environment intelligently and navigate safely. Autonomous driving is required to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient automated mobility in complex uncontrolled real-world environments. Various applications range from automated transportation and farming to public safety and environment exploration. Visual perception is a critical component of autonomous driving. Enabling technologies include: a) affordable sensors that can acquire useful data under varying environmental conditions, b) reliable simultaneous localization and mapping, c) machine learning that can effectively handle varying real-world conditions and unforeseen events, as well as “machine-learning friendly” signal processing to enable more effective classification and decision making, and d) resilient and robust platforms that can withstand adversarial attacks and failures. The <https://avvision.xyz/> Autonomous Vehicle Vision (AVVision) Special Session at <https://2021.ieee-icas.org/> the IEEE International Conference on Autonomous Systems 2021 (ICAS'21) will cover all these topics. Research papers are solicited in, but not limited to, the following topics:
Organizers
Dr. Rui Ranger Fan, UC San Diego
Prof. Ioannis Pitas, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki
Important Dates
Full Paper Submission: 03/03/2021
Notification of Acceptance: 05/21/2021
Camera-Ready Paper Submission: 06/01/2021
Submission
Prospective authors are invited to submit full-length papers (up to 4 pages for technical content including figures and possible references, and with one additional optional 5th page containing only references) via the IEEE ICAS 2021 conference website. Manuscripts should be original (not submitted/published anywhere else) and written in accordance with the standard double-column SPS IEEE conference format.
IEEE ICAS 2021 requires that each accepted paper be presented by one of the authors in-person at the conference site according to the schedule to be published. Any paper accepted into the technical program, but not presented on-site will be withdrawn from the official proceedings archived on IEEE Xplore.

Dear Organizers,
Congratulations!
We are glad to inform you that your proposal entitled " Autonomous Vehicle Vision (AVVision)" has been approved for inclusion in the IEEE ICAS 2021's Special Session (SS) Programme.
The committee and reviewers were impressed by the proposal. One recommendation was that you could perhaps consider modifying the title of the proposal to narrow the scope and construct a more focused special session. Additionally, you could consider eliminating topics “d) hardware and software codesign” and “f) end-to-end system integration”. These are not mandatory changes, but the overall impression of the committee was that in its current form the scope of the session is very broad.
The "Paper Submission Deadline" for SS papers is March 3, 2021 as such please contact authors of the proposed contributed papers in your SS to proceed with submission of their papers in a timely fashion.
Congratulations again and looking forward to hosting your SS at ICAS'2021.
Warm Regards,
IEEE ICAS 2021's Special Session Chairs.
